UMNO: speaking when the chips are down?

It doesn't matter if people think UMNO speaks in bellicose language when chips are down. Indeed, UMNO must always behave as though it is besieged. What would you rather do? Allow the UMNO heartland be taken over by NGOs such as Perkasa? Or allow Pas and PKR capture UMN's source of support? Allow the basic beliefs in UMNO's struggle to grow limp? Then you lose by default.
UMNO must speak on the issues that it is meant to do. Speak about issues affecting Malays. Address their fears. Reassure them. Except that we speak with the voice of reason and moderation. Perkasa is not UMNO nor is UMNO dictated by what Perkasa does. UMNO is not ready to abdicate.
The sore point about Perkasa's message is that UMNO under the leadership of DS Najib wants to abandon the policies laid down by the NEP. The NEP has been replaced by other policies not less committed to achieving what the NEP set out to do.
Not true.
But DS Najib is looking at the big picture now. The affirmative policies are still there but leavened with other factual foundations. You must leverage on competitiveness, good governance, meritocracy and transparency. The mocking cynicism is expected because, its true there have been many transgressions and abuses. Cronyism and corruption. They are all there. Yet, these shouldn't be an excuse not to press on with the NEM and the new vision of UMNO.
It does not matter if Najib and Muhyidin play the good and bad cop roles. One has to keep its ship on even keel. Allowing others to hijack UMNO causes would be a stupid way of managing UMNO.
If there is anything we can learn from the enthusiastic reception of Perkasa, it is the revelation that the Malay heartland is not quite ready to embrace Najib's 1 Malaysia concept. This is primarily due to the fact, that Najib hasn't explained his vision properly yet. But he is after all only over a year into his premiership. I suspect, his cabinet colleagues have not fully understood the concept yet too.
So what Muhyidin has done is to take action so that UMNO's core causes are not eroded by some young upstart. He is sending the signals that while it's true that Najib is embarking on his 1Malaysia vision, the fundamentals of UMNO's mission and reason for existence remain. What Muhyidin does is to reassure the Malays that their best bet is with UMNO.

We're very2 confused..how do I explain to my kids?

On one hand..DPM want all rounded students>>active in Sports & extra curricular activities. On the other hand , the only criteria PM is using to give scholarships is 9A+..

So,whats the bottom line?Wats the take home that I hv to tell my kid taking his SPM this year...

Do I tell him to ignore everything and just study, memorise i.e do wateva it takes to get 9A+ Don't be swayed by the BIG NOISE about all rounded students cos bottom line PM don't give any value to that.

Don't be conned by the words of those who talks about the total package. Its all empty talk.

Thats leadership by confusion in action.

what a load of bull!
not your usual thoughtful stuff!

Dato Sak

That Muhyiddin is complementing Najib on 1Malaysia is too hard to swallow.

The indications and talk among the grassroots are that the No2 is building his base to erode No1's position in the party.

They are competiting not complementing.

The conclusions you arrive do not jive with the overt and the covert moves in play between both of them.

It will unravel as it had been for Dr M and his deputies in the past when the wayang kulit stage loses the light to keep the shadows alive.

Dato Sak

I have to agree with Anonymous 13 July 2010 21:12, this particular post does not measure up to your usual critical analysis and depth of thinking. It lowers significantly the bar of your usual intellect.

Not enough sleep? Or trying to play footsy with these two chaps you are writing about.

Are you Chinese? Rest easy.
It's kacang for you to get JPA scholarships from now.
Now there's new Affirmative Action. Najib just found out Chinese are so poor, poorer than the poorest kampung Malay.
For this year, from 10 As lower to 9As.
Next year the bar will be lower still. Maybe with 7As your kid can sail through to England.
This year 1,500 increased to 1,750.
Next year, 3,000 scholars. If not you complain in the paper.
Uncle Chua will help you.
Better still present memo to Agong like Hindraf did yesterday.
This BN government rich you know. Who says going bankrupt?
But first you gotta make sure BN wins by voting for them.
I fear the new DAP-led government may think of reverting to giving more scholarships to Malays.
Best of luck to your kid. Ask him to memorise all the text-books. He goes to tuition from Std one right?
No prob, dude.

Salam Dato',

Sir

To get a helicopter vision, you still need a base to take off and landing.

So its back to basic.

Maybe Hishamudin will be able to tell his cousin, Najib, how his grandfather - Dato Onn Jaafar able to pull a majority of Malay of different background to rally behind him to form Umno in 1946.

The main caused back then was the survival of Malay in Tanah Melayu and the sentiment will never ever fade from our heart except among some of the current Malay political leaders.

simple as that.

Ps - KJ considering not to defend his KP post when his term expires.
I'll take it with a pinch of salt.

So it is ok for Umno to have siege mentality. But it is not ok for the Malays to have the same mentality?

schenker78 14 July 2010 at 09:15

Who is funding PERKASA in the first place?? IS it Mahathir ???

or Vincent Tan since VT and Ibarhim Ali are very good friends???

To run an organization, need money. I dont think its coming from Ibrahim Ali, as he seems kedekut sangat.....

Quiet Despair,

I am still waiting for you to answer my question to you in "Umno:Stepping up to next level" ...13:52 and 14:00

tak tahu nak jawab ker atau takut???

Anonymous,  14 July 2010 at 11:06

So you are saying that the answer to Malay insecurity is to put on a show? The answer to Malay insecurity ultimately is to honestly deal with it consistently.

The reason why UMNO/BN cannot walk away from bellicose shouting is their failure to address the insecurities honestly. Continuing use of it just says UMNO/BN still don't have an answer and avoiding the problem.

What do UMNO/BN have to do? They need to admit they need a revolutionary change - a cathartic one. Then they can find an answer. Keep shouting they way they are doing just give false assurance to themselves and they continue not to have any answer.

Yes, they will lose ground to PAS if they stop shouting but that is what they need.

Dato'

Is UMNO so predictable ? When the chips are down, the siege mentality prevails.

Are there better ways to motivate UMNO members ?

If none, why no outsource to APCO then.
