Tunku Aziz is a master of gratuitous unsolicited advice.

Tunku Aziz is a much respected man. Urbane, speaks and write impeccable English. He is also a member of a royal family. In addition he is an elderly person. In our culture we respect the older ones. I have been reluctant to write against Tunku Aziz because of these considerations.
However he has been relentless in his attacks on DAP almost to the point that he sounds very personal. Let us try to understand Tunku Aziz.
He speaks entirely in English so that I am not sure of the accuracy of the translation of what he said into Bahasa Melayu. He has advised Dyana Daud to be wary of DAP and not allow Dap to make use of her as they did him.
Tunku Aziz was appointed as vice Chairman of DAP because he has showed some affinity with DAP’s thinking. He was a crusader on transparency and corruption which are also important causes for DAP.
But because of differences and perception that he was mistreated he left. What happened to him is an object lesson for the Malays in DAP no doubt, but his case was a particular one. It’s not capable of general application. Tunku Aziz turned out to have a temperament that exceeded normal accommodation. DAP cannot bend backwards to accommodate Tunku Aziz who seems to think he is bigger than life. In DAP everyone is treated the same. Some are more prominent, some less. The lesser ones make no fuss about it.
If Tunku Aziz thinks that because you are a Malay and the DAP must provide special concessions because of that, then don’t join DAP. The Malays in DAP who have not made it to the top will eventually do if they worked hard and demonstrate some qualities that are appreciated. They cannot be expected to serve as window-dressers. Each must earn his or her place; I think everyone who joins DAP understand that. There are many more Chinese who are satisfied at playing the role of supporters and dedicated party workers.
We don’t want Dyana Daud or for that matter any Malay MP in DAP to turn out to be another Tunku Aziz. I am a Malay MP and a member of the DAP- the DAP does not babysit you. I am very much conscious of that.
I have already explained- there is a practical reason for fielding Dyana Daud. Of course it’s intended to attract Malay support. There is nothing wrong in that. It’s also part of an on-going process to tone down the image of DAP. It has been described a chauvinist, racist, communists and all that. The choice of Dyana Daud is seen as a means to mitigate the extreme descriptions. Now, whether this is regarded as ulterior or otherwise is irrelevant. Tunku Aziz’s unsolicited advice is also irrelevant.
We want to get as much Malay support from the Malays. We don’t want to get the Tunku Aziz Malay type.
UMNO has gone berserk because its monopoly on the Malay mind is threatened. That alone explained the vehemence and intensity of attacks on Dyana Daud. Because Dyana Daud can become an inspiration of other brave Malays to join DAP. Once in they will realise DAP does not aspire to create a Chinese state.
It is unfortunate that Tunku Aziz who shares many similarities in political thinking as the DAP found more reasons to part ways with DAP. We are not going to roll on the floor regretting his decision. Let him fight his battles in his own way and we, ours.

Dear Sakmongkol

“DAP cannot bend backwards to accommodate Tunku Aziz who seems to think he is bigger than life.”

Those who personally know Tunku Aziz will agree with your statement. The man has an enormous ego, too big for his own good. When he joined the DAP, people were surprised. T Aziz explained to the surprised press (before that he was the ex-founding president of Transparency Malaysia) that his decision for joining the DAP was that he admired their stand on corruption, and that he had been observing them for a long time and was therefore comfortable with the so-called Chinese chauvinistic party. So that was no hurried decision by this sophisticated 70-year (at that time) old man. He was not tricked into it. He joined the DAP voluntarily after studiously studying it for many years (his own words), and that of course meant that he was OK with the likes of Lim Kit Siang, et al.

So why the sudden turn and subsequent bitterness? Firstly, he deviated badly from DAP’s stand on human rights. The DAP supported the Bersih movement for clean and fair elections. T Aziz did not, and disagreed that street demonstrations was the way to go. But the DAP did not publicly criticized T Aziz for his stand on this issue. When his term in the senate (representing Penang) ended, the DAP proposed someone else. This was a big blow for a man with an out-sized ego, so he resigned in a huff. Thereafter he attacked the DAP in the most vehement terms, as if the DAP was his eternal sworn archenemy, not the party he spoke about so admiringly just a couple of years ago after a long “courtship”.

As mentioned earlier Tunku Aziz was the founding President of Transparency Malaysia. But after a few years he couldn’t get along with those who ran it and he resigned from TIM. One might disagree with people who run an organization but need not resign from that organization unless it has changed its principles. Clearly TI Malaysia is still the same fearless corruption fighter it has always been. But these days Tunku Aziz is much more at home with the corrupted politicians in UMNO/BN. If he is being made used of he obviously don’t care, or perhaps to him that is more tolerable than being insulted by the loss of face of not having his senate term extended.

The perception is Tunku Aziz is suffering from a severe dose of sour grapes, and his comments are viewed now in this manner. Although he is old in years, he has to show some maturity, or his actions and comments will be shown the dust heap. Grow up pls Tunku!

This is a very article. I hope together tengku zulpuri, DAP will go far in Pahang. Seriously, DAP need a breakthrough in that state.

Meanwhile if only Hisham Rais can join DAP, DAP NS would have added boost

Dato, when Tunku Aziz was in the DAP he was rewarded with a vice chairmanship and senatorship. When he was enjoying these perks he was a happy camper.

At first he had his way and the DAP let him be.Until one day Lim Guan Eng asked him to clamped up.Clamped up means keep his big mouth shup and stop pooping like a chicken's backside.

Lim Guan End telling him off publicly really hurt his feelings.I think Guan Eng suspect he was up to no good, and did it on purpose to forced him to show his true colors. It worked. He started throwing his tantrums like a spoilt bratand quit in a fit.

He has since been acting like a woman scorned and has been badmouthing the DAP since. But one thing Tunku Aziz has been acting many times worse that a woman scorned.Very worse. that.I never expect a man his stature would one day sunk this low.

Good luck to this man who has finally found his real happiness with his new bed fellows, the corrupted Umnoputras.

It's his feudal mindset. Since he is a royal and a Malay, the DAP must give him preferential treatment, respect etc etc.
If he felt that the Bersih rally is wrong, then shut up. The party is not expected to go along how Aziz thinks. This man is like a scorned women who wants to cut off her husband's penis.

You are being very generous with this bloke. More than he deserves. I find that he is a master hypocrite of the highest order. This anglophile now considers himself to be a champion of Islam and the Malays. Since when he has been one?

Anonymous,  30 May 2014 at 15:33

This feudal pest is now doing the bidding, just like Hassan Ali,Zulkifli Nordin and Ibrahim Ali, for his corrupted UMNO Baru.He must have discovered it to be very rewarding.

Nothing should surprise us in the world of politics.

Some people are drawn to politics because of a genuine desire to change the world for the better.

Others are drawn to politics because of the need to satisfy their deep and dark narcissistic urges. (See for example descriptions of
"narcissistic personality disorder")

And then there are the psychologically unstable types who are drawn to extremist political movements such as fascism (e.g. Perkasa in Malaysia) and to "hard left" Marxism-Leninism varieties such as Maoism and Trotskyism.

Tunku Aziz is bad shingles!
If at all DAP took him in to make use of him, it sure must be in bad taste.

If he is so good, why then is he still alone, so all alone, standing alone for years now, and UMNO/BN won't even dare touch him with a 6-foot pole?

Anonymous,  30 May 2014 at 15:46

Why does a person join politics? Is it because of positions one can get later on or because of the opportunity to contribute and serve the country?

Sadly, the majority of those dabbling in politics are self-serving.

This is why we can see them (lalang people) leaving their party simply because they could not get what they wanted.

As rightly pointed out by Dato', it is absolutely fair to leave a party when it has diverted from its original aim(s).

Anyway, it will not be a loss but a blessing in disguise for a party if its members leave as they now know who are the members who are true to its cause.

Let it be said that lalang people do not get far in politics. They do not command respect from the Rakyat (and their party bosses) as they are viewed as opportunists.

Only those who dare to sacrifice themselves for the party cause and the country will rise to the top (unless they are in UMNO - which is full of lalang, lickers, polishers who are all self serving and unprincipled people).

Never ever trust this Tunku Aziz. He is a loose cannon.

Karpal Singh was a DAP national Chairman. This means that you can go to the top irregardless of race if you are capable !

DAP fight for justice, equality and fairness!

Unlike UMNO/MCA, everyone irregardless of race is welcome to join DAP.

He thought DAP was like Umno. Once recognized as a warlord, they will treat you like one with all the trimmings and a free hand to dip into the cookie jar. Realizing that it was not the case he left in a huff and never quite recover to these days. Ignore him because no one is really listening to him anyway. He has no credibility.

Teluk Intan will go down in Malaysian political history as the first election or by election where we have so many cabinet ministers descending to this small sleepy town in Malaysia.Dozens of ministers came to Teluk Intan with their sleeves rolled up ready to rock and roll and to hit below the belt.Bikini dolls, gutter politics and the kitchen sink.Everything goes.

This is a no hold's bar fight to the brutal finish, with the regime not taking any chances by sending in the most despised and feared biker gangs of mat rempits. With dozens of ministers, hundreds of biker gangsters all going against a twenty seven years old lady candidate from the DAP/PR coalition. One need not hold the PHD's of the University of Mars which many of our so called graduate ministers hold to figure out who is going to stand on top of the pile of debris when the fight is finally over and done.

Teluk Intan will go down in history as having the first Malay lady MP from the DAP and many firsts too. Many international tourists has come to know about Teluk Intan's Leaning Tower of Pisa because of their curiosity to know more about this young political princess and rock star who have taken the Malaysian political scene by storm.

Soon thousands,if not tens of thousands of international tourists will flock to Teluk Intan to see the famous lady MP in person. The local economy will boom because of the non stop of visiting tourists.First class hotels and sky scrappers will shoot up overnight.

Tomorrow,Teluk Intan voters should all close ranks and go all out and vote for Dyana Sofya to be their next MP.

“A Malay who speak entirely in English?”

How in the world would he fit in with Umno and their orcs? Those bumpkins would not understand this ‘English Malay gentleman’. Perhaps overawe by a Malay Mat Salleh?

Buang masa sahaja. Salam

Just imagine Tunku Aziz trying to insult Dyana's intelligence by lecturing her and giving unsolicitated advice.

tmf 31 May 2014 at 09:51

Yes, the DAP will not babysit you even when you are Malay. I know that when I went to Kuala Libis to campaign for you. I went to the DAP centre looking for you and eventually the DAP members who still didn't know much about you took me to you with their bike, on the way, I had the chance to explain to them what you stand for and about your blogs. I eventually managed to meet you and salam with you near a Chinese coffee shop, after that some of them asked why I went all the way from KL to support you,I repeated what I know about you through your writings and your blog. The point is, if you are sincere in serving and articulate your view well, even if DAP does not babysit you, there will be people like me, who is not a party member, willing to go all out to support you. Btw, the result of Kuala Libis was delayed and announced last, I was suspecting some foul play and in Teluk Intan, the integrity of the polling must be carefully guarded.

I respect Tunku Aziz for his good deeds. I must respect him because he is older. But because he is an old man now, not all what he is saying will be correct. He was brougth up such a way that make him like that. Even if we can't under his english. We can understand what the point of his. Nobody perfect but some people have skill to understand any people at the age. It is not critical advice but it is some sort of lack of substance.
When you are getting older becareful. But sincere advice is more important.

Tungku Aziz writing in “The great meddler or the crisis inventor?” on 25 May 2008 in NST says:

“It must be an emotionally bruising experience for Dr Mahathir…Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has made it clear he has no intention of taking the taunts lying down…He (Mahathir) has recklessly propagated the politics of fear among Malays following UMNO’s recent electoral reverses, with consequences too terrible to contemplate…UMNO should consider itself fortunate to be rid of him. I hope history will be kinder to him than many Malaysians now think he deserves…I am writing this column in the peace and quiet of the Goodenough Club of the University of London in … which has for sometime now become my favourite London base. Here in civilised, understated surroundings I am allowed the luxury of detachment, be it ever so brief, from the Malaysian political scene that is getting more muddled and muddied by the day. Distance allows us a priceless opportunity to stand back and reflect without distorting influence of being too close to events. Malaysians must learn to recognise and distinguish the wanton destroyers from the true builders of our nation in the wider context.” ; (my emphasis)

And earlier on 13 April 2008, he started “THERE comes a time, in the life of every nation, when in a remarkable and totally unexpected twist of fate, an event occurs that will influence the course of its history.”

Anything askew with the above. No, none at all, if it comes from Tunku Aziz, and always in ‘impeccable English’. Not if ‘engagement’ and ‘disengagement’ does NOT contradict each other so wantonly. Like a marriage gone wrong, divorce is nasty business: Adam, right or wrong – he is a smooth-talking rascal; Eve right or wrong – she is a greedy siren.

But, I thought all along political disengagement in civilised surroundings, even in torrid Malaysia, demand a higher ethical standard.

As much as he hopes and prays that history will be kinder to Mahathir, I too hope his erstwhile friends will pray that history will be kinder to him as an ex-senior mentor of DAP despite late enrolment (I actually thought he was sage-like when he engaged himself in politics, then). Unlike him, privileged from birth and able to luxuriate even at this age in civilised, understated surroundings, unhurried detachment for me arrives in much simpler, prosaic, and if you like, proletarian manner – a quiet moment in the park observing children of all races frolicking together.

Anyone who intends to be builders must build bridges, not dismantle them – that’s for destroyers.

Is today the day when an event “that will influence the course of (our) history?” Make it that day!

“Each of us must check our own behaviour to prevent a decline in national ethics” – anon
