Let’s not get sentimental over Ling Liong Sik

I am not at all sentimental about Ling Liong Sik being charged in court. by sentimental here, I take it to mean, regretting or feeling sad that he is being charged. In my previous article I merely asked how can it be possible that Ling Liong Sik was able to prepare cabinet papers for discussion. Or that his version of the price of land to be purchased was accepted without debate. In open court, cabinet notes and minutes will have to be submitted. Many people will salivate at the prospects.
It is impossible to infer that in previous meetings the subject of any land purchases by PKA and KDSB were not raised. It's not like buying kacang puteh.
I am precisely not being sentimental by raising the issue. Because then, that would make the whole cabinet which presided on that day, culpable. Ling's lawyer must put every cabinet member deciding on that day, on the stand. And when that happens, if some people who are held in iconic esteem by some are placed in the dock, we don't want any outpouring of protests- don't, because you will be accused of being sentimental.
If that is the case, then we expect many would be charged. If I am being sentimental, I will say, come on, let Ling go because he is a former senior minister, because he was MCA's boss and because he is now a TUn. Also because he was actually PM for a few hours. That would be sentimental.
But to raise questions that would probably lead to others being in the same boat like Ling Liong Sik hardly qualifies being sentimental. Sometimes these young cikus need to be educated. You come back from Amerika, you think you are very kleva!
I am willing to say, by allowing a very high profile individual be charged, DS Najib is showing a strong hand in this. He is signaling that he is fully committed to transparency and low tolerance of corrupt practices and abuse of power. people will say that all this is sandiwara. Who cares, because the most important thing, someone is now charged. The public wants this and this will help his credibility. If this is a start, PKR people need not shout here and there asking the government to rope in more people. That will come. What if other Tuns were to be treated in the same manner? Then I hope if there is public outcry, don't say they are being sentimental.
Beyond that, we can expect other high profile people will be charged with a host of cases. Maybe now it's time to restore indictment for the 18 high profile cases which Minister Rais Yatim once said. We need to tell Rais he shouldn't hold back. Pressure the government to charge all the people in the 18 high profile cases. It is now also opportune for newly appointed senator Ezam Mohd Noor to reveal the contents of his Pandora's boxes containing indisputable information on corruption. Bila lagi Yb Ezam?
This is a right step. Charge first and let the accused have their day in court. Who knows we may learn many things if Ling Liong Sik intends to make amends. Provided of course, we are not told before hand by the AG that only ONE person is responsible for the PKFZ thing. Let's not pre-determine the number of accused in this case.

Dear Dato',

Agree with your points. All those who did the crime, must pay the time.

I'd rather be sentimental about the citizens who have to face an uncertain future due to the rot that had permeated the system.

On this account DS Najib gets the thumbs up. Hopefully he is consistent , avoids bad company and apple polishers.

obviously there are others too......

Dato Sak

The charges preferred against the former Transport Minister is misconceived in law and may not hold water. I am not a lawyer but he is charged as misleading the Cabinet so that the Govt lost money!

In the first place Cabinet papers are prepared by the Secretary General to the Ministry and his staff. Surely they would be privy to the supply of the wrongful information. Secondly it is clearly stated that the valuation of the the land at RM25 psf was inclusive of the compounded interest based on deferred payment! In other words that is a valuation AFTER DEVELOPMENT! IT IS NOT THE CURRENT VALUE BASED ON CURRENT MARKET PRICE! The current market price was stated as RM10 psf! So how did the Cabinet make a fundamental error of judgement? Therefore you are right to state the whole Cabinet should be charged, not Tun Ling alone.

I believe the charge will fail in court and the case will be thrown out!

Thumbs up for PM Najib.Whatever transpires from this Ling's case...PM Najib have already given a clear signal that nobody will be protected and he will not interfere with the process to get to the truth.

Now,PM Najib have demonstrated that he is truly a leader.

Why praise najib when he himself got so many scandals to answer. Remember : Lingam case is the mother of all judiciary miscarriage. If that is not properly address it will be pointless to care about all other cases as the integrity of judges is highly suspicious.

Anonymous,  30 July 2010 at 17:54

Why is there to heap praises on Najib?

He is trying to use Ling as the scapegoat so that all focus is on the PKFZ scandal and rakyat forgets about his scandal.

What about the lost jet engines and a scapegoat was found...that poor guy had been tortured military-style?

Najib himself needs to be put in the dock for so many defence scandals under his watch then.

Don't you agree?

Richard Cranium 30 July 2010 at 18:02

Sir, no one, outside of about half of MCA and his family, will shed a tear for Ling.

Every man and his dog knew why the govt took this long to take him to task. Your previous blog made a passing mention of the phrase "honor among thieves" is one hint of such reticence.

Anonymous,  30 July 2010 at 19:17

this PKZF scandal cannot be the doing of one scapegoat - Ling.

What about other UMNO goons?

Najib is bias, protect the other UMNO goons and only drag Ling out.

And, the KJ family saga about SCOMI and getting funds from Libya is another case that needs to be investigated. Khairy and his ilk should be dragged to court too.

Bertaubatlah Najib dan UMNO!!!

orang kampung.

Dear Dato',

Most people undoubtedly claim that the Title " Tun " cannot be sued or drag to the court. Let's wait and see if this is for real or sandiwara and not following the script.Time will tell on whether justice will prevail in this country and prove the rakyat wrong. We do not want to see the goverment of the day become the loser in the case of 'Kasitah Gadam,Ramli Yahya, Dato Eric Chia of Perwaja Steel Mill.

schenker78 30 July 2010 at 20:24

By right, the whole of current cabinet should resign and an interim BN gov should be in place headed by the very few good people in UMNO.

Let the whole cabinet and ex ministers go on trial incl hot shots Musa hassan and gani Patail....

Sak, you can say whatever u want, we know this is sandiwara. They trying to fool some section of the voters to belief UMNO is changing but even Najib as the biggest rotten fish head should be on trial, not forgetting Abdullah Badawi who was implicated in Iraq Oil For Food deals and Scomi nuclear parts to Libya...

schenker78 30 July 2010 at 20:26

Samy Vellu bila lagi??? Aku rasa Najib akan charge dia kalau dapat peluang so Najib akan jadi hero dikalangan anti Semy Value....

Anonymous,  30 July 2010 at 21:05

I would not praise Najib as he is using this issue to prop up his flagging image. But then who will trust a PM who himself is carrying a heavy baggage - khalwat (in PD), abuse of funds when he was education minister, corruption in defence equipment purchase, Altantuya, disappearance of PI Bala etc, etc.
One who lives in a glass house should not throw stones.

Habib RAK 30 July 2010 at 21:11

Dear Sak, Quoting you "I am willing to say, by allowing a very high profile individual be charged, DS Najib is showing a strong hand in this. He is signaling that he is fully committed to transparency and low tolerance of corrupt practices and abuse of power"

In my view, the noose around Najib's neck is tightening and the person behind it is none other then Mahathir. Thus, the only way for Najib to counter this is to attack Mahathir but indirectly. By charging LLS, Najib kills two birds with one stone. First, he is seen as doing the right thing like your quote above. Second, he tells Mahathir that his cabinet can be implicated. Its all connected. To me, this is nothing to do with doing the right thing. Its just survival action. Najib has too many skeletons to preach transparency, no corruption, etc. This move also has a balancing act between MACC Abu Kassim vs AG Gani Patail/IGP Musa. Connect the dots and you will see the picture.

Anonymous,  30 July 2010 at 21:48

Why should we give any credit to Najib? Instead, Najib should declare that this got nothing to do with 'gomen'. Otherwise it just confirm that PM infact got a say on who should or should not be charged and AG is just a puppet.

Anonymous,  30 July 2010 at 21:51

Dato Sak

I tend to agree with Habib Rak's take on the issue of the arrest of Ling Liong Sik.

The Malaysian public got it right when it says that the arrest is a 'SANDIWARA", Najib is playing his cards welll against the ribbing and sniping he gets from Mahathir.

It is a left-hook punch on Mahathir.

Whatever, a criminal is a criminal, it does not matter if he or she is a Tun or a royalty.

Here is a good take of the PKFZ scandal and the arrest of Tun Ling Liong Sik.

Worth a read:

This is a ploy to hoodwink the rakyat. Even the PAC was surprised that DrLing was hauled up instead of ChanKChoy & OC Phang ! Which begs the question why so?

The modus operandi is thus - better to silence the critics once and for all by charging the kepala ikan for all to see. After this Dr.Ling will go scot free in Malaysia's kangaroo courts and the matter is thus closed. Dr.Ling would be proven innocent legally, the corrupted will be let off the hook, the cronies still get their monies and the best thing is that the real criminals will walk free.

A small sacrifice by the BN to hoodwink the rakyat by showing that the gomen is impartial while at the same time give legality to put an end to this fiasco.

Dear Dato',
It seems that nothing is right with what Najib does-damn if you do,damn if you don't.The verdict is already out even before the judge and jury is known. To some people nothing is right with everything..

Anonymous,  31 July 2010 at 05:28

Eventually, it ends with nothing but silence as the grave. it will involve many high profile people and then before it happens, someone will definitely shut things up. just like eric chia and mr. noh's secretary.

Dato', you seem to imply that PM has a decision in charging LLS? That means he has the only authority to say who to charge? We smell something stinky. You care to explain? Concerned Malaysia

What is there to be sentimental about an old crook. This is too good for him.
