DS Najib-Benchmarking his Leadership.

The choice of his cabinet members is the absolute prerogative of the PM. These few days, the PM has been meeting with political leaders. He has met with candidates to be inducted into his cabinet. Hopefuls must have been waiting with nail biting suspense with their hand phones. They are waiting for a call from the PM's office that will determine their political future.

In the last few days especially after the recent UMNO elections, we have read and listened to calls by many quarters as to the cabinet members whom the PM should choose. I have written about some of these 'pontifical' qualities' in an earlier blog.

I find them to be mostly unsuited being motivated by a basic desire to shut out KJ from a cabinet post. Such calls come from voices whose own saintliness is also questionable. These are exceeded only by an intensely united and politically murderous desire to overwhelm KJ and complete a conspiratorial humiliation of Pak Lah. In Malaysia, a dead horse is run over and over again. It happens only in Malaysia.

Even "L'Éminence Grise" of Malaysia, the great TDM has interfered by laying down the qualities of a prospective cabinet member. I can't remember Tun Hussein Onn laying down rules as to who his successor then (Dr Mahathir) must choose. TDM had absolute latitude.

Unfortunately TDM is not so charitable. Especially to those he thinks he created. Indeed he has been reported as saying that if DS Najib appoints KJ, he will not stop attacking the Najib administration and may be tempted to leave UMNO yet again. That, sadly to me is equivalent to holding a gun to Najib's head. The particularly frustrating feeling going through the assaulted head is the uncertainty in knowing whether such gun is loaded or not.

By doing so, TDM presupposes the PM's wisdom in choosing appropriate members of his cabinet to be inadequate. I say sans malice here, that if the PM succumbs to this soft ultimatum from our Malaysian Père Joseph otherwise known as François Leclerc du Tremblay, then DS Najib has, by default, turned himself into a Malaysian Cardinal de Richelieu (who was a Secretary of State- equivalent to the post of PM).

LET ME SAY THIS NOW SO THAT WE CAN FOREVER HOLD OUR PEACE- WHETHER KJ IS APPOINTED AS CABINET MEMBER OR GIVEN PUBLIC OFFICE IS NO LONGER MATERIAL AND RELEVANT TO ME. It's entirely up to DS Najib. What is now relevant to me is the leadership fortitude that DS Najib must display.

Dato Najib must begin with himself by establishing his leadership benchmark. He must be his own person. Part of forging his own leadership identity and dispelling the image of a political invertebrate at the same time, is to gradually free himself from TDM's shadow.

I have said this before that even though DS Najib must factor in TDM in his administration, the factoring in need not necessarily amount to complete capitulation. DS Najib must be his own man and he will not be accused of being disrespectful of TDM should he choose to project an assertive image and personality. After all, those are TDM's own qualities and imitation of those qualities is an unqualified homage to TDM.

TDM must give DS Najib a sporting chance to allow the latter create his own space. That space must not be incessantly and needlessly invaded even by someone who has permanently imprinted his mark over Malaysia as Tun did.

Perhaps TDM thinks his  22 years as PM has allowed him to build an inexhaustible reservoir of political goodwill. Alas, that reservoir appears to be drying up because it can no longer recall sufficient reserves to ensure victory in Perak and Kedah this recent week. DS Najib must not lose sight of the smoke signals here.

i'd give ds najib more credit.

i think he does things based on the merit of it and not be bullied by WHO is saying what he should do.

i remember tdm was at his wits end when ds najib didn't budge when he ask najib to move on pak lah earlier.

i was at my regular mamak place when i first heard of 'roti najib' joke had just took in a full sip of teh tarik when the punch line was delivered. i laugh so hard that i accidently spew the whole load onto the guy sitting right across.

whatever tdm or whoever had to say, i think he will scrutinize the merit of it and he will make his own decision.

Given the proposed new Umno franchise with some 60,000 party members to elect leaders, and Najib's recurring "kalau bagi salah, tak bagi kalah" the way forward is to discuss reforms and pursue reconciliation.

Instead, led by a senior statesman, a slice of the party and their cheer leaders, appear to be bent on harming the career of a very young man.

Spokesmen have been rolled out to demand that "those tainted" should be excluded from Najib's first Cabinet, in a thinly veiled reference to Khairy Jamaluddin.

We have all been able to rationalise the kind of journalism foisted on the nation by Kadir Jasin; but for this senior journalist to be lynching Khairy on behalf of the old master is dreadful. To neatly demarcate politicians as "clean" or otherwise is treacherous.

In retrospect was the decision by Lembaga Disiplin, mere lines in a powerful script designed to damage Khairy?

Tok Sak,
You are right in saying that even TDM has lost his "magic" in the by-elections. THE REASON IS CLEAR & SIMPLE: PAK LAH, SIL & CO. HAVE INFLICTED SUCH A DAMAGE TO UMNO & THIS COUNTRY IN THE 5 YEARS THAT HE'S BEEN SLUMBERING AROUND THAT NOT EVEN TDM, NAY, THE WHOLE GOODWILL OF UMNO COME TO THINK OF IT, WILL EVER BE GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE UP FOR IT! Its very clear in the eyes of the rakyat, though again, as I said, people believe what they want to believe, and obviously SOME people very much want to believe that kj is THE savior of the Malays/Malaysia, come what may... well what can I say? Its all in the mind mate! If kj came up in Najib's cabinet lineup tomorrow, I make a prediction that UMNO/BN will become history in GE13... you can fool people some of the time, but I'm sure you can't fool people all the time... time to make a stand Mr PM!?

SM,

I think NTR can safely choose to take TDM's advice at face value but make up his own mind.

Just as you have pointed out, TDM's appearance - while accompanied with much euphoria, was akin to Cliff Richard/Barry Manilow/AHA coming to Genting to perform.

Nostalgic, yes. Vote winning: nahhh!!

I really detest TDM's decision to join in the fray the way he did.

It sort of cheapens his Statesman value, just like the time Semangat 46 used Tunku Abdul Rahman (Allah bless his soul).

KJ for Minister? We'll see, but putting MM in (as one paper is speculating) can easily be a double edge blade for NTR.

I say nay to both but then i am no fan of either. So my thoughts don't count. :)

TDM has said, being human, he has made mistakes in the past. Let's talk a bit about his mistakes so that DSN can try to avoid them and handle the repercussions.

TDM started awarding contracts and big projects to cronies without competitive bidding, the new rich helping money politics, UMNO contests becoming increasingly expensive, political party involvement in business, increasing abuse of power for corrupt purposes. All these continued under TAB.

Not long before he handed over power, he started the discussion on NEP, talked about feeling ashamed being protected like a Red Indian. It was exploited and TAB used the word crutches. Now the Malays who have not tasted the benefits are feeling unhappy.

Correcting the above must be the benchmark of DSN's leadership. Specifically, ensuring transparency and competition in contract and project awards, getting rid of cronyism and money politics, spreading out the NEP benefits.

Grand Old Man is only relevant in party but NOT among the voting people.

Anonymous,  9 April 2009 at 11:45

"What is wrong with Mahathirism? We had 22 years of development" As quoted by Grand Old Man.

What is wrong with Mahathirism? Nothing, actually. We had 22 years of muilti million projects being awarded, we had tall, big, wide infrastruture... That is good as we have emulated developed nation infrastruture.

However, how have we developed the minds and souls of the people with Mahathirism? Hmmm... debatable... Probably, we scare them into oblivion for talking, with the use of multiple law..
Probably, we support cronyism and closed economy by giving projects to individuals..
Probably, we sack and shame people we dont like..
Probably, enrich our kids economically but at the same time we condemn others for doing so..
Probably, we believe others are so stupid that they cannot be a help to decision making..
Probably, we got so lucky in 1997 that we avoided the imf loans to protect individuals
Probably, have multitude of layers of people in the run up to elections..

So many probabilities..
