We Know what KT did during the Debate

When I wrote an article dismissing the overemphasis on facial expressions and so forth as an indicator of a person's inner qualities, it drew in mixed responses. One response in particular came from a commentator who calls herself Mekyam. She said the following:-

in fact, it is widely accepted among communication experts that body language (facial expressions, gestures and personal space) makes up 55% of all visible human communications, while the spoken word comprises of only 7% and tone of voice, 38%.

and kinesics, the interpretation of body language, is actually a very legitimate branch of communication study and psychology.

Under normal circumstances I would readily accept the validity of her arguments. But the debate that was carried out was NOT a normal circumstance.

The organizers told the contestants not to bring supporters, KHir Toyo did. Not only did he bring in a large number of his supporters, the supporters were coached to berate whatever was spoken by KJ. Each time KJ put across a point, KT's supporters grew bellicose.

KT is a master at such underhand tactics. The TV crewmen were told to focus on KJ's reactions at awkward moments, which were later used to besmirch KJ.

The pictures showed for public consumption were selected poses particularly chosen to expose intended effects. The intended effects being, to suggest that KJ is full of condescension of his rivals.

Hence the methodology stated by Mekyam is a valid one and credible ONLY if it is applied in a situation free from interference and not stage managed.

Khir Toyo has become a street fighting politician, not averse to using gutter politics. Mukhriz Mahathir is easy meat for KT. It is KJ he fears more. This debate was used by KT as yet another part of a series of concerted efforts by KT and his roving band of supporters to spread the hate culture on KJ. The objective is simple, - to demonize and project KJ as a repugnant and contemptible fellow.

These actions I fear, more than the strained facial expressions of KJ are more subversive and insidiously dangerous to UMNO. It is for these reasons that I discount using facial expressions during that particular debate as a measure of leadership qualities.

But if there's no smirk, there's nothing for the camera to record. Then we wouldn't have been so turned off.

Salam Datuk,

I do visit your blog from time to time. I do follow your favourable arguments on KJ. I respected your opinions - although I May not agree with your preference - b'coz you try very hard to argue from the points of reasons.

Yes, I did until you wrote this sentence:
"KT is a master at such underhand tactics. The TV crewmen were told to focus on KJ's reactions at awkward moments, which were later used to besmirch KJ."

You meant to tell the readers that TV9 management is under the behest of Khir?

Wow... all this while I was under the impression that TV9 and its holding company was under the command of Tingkat 4.

Hehehe... so much for being objective.

Yeap, in any condition, we should know that we're on TV where our face will be on screen whether off or on air.

Datuk, it's a waste to see people like you trying hard to fight for KJ.

Just give him some time and if he's the one that you think he is, he will blossom later to his potential.

Right now, he still have more things to learn.

Salam Datuk,

Have been following your blogs and kind of like the way you write.

Just to comment on what fazilogic said.. I just wondered whether you watch a lot of tv programmes - be they 'live' or recorded, edited and then broadcasted at a later time slot or perhaps have been a studio audience? If you have, good for you. But if you haven't.. just a short info, in a talk show programme, most often than not - each presenter/guest has a camera focused on him. Just to catch your spontaneous reaction and usually used as inserts to break visual monotony. Even on guests too. Usage on air? Can be sneaky and not, depends on how controversial you want your show to be.

After reading blogs condemning KJ, perhaps I too have some reservations about him, being a young upstart and all. But Khir Toyo? I refrain from commenting. Oh btw, true or not somebody mentioned in a blog that the moderator, that glib professor 'bocorkan' soalan kepada KT.

Sorry to digress...but if you really want to pick up on facial expressions, I can safely say that KT's face is not any better. Only now it's shinier like there's a glow or something but look carefully, does he have a sweet and you can trust me face?

He was in his element perhaps because:
(a) he knows the questions before
hand(?)
(b) his cheer leading squad was
there
(c) advantage of being an X-MB
(that was booted out by the
people in Selangor)

Come to think of it, none of our politicians are good looking for that matter. Sorry to say this - both men and women, they kind of have sinister looking faces.

And fazilogic, even if Media Prima is under the thumbs of Tingkat 4 (like you are inferring for certain) it will be the chairman, the board of directors and top management if anything that will be in its palm. The studio director will do his shots as he sees fit.. It is a tv show after all. (Unless of course he is a Toyol)

To KJ I have this to say, if you are born to lead, you will lead. A face is just a face. Do not give up but do not do foolish things either.. like doing the "Pro Royal" demo. (Do what you need to do, but hey you've got the means - research your facts first, then ISTIKHARAH..)

You are young and youths need a young leader. Humility comes with experience and if you're not shy to admit mistakes, mend your ways and learn as you go along, Insya Allah you'll be there.

This is the very first time that I'm making a comment when it comes to Khairy Jamaludin. I would have loved to savage him too; except for the fact that Dato' Sakmongkol feels that it is he who is the best of the lot.

Now this is a big surprise for me, for I would have thought Mukhriz would be the one. I've taken a week to read all these posts and comments both for and against KJ, and it's overwhelmingly against him. And after reading the points for him, I do find it intriguing... Why are so many people against him??

Now there's one group that I'm going to totally dismiss when it comes to their opinions in this matter: the Pakatan types/Umno haters. With some of them, they are also "Malay haters".

So, generally with this group, there won't be anything good to say about KJ... only the stereotyped, oft-repeated condescending remarks like "SIL", "FIL" etc that accuse him of using his position for personal gains. And it's probably true too...

Okay, if not KJ, WHO would these people want as Umno Youth Chief? Mukhriz? Nah - "A repeat of dictator father"... Khir Toyo? "&%$#*@!"

Well, who will it be then??

The truth is, some of these people aren't giving their opinions "for the good of Umno" - just making comments for the sake of belittling whoever is the candidate.

In which case, I haven't found a real reason yet to cancel Khairy's name as "the best candidate for the post". I'll keep on reading. However, I think I'm going to encounter just about the same tired condemnations against him - Yeah, that "SIL. FIL" point.

Salam datuk...

Salam Hurmat Mat Cendana...

Pelik.

Salam Perjuangan

Dear Dato',

I think you have lost it this time. You are delusional.

KJ were booed for being himself and for being the son-in-law. I was at haome watching Hujah that evening. I booed KJ as well. I have never talked to KT. Let alone being coached by KT.

Pinch yourself. Make sure you are not being delusional, Dato. Have a self respect.

You looks silly here.

Salam Dato,

1. One of traits of an effective leader is the ability to handle any situation, no matter how trying and challenging it is, without losing his cool, focus and sense of balance. He will always strategise himself and does not easily succumb to any form of provocation. As such, whether the forum was stage managed or otherwise is hardly relevant.

2. Effective communication often relates to 'what is said' and 'what is not said'. 'What is said' is something that is explicit which is loud and clear to the listeners. It is 'what is not said', synonymous with body language, that is problematic. It is implicit in nature that gives rise to different interpretation to diferent listeners depending on their level of intelligence, mindset, prejudices etc. I believe by now the pemuda delegates have listened enough to 'what is said'. They will be inteligent enough to listen to 'what is not said'. Come Mar 09 they will vote wisely not only for the sake of UMNO but for the Malays and the country as a whole.

3. To the candidates who have been too agressive in their campaign, reflect on the quotation of the greatest boxer of all time,Mohammad Ali vis 'float like a butterfly and sting like a bee'. It may work wonders.

Anonymous 12:32 @Gong<-- (Pasir Mas' term almost similar to "Bengong")

I doubt Sakmongkol would lower himself or waste time to `answer' the type of comment made by Gong, considering that this Dato' here is too much of an intellectual and of the cultured category. And especially to something made by mosquitoes...

But not so the rumbustious Mat Cendana...the man with the most authoritative blog review site on the planet! And he is simply attracted to the type as demonstrated by Anonymous Gong here - the "Mu tak khabar diri kho??" kind. This Gong here is obviously only of the "25 watts, lampu jamban" level... and Mat Cendana shouldn't lower himself or waste time too. But since he needs some recreation after being at the court earlier...

Okay Gong. BTW since you're too lazy to put a name for yourself, I'm invoking the unwritten law at blogs by calling you what I like. Hope you don't mind. Let's see what's the problem *with me* here:

If you have made an allegation, PROVE it... the ones about "lost it", "delusional". One thing that I loathe is the cowardly anonymous types who make condescending remarks towards the established and the named - something like the two-bit morons at Rocky's Bru who hurl abuses against Ahirudin Attan.

Now this one's laughable: In an attempt to `rebut' (haha!) Sakmongkol's contention that Khir Toyo had used underhanded tactics, Gong says "he had booed Khairy as well". At home, in front of the TV?? People DON'T do that even when watching *football matches* - curse, loud voice, making a vulgar sign etc; Yes, maybe. BUT NOT BOO. Or are you saying the programme was more exciting and stimulating than football?

By the way, check your grammar and spelling first, ya - You look silly.

Why did KJ say KT is doing everything possible to win the race. Everything under the radar.

What is actually happening in the race for KP?

And for Deputy President too. Only a few weeks left. Surely people will know roughly who is in the lead?

Anonymous,  26 February 2009 at 00:34

Geez... I never knew "Mat Cendana" is a breed of lap dogs. Barking for your master, doggy?

Yahooo! I'm *finally* getting abusive responses! This has taken a while, but they're finally here. No turning back now... until that charlatan from Permatang Pauh slithers back to his sewer and sinks.

So, Doggie: Out of speech,ya? Is this all that you can manage - I'll bet it took you two hours to come up with these couple of sentences! Haha!

... I can smell the stench of whose follower this is - and it's just one of the two-bit racist bigots going piggy-back with that Permatang Pauh liar; the equivalence of headless chickens running around:-)

Sorry dude, I'm OUT of your fake `Pakatan'... and I'll see to it that the PAS people pull out too - and leave that damned liar high and dry. You'll go down with him, Doggie - he'll pull all of you down with him.
