Thinking of UMNO-1

this is probably how UMNO grassroots see the UMNO leadership

I fear I bring distressing news. UMNO is suffering a possible terminal illness. Things are not as good as they seem.
A few months ago, I was a facilitator and participant at a Pahang UMNO convention. It was held at the UITM campus in Jengka, Termerloh Pahang. At the opening address the Pahang MB said UMNO is like a car. All we need is do some fine tuning- change spark plug, change oil filter, here some bolts, there some nuts. No sooner had he completed his analogy, somebody from the back of the hall, near from where I sat, shouted back. It's not those, we need to change the whole CAR.
There is this gaping dichotomy between what the leader of UMNO feels and what the UMNO grassroots members feel. I fear, the UMNO leadership has the same estimation as the Pahang MB.
Our leadership feels UMNO has regained its balance. It hasn't because in order to regain balance, it must get back its soul. The soul of UMNO isn't motivated by crass materialism, isn't motivated by the overriding desire to enrich oneself. The UMNO soul is nourished by noble ideals, compassion for the rakyat and imbued with a sense of noblesse oblige. We grassroots UMNO member know the manner how our leaders solve problems. PM Najib has to go back to his constituency in Pekan, hand money over to the 140 UMNO branches to carry out the annual general meetings.
UMNO has lost the spirit of voluntarism. And voluntarism as Tocqueville observed in his Democracy in America, formed the basis of a living democracy. There isn't any in UMNIO nowadays.
In my previous post, I said, taking the example in Sibu, the BN which has essentially been UMNOised- sees the voting public as one undifferentiated mass which is buyable. Accordingly UMNO handles this mass the way it knows how to- buy buying them or using the forces of coercion.
The result from Sibu shows the voting population is a heterogeneous mass, consisting of various segments, each motivated by different urgings. Some want money and these can be bought. Others are concerned about issues such as good governance, quality leadership, justice, etc. others are marginalized group whose plight is seen as the outcome of politics by the [powers that be.
UMNO doesn't realize this just as the Pahang MB didn't realize that the problem is no longer confined to just doing some fine-tuning and tweaking here and there. The problem has become so acute that the whole car must be changed.
The saddest thing is now quite apparent. UMNO has lost all high grounds and have decided to do the only thing left in its armoury to try and win back the rakyat - bribe them using their own money. It therefore shows what it is good in. The only skill it seems to have, honed by years of practice, developed into an art and now concluded as the cause of the suffering faced by the rakyat. But what is sadder than even the saddest is that UMNO has to pretend the rakyat don't know all that. And it pretended right in front of them. – Obiwan Walla

Dato' what is more worrying is that UMNO through its proxy PERKASA is trying to instigate the common Malays that they are threatened by the growing strength of the Chinese and reminding us of May 13. In actual fact, Pakatan Rakyat coalition is threatening UMNO.

Terminal cancer is the diagnosis. So what is the cure? Surgery may not help. So time for HOSPICE and for Datuk to start looking for a fresh body to continue your noble effort at reforms.

Salam Dato'. Spot on. Well written article. Couldn't agreed more. The root of UMNO itself is causing its problem. How many member in UMNO who were aiming to become a Ketua in branches and every level of UMNO with good attention in their heart to help the needy. Most of them going for the post for the sake of easy money. I'm coming from family who is loyal to UMNO. My father, uncle, nephew and basically each one of us is an UMNO supporters. Every time we gather, politic stories is a must. Unfortunately, just recently the tone of the conversation is the same, the plague in UMNO. I'm not saying UMNO is totally corrupted but with this people in UMNO any thing can happen in the future. Now we don't need to continue our studies to be successful. Just be an UMNO member and you can be an instant millionaire. I'm not jealous with this people. We can say it a rezeki matter as it has been put in our head by our ancestor. But when your socks off to meet ends meet, we will wonder what are the purpose of our education. It doesn't help when the mentioned people is an arrogant and selfish type. I've met some of this people with their big car, expensive cloth, HP etc showing their arrogant with their big talk, big plan, big money and basically everything is big. But basically we how the got the money. Actually, a lot of thing need to be said because it is sad this thing happen in UMNO. The problem is we as rakyat don't have any altenative to turn to. PKR and PAS? Wasting my time to write about them. Any way, enough babbling for now. Please continue your writing Dato'. It is a breath of fresh air. Salam

Assalammualikum wbt Dear Dato',

1.UMNO is man made.It will not last forever.Only the ALL MIGHTY (and HIS commandments) is immortal.

2.UMNO have lost its way.It will slog along before it tumble and falls ...

3.So what ? Is the end of UMNO also signify the end of the Malays or Malaysia ?

4.Surely we Malays together with our other Malaysian brothers and sisters can rise above UMNO and make this nation great again, insyAALLAH.

"UMNO has lost all high grounds and have decided to do the only thing left in its armoury to try and win back the rakyat - bribe them using their own money."

Datuk...As least you being honest and I don't see why the Chinese wouldn't not vote Umno if majority of it's leadership and members make things work the way you would like to. Integrity, dignity and honesty are what Umno seriously lacked. BN-Umno should thanked voters for making BN the government and especially Umno owed them gratitude...not the other way round as most Umno members expect.

Greenbottle 20 May 2010 at 10:31

it's all science really. after 50 years or so of having a free hand any party will become corrupted and inbred. in hindsight umno is a lot better than most but still, it has to go now. it's past the expiry date and beyond redemption.

and similarly PKR which is essentially for the most part comprise of umno people albeit umno rejects and some umno reformists will not do any good for malaysia. it's cut from the same cloth. they think alike.

the most interesting and potentially feasible option is for PAS to team up with DAP to bring down BN. and all the good people in umno can join PAS to strenghen the malays and safeguard Islamic interests.

UMNO tu memang the whole CAR kena tukar. Menyangak tahun 1980-an dan 2010-an, semua dah advance.. Kalau dulu, harta seorang CEO yang isterinya tak kerja, kena freeze, mampus satu family dia. Tapi sekarang dah lain, kalau harta dia kena freeze, harta bini dan anak, kaum dan kerabat walau TAK KERJA belambak-lambak. Maknanya, kebocoran syarikat dah terlampau teruk, itu baru CEO, belum "orang politik" yang dok bela CEO tu. Antaranya... (maaf tak boleh sebut.. faham-faham sendiri).. siap sound " macam cina, nak bunuh anak isteri" ... wakaka... UMNO... UMNO.. kau dah 64 tahun... penasihat dah tentu lebih tua lagi... masih dengan 25% lagi ke... hello UMNO... rasanya cakap orang tua2 dulu patut apply kat kau sekarang ni... rumah kata pi.. kubur kata mari... suruh tukar penasihat tak mau...keep on with what you think best..

...adioss....

We have sanitized a lot of what was previously considered grossly wrong. Your youtube video gives us an insight into this sanitization. The act of mencilok was the pride of a penyamun. "Kami lah penyamun di dalam ini negeri. Kerja merompak, mencilok dan mencuri..." Today it is merely considered as a MILD MISDEED. That is how we as a nation has today considered the many gross and sinful acts. Mild misdeeds indeed!, and may god save us for the years to come.

Why shld grassroot volunteer & spend own money to keep the leaders in position to acquire more wealth?
Susah sama susah..senang makan sendiri.

Datuk,

Would it be true for us to say that to UMNO members, you are one of 'those' who dwell on the Lunatic Fringe of UMNO. The REAL UMNO members are what you despise.

Unfortunately Dato', all your Tirades bears no effect on them.

UMNO has long been hijacked by the likes of Khir Toyo, Bung Karno and now Ibrahim Ali to mention just a few!! They make up the Toxic ingredients of this Dish called UMNO, spiced with some Old Basi Condiments, the likes of Rais Yatim and Tengku Adnan.

Only thing we can say is Goooddddd Luuucccckkk..

Hip hip hooray Sak. No one can think better of UMNO's terminal illness than you.

Being an UMNO believer, I am interested to see you elaborate in your next piece on the total renovation of UMNO.
Do you mean go for surgery, chemo and radiation. or like Tun M is foond of saying, amputate before gangreen sets in?

Yes UMNO has lost its soul. Only left with its physique.
This is because UMNO leaders do not want to hear the suggestions of its grassroots.

Time to listen to people like you who do not have a stake but care to redress the party's failings.
The Umno President like others before him only listen to certain select leaders.

Some are sycophants who whisper sweet nothings, tell things which are pleasing to the ears.
They fear telling the truth because of their rice-bowl.
Some like Rais Yatim, pengampu bodek or curry favor him.

Today the PM speaks, tomorrow he will be elaborating with more nasi tambah or lebih sudu dari kuah.
We need more Hang Kadim and not kaki penyamun or kaki pengampu.

I suggest UMNO leaders view all the P Ramlee movies and see how the genius thinks way ahead of his time. P.Ramlee did portray tragic-comedies which some of our politicians in both sides of the political divide are guilty of.
In Umno General Assembly for example, many speak vehemently, sometimes laced with unfunny jokes, but empty viewpoints.
They loved to codemn the other races and the PKR which make them heroes and won applause from the crowd.

Not many dare to challenge what the leadership is doing to better Umno as the ruling party.
Talking about volunterism, volunteer bodek or sokong bawa rebah adalah.
Volunteer your jiwa raga for the sake of the party? No siree. That was in the past where members surrender jewellery and cash for the party.

Now they expect the party to give money to them.
Dulu party cikgu. now party orang kaya.
Way back then people are reluctant to hold important post for fear they cannot shoulder it.
Now they volunteer to contest though their only strength is their money.

Nobody volunteers to resign. They wait to be sacked. We will see what Bung Mokhtar will do next.

Sak, do you voice your opinions like this in the Umno Assemblies you attended?

Najib should deploy his people to read blogs and take action to correct the discrepancies in the party and Govt voiced by credible bloggers.

Only after the Sibu loss, did Najib realised his folly despite being alerted that money hand-out is passe.
But we must give credit to him for acknowledging that BN's campaign was outmoded, lacking creativity and earnestness.
It takes a great man to admit his mistake.

I think Najib is a good listener and willing to accept other people's viewpoints unlike Tun M.
But do the the party top-guns realised this?

I like to paraphase the Celtic folk song Loch Lomond to UMNO.

Oh I take the high road,
And yee take the low road,
And I'll be in power afore ye.

Abdul Haq,  20 May 2010 at 13:15

Salam Dato,

Thanks for your photograph..at least now I know how you look. I having reading your for the last week or so.

You very well thought off and articulately written articles are a pleasure to read. The English is good and definitely not learnt in your typical SMK Pahang...

I wonder what a seemingly principled, intelligent and insightful man like you is still doing in the den of thieves and iniquity that is UMNO....!!!

Anonymous,  20 May 2010 at 13:30

Dato'

The car cited by MB of Pahang could be a top luxurious car like Audi Q7.

With the best ride and excellent sound proofing, the driver of this luxurious car is invariably insulated from the real world.

Give him a old Proton Saga instead in order to save UMNO from self destruction.

Anonymous,  20 May 2010 at 15:29

As for me I don't care who rules this country as long as there is

1. An independent Judiciary, MACC, PDRM and EC.

2. Rule of Law applied fairly. Even Najib can be jailed for corruption in Sibu.

3. A free media.

4. Equality for all citizens.

Cikgu Tua,  20 May 2010 at 15:56

I am sorry to tell "Quiet Despair" that he is wrong - Najib isn't a good listener...he only pretends to listen but in his heart, he thinks, if you so smart, how come you not PM of Malaysia?" I know because I have advised him but his ears are deaf. Dato' Sak will probably be in his black book, if not Pahang MB's black book by now. Najib and all the top leaders of Umno are just for show.

Anonymous,  20 May 2010 at 17:55

Dato, you are in Umno. Do you speak up like this at Umno gatherings? And if you do, what was their reaction. And most importantly, if they faham at all.

Another thing I'd like to know is: Are the elected Umno reps aware of what their opposition colleagues are doing? Let me spell it for them: The Pas/pkr/dap mps are working hard. Just follow them on Twitter, dear Umno MPs/Adun. They are forever doing something to connect with the rakyat.
Come to think of it, I never hear of Umno MPs doing anything. Klu ada pun, for the wrong reasons, like marrying a singer or actress.

While I'm not an Umno member, i guess i could be categorised as Umno-friendly as I do have family members and friends in Umno.
A friend who is from JB longs for the Umno days of his father and grandfather.
These are his words: Kat Johor, kita dlm Umno ni mcm extended family. Gotong royong during weddings, kenduri, beri tuition free, mengajar budak2 mengaji quran etc.
Small things like these that Umno needs to do to find its way back.
(As sibu still rankles with me:) Bukan tabur duit kat church or vernacular schools.

Dato',

How very apt & the Video says it all "Kami Penyamun Negeri..." - Our Ketuanan Jaguh Kampung UMNO/BN Penyamun Leaders, only to be conned by the younger & "Smarter" ones...

Bapak Borek, Anak Rintek...

And they then Blame everything, every race, every religion, every one BUT Themselves !

Yes as you rightly say...the UMNO/BN Institution has been "Hijacked, Abused, Corrupted & Destroyed beyond repair" since 1969....

The rest is History...

It would be an Impossible Task to compare or bring UMNO BARU back to its Glorious “Original, Honourable, Respected, Dedicated & Accountable Organisation Days...

With Tengku & his 1st Cabinet members of Distinction, Honour & Integrity from pre 1957 until 1969...

When Tengku was Betrayed by the "Ketuanan UMNOputra Elites" who "Hijacked, Abused, Corrupted & Destroyed" our "Original Constitution" to what it is today...

But then again who were the "Instigators" of the 13th May 1969 tragedy....still hanging around?

My heart & soul is still with Tunku & the "Original UMNO/Perikatan" & his 1st cabinet..

flyer168 20 May 2010 at 19:44

Part 2 - Truth & Reconciliation...

The writings, advise & warnings have been on the wall for decades...from our 1st PM, 3rd PM, etc

The Ketuanan Jaguh Kampung UMNO/BN Penyamun Leaders that the Malaysian voters voted for all had "Their Own" Agendas against all the advise & warnings...

Unless we get really serious about cultivating creativity and promoting innovation, the transformation to a knowledge-based economy will not readily happen. And unless that transformation happens, it will not be long before our competitiveness declines.

The problems of the world cannot possibly be solved by skeptics or cynics whose horizons are limited by the obvious realities. We need men who can dream of things that never were - John F. Kennedy

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude - Thomas Jefferson

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add "Within the limits of the Law" because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual - Thomas Jefferson

My heart "bleeds" when I watch all the above recollections on the values, struggles & sacrifices of our forefathers "For the Nation & its Citizens"

Very sad indeed...

I cry for Malaysia...

Anonymous,  20 May 2010 at 20:27

Dato,

Do you really believe change will happen soon enough in UMNO? It is akin when Malaysia football enter World Cup finals.

Anonymous,  20 May 2010 at 22:58

My gosh!
Is it true that UMNO is terminally ill? nah! couldnt be.you must be joking dato.
I am simply amazed that it took you so long to finally realise that all is not well as it seems over a certain TV station , a few newspapers and a few moronic blogs and websites.
As such make a date with a shrink, but make sure he is not a party member who secretly habours to be the next ketua cawangan or is a YB wannabe.nanti susah.he might say that ALL IS WELL.

walla 21 May 2010 at 07:53

I suggest the PM go online and have a heart-to-heart talk to the rakyat.

You can't get a better moment than now. He has made a string of snafu's and gaffe's recently and it's time to retrace his mistakes and make amends. He needs to show (a) he's human, (b) he realizes he has made big mistakes, (c) he wants to show he is really sincere, and (d) he is going to force changes in Umno and in the country.

But before he does that, he should have a list of items he will be talking on. The media should be given advanced notice.

To constitute that list, he needs fresh inputs from people outside his circle. They should not see that as a threat or a dilution of their power. They should in fact see that as an urgent blessing.

Najib should get the Jedi master himself (aka Sakmongkol) on board to constitute that list.

What could go into that list?

It's a long one.....

And since we are apparently up at 10th most competitive nation this year (but it's because the others have fallen on macro measure levels due to the global crisis), he could use this to bolster a new vision going forward to build a better foundation for the country.

He should take this one window of opportunity to cut the crap, clear the air, cull the coyotes and cultivate the best of the rakyat, especially those who don't rub shoulders with politicians.

Anonymous,  21 May 2010 at 07:57

Dato',
Thats the truth with UMNO now. Only a change of government at Federal level can bring positive changes to UMNO. Should they still be relevant to the people at large.

Tanpa Nama,  21 May 2010 at 09:07

As usual, a remarkable post. If you were an important person in UMNO, the party would survive many more years. But you are just talking from the sidelines, which is a real pity. The prospects for the party now look bleak, with money politics destroying its soul, its moral standing, and eventually, its life.

We had Mahathir, Ku Li, etc. Did UMNO change for the better? I doubt having Sak's voice heard is enough for that.

Spirit of volunteering. Now how do we get about to sow those in people's heart?
