Sand for Bridge?

Last year, minister mentor of Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew visited Malaysia. He paid a visit to Kelantan’s Nik Aziz. He met up with Datin Sri Rosmah telling everyone that she and her husband our PM, run the country as partners. He also visited my state, Pahang.
In Pahang, he offered Pahang the technical and capital assistance for the state to dredge the Pahang River in Pekan. He said Singapore can do the job in return for sand. I was thinking, Singapore was willing to do the extensive dredging works in return for sand? Every grain of sand must be worth its weight in gold.
Sand.
What is the most precious commodity that Singapore wants? The firm answer is sand. This has been the bane of any agreement between Malaysia and Singapore. Dr Mahathir, when he was PM was adamant not to include sand as the lubricant to smoothen any agreement with Singapore. Singapore on the other hand, needs sand from Malaysia to increase its land mass. But by doing so, it will decrease the marine boundary it has with Malaysia. That was absolutely unacceptable to Malaysia and to Dr Mahathir.
In my mind then, the only cause that could explain the speed by which the agreement is concluded between Malaysia and Singapore is that sand has been included as an inducement to get Singapore to agree.  This could be a very strong reason that can explain the speed with which agreement with Singapore is reached.
So Syed Hamid isn’t going to be too unhappy about not getting the chairmanship of Tabung Haji. He has business in sand export to Singapore which is worth much more than the chairmanship of Tabung Haji.
Singapore on the other hand does everything with a winning mentality. If it can exact the harshest terms even from a traditional friend, it’s done in the name of business. It’s unlikely that Singapore is willing to agree with Malaysia if it doesn't acquire some valuable assets and concessions.  It’s always bottom line reasoning. Nothing personal.
Consider the sudden magnanimity of Singapore in lowering entry toll into the republic by 30%. Why was it done? Let’s play around with the possibilities. First, I am sure; it isn’t done in the name of charity. It’s done for a purpose.
The only purpose I could think at the moment is to encourage the gamblers in Malaysia to enter and play at their new casino. Singapore doesn’t want its citizens to gamble. It knows it’s bad for society. Singapore wants disciplined and focused citizens. It doesn't want broken homes on account of gambling. Malaysians, Indonesians – yes, they can come in droves and let them gamble and lose money in Singapore. Indeed, we (Singapore) can assist them by lowering our entry toll by 30%. Singaporeans, if they want to gamble, have to place a hefty deposit at the casino’s entrance.  That’s sufficient deterrent for Singaporeans.

So what could possibly cause the Singaporeans to have such a charitable frame of mind? It could only be sand.
The sale of sand must definitely feature in the agreement inked between PM Najib and BG Lee. The sale of sand to Singapore is attached to the bridge deal.
Malaysians are entitled to know whether any agreement concluded was contingent upon Singapore getting the sand it needs to do their land reclamation. In return they will agree to the building of the new bridge to Singapore. And the reclaimed land, which will be done on the Malaysian side of Singapore, will not only substantially increase the land area of Singapore; it will also reduce the sea area and push back the common boundary closer to Malaysia. This means part of Malaysia’s sea zone (or whatever you call it) will now become Singapore territory.
If agreement was reached in this manner, what Singapore has done is, do a Don Corleone on Malaysia- make Malaysia an offer it cannot refuse. Sand for bridge. Even dismantling the ancient causeway. The causeway isn’t going to be a threat to Singapore’s economy anyway. Its economy is not dependent on physical resources but the application of human capital on physical resources. If Malaysians get their hands on physical assets, it will be years before they can become competitors to Singapore.
So, give us the wretched sand, we give you the bridge you want. You don't even have to build a crooked one- do a straight one. We are ok with that. We just want your sand.

Now, here’s a vexing problem. The POA was thought of during Tun Mahathir’s time. Essentially whatever agreement is reached; it is reached covering the elements laid down in the POA. The POA was managed by Tun Daim Zainudin who had the blessings of the PM then and the cabinet. So it’s wrong to say, that Daim negotiated the POA elements without the approval of the PM or the cabinet. The 60:40 division indeed was a compromise to what Dr Mahathir wanted and Lee Kuan Yew insisted. Dr Mahathir wanted 70:30 while LKY wanted 50:50
Indeed if agreement on all outstanding issues is reached, we need to know the agreement on the use of our air space, the question of Malaysian’s CPF. It's not just bridge, water and KTM land. Sand wasn't part of the original equation. So, if the present agreement included sand as the sweetener, I am not sure how Tun Mahathir is going to see this.
Sure, we may say, Dr Mahathir is no longer PM and he is but a toothless tiger. But we must remember, the same toothless tiger was the one who expedited the inglorious exit of one Abdullah Badawi. Now, Pak Lah is spoken in terms of Abdullah who?
Should sand stand in the way of neighbourly relations? Should sand stand in the way of good business?

Don't be surprised the real reason why Najib signed away everything Singapore wanted - Singapore has damning photos of Najib wining & dining a Mongolian date, among other evidences!
Hey, you don't think their Intelligence service isn't efficient? Good luck Mr. Najib and whichever other politicians who think they can have a incognito quickie in nearby Singapore. Remember the Singaporeans are trained by Israelis and the Americans!Ha ha

32,000,000 mt, 3 km off Danga Bay. Sealed and signed, waiting to start dredging.

It is 100 ft deep, anyone can do the job to complete in 18 months, that is 60,000 MT a day.

Mad, is it?

Hello Dato,

I was just wondering, with your numerous critical and verbal bashing articles on the BN Government and especially on UMNO, whether your big boss from Pekan would not knock at your door at Pekan Lama or Sungei Pahang or where ever your residence is located.

Never never underestimate the intelligence and vengeful traits of Najib. He can be spiteful at times when his level of tolerance has reached its boiling point, even more so you are also an UMNO member from Pahang just next to his hometown.

He will send his feelers and minions to silence you or more graciously offer an executive position you can resist.

Is that your strategic plan that you want to be heard? Are you planning to be given a slot in the GLC. Or is it really coming straight from your heart with no holds barred, that you want TRUTH be told, no what happens?

Also the big fat mama will not let you continue with your barrage of articles in the blog. She also has her own cache of minions and 'pak pajaks' every ready to pounce on you and zip up your mouth.

I can intuit that the time will not be too distant when jibby and the big fat mama will pay you a courtesy call.

Let's see and will await for your response.

Dt Sakmongkol,
If the international boundaries along the straits have been ratified, in which I assumed it had, by the two nations, even the narrowing of two land masses would not have any effect or change on the boundary.
Singapore can practically landfilled it's waterborne.up to the ratified boundary if Malaysia or Indonesia does not mind.
It's just like two neighbours of bungalow lots, where one of them wilfully construct a wall right up to the edge of the boundary. Even if the other neighbour agree, that neighbour still have to deal with the local authorities on the various prevailing rules and enactments.
In the case of Singapore, it still has to adhere to certain International rules and regulations. Remember Malaysia succeeded in stopping Singapore in land reclamation somewhere opposite Pasir Gudang?

32 million tons..commission of about RM 5 per ton>>thats a cool RM 160 mil. in 18 months.

Put that in some safe invstment and goyang kaki with RM 160,000 per DAY income for ever n ever.

What a good life.Wish I had gone into politics..

And Dato Sak..if I am about to get my 160 mil..I won't allow anyone to throw sand in my bubur..either I shut him up nicely or badly.Anything that works.

The difference between Singapore and Malaysia is Singapore is govern by FIRST CLASS HONOURS graduates from global IVY LEAGUE University and Malaysia or Bolehland is govern by CROOKS. Please name any BUMI in government with FIRST CLASS HONOURS in Bolehland and name any invention done by BUMI that contribute to human society.

Will your former boss buy you over? Agreed that you know him very well, both of you having been in Pekan UMNO for a considerable period. But he also knows you and the price he must offer you to shut your (critical) mouth.
Betcha know some juicy details of our PM, too, and are holding these as your bargaining chip.

Do you think all UMNO members or those inclined to the party simply just follow whatever wrong their leaders doing/did/done ? .

Loyalty is to real party cause not submission to a persona of the any current leader. Total submission of only for Anwars followers who try any manner to reason even the wrong he did.

UMNO has proven with the pressure that caused Badawi early exit . Why dont you focus on Khalid/Azmin saga ?

I don’t think the lowering of toll by 30% is part of the equation.

Revision of toll charges at the causeway and the second link have always been the initiative of the Malaysian government, and Singapore simply follow suit to keep at par with the Malaysian side.

I am a frequent traveler to Singapore and have been through several toll increases. Singapore will automatically increase the toll with each Malaysian increase, taking into account the exchange rate. Only this time the pinch is less felt.

Salam Dato',
I got the eerie feeling that Mossad & our neighborly Lee & Co. have cooked up some irresistible Mongolian stews for our PM & Co... how can we counter this? Or is there no way out before the whole country is sold out?
This (blackmailing) skill is the typical game of highly qualified leaders (read: Ivy league educated)... they reserve their supposedly high density IQ gray matter for something else... just look at Wall Streeters' raping of the US/global economy; Bush & Blair, to justify the Iraq invasion... this is the downside of having too highly educated (read: out of touch with grassroots) leaders running a country/economy... I'm seeing this happening in our southerly neighbor too. Highly educated leaders (or people) don't seem to want to help their "lesser" neighbors... no, they are too busy enriching themselves to their graves!

dear dato,
shouldn't the bn govt be happy that sgp has provided the opportunity for hundreds of thousand malaysians to work there and remitting money back to m'sia? in fact the bn govt should sell more sand to sgp to expand so that it can take in more 'pendatangs', who are not 'welcomed' anyway. there will be less pressure on nep and definitely less anti-umno voters too. by selling sand umno cronies earn more and encourage more diaspora of pendatangs..win/win

Being an experienced man, I guess you know how the Chinese do business in Malaysia. Money.

Ask any housing developer, businessman or even a lorry driver how he would deal with a Malay civil servant or politician. Money.

"We are only afraid he will not take our money" is a common refrain among the Chinese.

Its strange to me how even someone like you - an insider a reasonable balanced view of UMNO do not understand Singapore and paranoid. Its not you don't have a point but its pushed to extreme.

Mahathir really did a good job on you people..

Dear superior race. If you're from that race of which I think you are, please grow up. Try procreate yourself and your fellow kinsman whereby one day your superior race will constitute more than 75% of the Malaysian population. After that you can change the constitution, get rid of the Art.152 or whatever, and hey, you not only can become PM, maybe a Rajah or the Agong. That' s democracy ain't it.
Otherwise...Rover.... SIT... ROLL OVER...PLAY DEAD.....!

Derebar 29 June 2010 at 10:25

Once we build the (crooked) bridge, LKY will start reclaiming the land facing JB. Then they will build all kinds of smoke or pollution emitting
industry right at Johor's doorstep. And we are the ones who supply the sand to allow them to reclaim their coastline. How smart can we be?

BTW Rosmah Mansor is the country's current co-PM. Nothing short of this!

Anonymous,  29 June 2010 at 12:16

JohorMali @ 29 June 2010 10:18,

Such a mind! Wonderful - pride comes before fall - without realising what's maruah bangsa!

A smart superior race will not syok-sendiri to display their wealth, their procreate majoritarian presence, & a perpetual dependency on tongkat.

Quality rules over quantity. No?

Look at this list;

• IPP for YTL, Ananda,Genting.
• Direct Nego double track rail for Gamuda.
• LDP,Kesas,Smart,HS Dam for Gamuda.
• Duke Hiway for Ekovest Group.
• PutraJaya Ring Road for IJM. PutraJaya JV land development,Abdullah Hukum,Johore Roadworks direct nego for SP Setia.
• Bandwidth for Ananda Satellite TV exclusivity for Ananda.
• KLCC devt for Ananda.
• West Port privatisation for Gnalingam.
• Casino license for Lim Goh Tong.
• 3 digits for Ananda.
• Sports Toto,Gaming license,Bukitt Tajar landfill for VT.
• Besraya,NPE Hiway & Seremban2 for roadbuilders.
• Silk hiway for Sunway.
• Khazanah rescue for Mines

What did they tell u?

If u r still a blur-sotong, let me enlighten u – u have been sold out by yr old kinds who work with the others to exploit u through & through!

Did yr kindred’s procreate majoritarian presence help u people? Oh, yes it did in yr understanding about 'demon-cracy' – for been a VERY convenient tool for socio-economical manipulation by yr very own selected cartel members of yr race.

Never mind about the superior numeral quantity that also put majority of yr people just barely above subsistence, both in education & living standard.

So eat yr heart out!

Now - Rover.... SIT... ROLL OVER...PLAY DEAD.....!

And NO treat for u, bad, bad boy!

We all know only too well the array of lethal weaponry PM Najib could use on our Dato' Sak as provided in the forms of ISA, OSA, Sedition Act, etc and doesn't Dato' Sak knows all too well the tools of their trade might include the spectrum from mercenary pretty boys/girls, IGP's very special forces to C4s etc.

I cannot but admire Dato' Sak in his taking up in no small measure such cudgels in his blogging for "amal maaruf and nahi mungkir".

Should he as you said would be bribed with that GLC position and after that we will not be witnessing any more 'whistle blowing', I would and will trust him together with the fervent doa May Allah SWT will guide and protect him, especially if 'buying' him fails, from any of the PM Najib's machinations involving any of the many indiscretion kinds he is widely alleged to be not above doing.

Anonymous,  29 June 2010 at 16:17

Dato'

For the first time, sand is more precious than bridge as far as Singapore is concerned.

Only sand can enlarge the territory of Singapore and Malaysia is a good neighbour to help.

Tun Mahathir will be furious, I guess.

Anonymous,  29 June 2010 at 16:41

Dato',
Well done on all your offering of advices to whomever consider it as advices...but I may be wrong - since your blogs was well read by many, how many advices do you think had been taken into consideration? Much awaiting in the darkest alleys...we are afraid that he actually do not consider anyone else(s) advices , except his wife...

I remembers on the same day he was announced as our PM, TV3 focused on his steps and his looks - I saw some "naughthy" grins (aka.aha...I got the job)...!.Oh no...? Nobody commented on that? Is that ok? Then, go on the ramblings Dato' for "amal maaruf nahi mungkar" - someone has to do THE JOB.

In a radio interview last year, she said dont give her places like Taman Negara where there are jungles and wild habitats.

Quiet Despair,

My life even when like yoyo up down , no prob i can survive... but when ppl like najib and rozy fall from power....it will happen to all...what they going to do???

maybe rozy will go marry a no3 husband (potential future PM) to replace mr. playboy no .2

Anak anak dari perkahwinan pertama tak pernah jeguk sejak kahwin najib. Apa punya perempuan ni (ibu ker)... ???

From Najib's wiki....In 1976 Najib married Tengku Puteri Zainah Tengku Eskandar ('Ku Yie') with whom he has three children: Mohd Nizar Najib (born 1978), Mohd Nazifuddin Najib and Puteri Norlisa Najib.

In 1987 he divorced Ku Yie and married Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor with whom he has two children: Mohd Norashman Najib and Nooryana Najwa Najib.

This is Rosmah's second marriage as well. She has two children from her previous marriage to a Bank executive from Perak.

Ex-hubby was a Shell manager. His name I cant disclosed. But if you read the book about her after the divorce, you will get the name.
The book was damaging to her.She asked her ex-hubby to clear her name.
I know the hubby. Good guy. Takes care of the kids.
Not only does she not recognised her kids, she did not allow Najib's kids with Tengku Puteri to be with their father.
Omigod what a woman.
Husband no 3 rich guy? I think with her kind of spending, only the Sultan of Brunei can afford her.

Dato,

You do yourself a disservice to your credibility when you mix inaccurate information with your opinions.

JohorMali is right. When two countries are so close to each other, the boundary is fixed through agreements. This cannot be changed by either party on their own whims and fancy. This extends to air-space as well.

Singapore fix their toll rates on whatever rate the Malaysian side charges. If Malaysia lowers the toll, they will follow suit. But unlike Malaysia, the toll charges in Singapore goes to the government, not a concessionaire. More important is that, they do not need to compensate anyone for lowering the toll or ask for an annual revision of the rates.

No hefty deposit is required for Singaporeans to visit the casino. They only need to pay a $100 day pass or $2000 annual pass to go into the casino. This same rule also applies to Singapore PRs, of which a substantial number are Malaysians.
