Raub: The MCA's Chosen One

Let me introduce you to the MCA candidate for parliament Raub.  He is going to be my opponent. He was at one time, Pahang MCA chief. The state chief is now Liow Tiong Lai.
I can’t tell you about him directly. It’s impossible to know what is inside a person’s heart. But I can tell you of his deeds so that the Chinese in Raub can judge him.
Under his watch, MCA made notorious history for losing the Tanah Rata state seat in Cameron Highlands to an independent.  The cause for the loss was inglorious enough. His chosen candidate was said to collect money from TOL land owners. The man was running a protection racket of sorts- pay up and the tenure of your land holding shall be extended. And who knows, if the payment is sufficiently high, the TOL land can even be converted into a permanent title. The state MCA chief then was the MB’s rep in land matters for Cameron Highlands.
The incumbent assemblyman for Tanah Rata before the 2008 elections was a person name Choong. A personable fellow, hardworking but aligned to the wrong MCA camp. It was unfortunate for him to have gotten into an automobile accident which left him hospitalised for a few months. He managed to recover and was able to continue offering his services to the people of Tanah Rata.
Unknown to him, the MCA state chief then, arranged to have medical reports certifying that the MCA incumbent state assemblymen wasn’t physically fit to hold office. The state chief, none other than the incoming MCA candidate for Raub Parliament, wanted to put up his own man to replace the incumbent.
The man chosen failed to deliver and he lost to an independent candidate. How can an MCA candidate lose to an independent? That could only be explained by the deeds of the state MCA chief and his proxy.
The operators of TOL land in Cameron Highlands were up in arms. The state MCA boss was the MB’s representative in land matters in Cameron Highlands. His proxy was entrusted with the task of collecting money from TOL land owners. As a result, his errand boy, incurred the wrath of TOL land holders who were forced to pay money to the state chief’s rep, the man slotted to replace the MCA incumbent then.
This is the man coming to Raub now.
But that is not all about the incoming MCA candidate. He is part of the axis of evil said to be masterminded by a former MCA leader who is charged in the PKFZ scandal.
What is that? That’s the RM12 billion port klang free trade zone which is a gigantic corruption scandal. Chong Kong Choy is pulling the strings to become the god father of MCA. His two partners in Pahang are the MCA candidate for Raub parliament and the Raub MCA division chief, one Dato Sri, despised by many in Raub. These 3 fellows form an axis of evil within the MCA to finally execute the inevitable ouster of the MCA’s porn actor and have him replaced by a totally powerless Liow Tiong Lay.
The objective of the axis of evil is to install Liow as the next puppet MCA leader while Chong Kong Choy plays the puppet master. Kong Choy needs a pliant and possibly dependent MCA president who will give protection over his involvement in the PKFZ financial scam. The MCA candidate for Raub is his instrument. He and the Dato Sri.
Mix them up together what do you have? You are having the choice to elect a person who operates along the lines of a secret society and the politics of the triads. We can’t have a person subscribing to these values as leader of the Chinese community. The Chinese community is not a triad society.
It was this style of politics that pitted the then MCA state chief against the crusading mission of a local Raub MCA leader. The local Raub MCA leader who went on to become state assemblyman for another part in Pahang battled against plans to structure the struggles of the MCA along the lines of a triad society.
Despite having won victories for MCA, the Raub native was finally dropped as candidate in 2008. Though he remains a MCA division chief, he is ostracised by the axis of evil. He was promised an exco position on many occasions, but the then state MCA chief and Chong Kong Choy reneged on the agreement and ditched the poor fellow.
The Chinese in Raub must now decide. Will they allow Chinese politics be dishonoured by structuring the struggles of the Chinese community along the lines of a triad society? Will they elect an instrument in the scheme of things planned by a puppet master trying to save himself from his involvement in the biggest financial scandal that has rocked this nation? Will they want to fall prey to a protection racket paying for extended tenures of their TOL Lands?

  1. Its bad enought that the whole nation is governed by corrupt minds who are greedy and not self-serving..and now adding to that flavour is a structure that is Triad looking? What is next? Al Capone style of Chicago politics?!

  2. Dato, most if not all of the leaders in the BN component parties are corrupt to the core. But the worse of these leaders are in the MCA.They have to go down on all fours and smell the asses of the Umnoputras to get a small piece of the pie.

Umno leaders get the biggest piece of the pie and thump their noses at the people, daring them to come and get them.Of course they can afford to thump their noses at the rakyat. With all the public institutions under their thumb, why not?

MCA?Do not talk about these useless mongrels. They are trained to be barking mongrels.Bark bark and always barking at the wrong tree. And what do they get in return from their political masters.Crumbs of leftover overnight discarded food.

These useless mongrels should not be given a second look. They should be sent to the doghouse for permanent residency. The MCA will surely get decimated pulling their political masters,Umno down with them.Good riddance to bad garbage.

  4. Dato, you said that your opponent for the Raub parliamentary seat is the former chairman of the Pahang Mca.And under his watch the Mca,the second largest political party after Umno lost to an independent.

Mca is a party rich of corrupted towkays in leadership and financial backers. And they have the cheek to lose to an independent.Maybe the independent was a candidate of Lee Lam Thye's calibre.Or else this guy must be more than a sleepyhead,a real circus clown.

If he is what he is said to be,my best guess is that he better back down as a candidate,or risk losing his deposit. Then take the deposit money,go to charity organisations and gave the money away.At least he will be doing a good deed, then maybe he will be forgiven for his past mistakes.

  8. Behaving like Triads while in office or the use of Triads to muscle their way during Election time has always been simmering beneath the official MCA - the chair-throwing and fist fights during MCA General Assembly were just the visible part of this towkay mind-set. Remember most of these guys are really not that well-educated. Their simple claim to be accepted as leaders is the money they have accumulated, most of it, not all, from shady or highly questionable tactics - the so-called killer instincts.

This is the season for layabouts and thugs in smelly jeans and polo-neck shirts to make some good money from known 'gentlemen' thugs in lounge suits.

Your account is so believable because this is also what is happening in UMNO and MIC, and I have just learned also in SUPP, PBRS and PRS in Sarawak - the cancer is spreading.

From TAR college to UTAR.So many top students have been graduating year after year from MCA's top institution of higher learning.Where have all these top graduates gone to.

Have thes graduates snubbed and shunned the MCA,a political party who help many students to afford a higher education of learning. These graduates must be so smart as to avoid the MCA like a plague. And to deprieve the MCA of good candidates that they have no choice but to field a loser.Go figure.

  12. Dear Sakmongkol

In a place like Raub, PKFZ, however dirty it might be, is far from the residents mind. But I do suspect the Raub Gold Mine that is polluting their air and water with cyanide would be an issue front and centre. Chinese education, too, is a key issue in rural Malaysia.

Raub Chinese like other semi-rural Chinese are self-reliant. They don’t depend on the government much, so issues like corruption in high places or racism or religious intolerance means little to them.

But they need to have access to the MP and state assemblyman because nasty things like the cyanide affair will crop up now and then and they need someone to solve their problem, something Ng Yen Yen didn’t do. Raub was her Waterloo, not Penang. That’s why she was dropped.

If you can empathize with them on this key issue and promise to solve it (assuming you can) it would help your campaign immensely. These are reasonable and practical folks.

  25. Someone once cynically commented that small town MCA politics would put to shame Byzantine politicians of old especially when some of the key players are ex-thugs trying to reform through courtship with a BN partner or just plain ahlongs with interests in localised illegal 4-digit lottery racket, massage-parlours now reflexology centres (both crudely labelled as bonking shops), unrepentant taikohs of triads, strong arm tow-truck operators, debt-collectors, etc.

You are right - the Chinese in and around Raub have a simple choice: retain the triad society-like organisation for local Chinese politics as structured by selfish local oligarchs (read reformed or unreformed thugs), or, opt for real change for a free united and transparent Malaysia led by decent, trustworthy and honest politicians.

As we prepare to face the onslaught from a party with limitless financial resources, do ponder over this, taken from another blogger with regard to the definition of a valid vote.

"Do Malaysians a favour by getting the Election Commission to declare explicitly what constitutes a valid vote.

There is a rumour flying that a mere pencil dot in a box can make the vote valid. So if we extend the logic, a BN-friendly polling officer puts an almost imperceptible dot in the BN candidate’s box, two scenarios can happen: 1) a cross mark on a BN candidate will confirm the vote as going to BN, or 2) a cross mark in a PR candidate’s box will automatically be considered invalid/spoilt because it has been defaced by the dot mark in the BN box."

  30. B: 'I was just thinking...'

M: 'You can think meh? Oi, here i am the taikor. I think, you follow. Paham, tak?!'

    B: 'If you say so..'

M: 'Indeed, i say so. I am the one who took the initiative. Raised capital in London. Built a gold processing plant here. Brought life to this sleepy town. Gave hope to the folks. Yet those bloody ingrates make noise. What more they want? '

B: 'Better health for the folks, less profit for the culprits?'

M: 'Look, there's nothing wrong. The department has approved the process.'

    B: 'Like Lynas?'

M: 'Eh, everything has a price. You want development, take-lah some risk. How you think any business ever grew? Just pluck rambutans, ke?'

B: 'If you really care for the people here like how the people really cared for their safety around the Lynas site, you would have changed the process. Don't use cyanide. It's one of the deadliest poisons in the world. It's not that you haven't seen its effects so far. Today it might be rashes. Will your children like what they will see later what their father has really left behind?'

M: 'Oi, don't try to psycho me.'

B: 'Oh, did i just prick a conscience or is it still greed layered on mortal fear?

Look at the folks. Not just in Raub, you know. Everywhere. The profile of the small town of Malaysia has not changed in the last umpteen years. What all those economic transformations talked about in the big city have no impact at all in places like this.

Isn't it long overdue that there be a proper nation-wide plan to uplift places like Raub and others? Something coordinated and integrated. Not the leave-it-to-taikor's blackmailing wash outs. Blackmail own citizens, report in fear back to Umno.'

M: 'Look, ini Malay-siannn, you tahu tak? I am MCA, my plant director is Umno local chief. My shareholders are blue blood's. You get the drift, man?'

B: 'You mean triad or tripartite?

There are plenty of other safer cottage industries which can be resettled here to uplift the folks. And it all can be done in such a way as to attract not just tourists but also new investors.

Raub, Mentakab, Bentong and others can be the connecting hubs for a new geometry of industries in the state.

You know, our Pahang is a big state with ample resources but needy folks.

At the end of the day, it's how we exercise our intelligence in concert with our conscience.

And that's what missing in you. You're just a black-hearted calculating opportunist looking for excuses to overlook threats to public health. Is that how you want your father to remember you?

Let me tell you what's wrong. The folks of Raub are a microcosm of the folks in the rural towns of this nation.

They have been neglected and the only time they get some attention is when they complain about projects set up in their places which deliver indifferent results and cause them misery.

When all that happens, the government machinery comes in with the media and tries to soothe and soften away the problem. In effect, bury it.

But can you bury cyanide forever, for instance? Like radioactive waste, it doesn't degrade easily. Moreover it's ligative. It binds itself pathologically with dreadful results on living things.'

M: 'Wahh, now you pakar kimia, ke?'

    ReplyDelete
  31. 2/2

    B: 'Erhhh, never mind.

Let's take the economic issue instead. People living in the big cities are facing tremendous cost problems. They cannot afford to own their own homes. To commute to work which often is far away, they can't depend on the public transport system. So they take a loan to buy a small car.

Now if your Barisan is returned after the election, it will take the result to raise all sorts of taxes. Otherwise all this election spending and the overwhelming deficit will finish off not just the economies in the cities but also those in the rural areas.

The result even you with your charmed lifestyle can easily envisage. More and more people will fall into the low income groups and the only way Barisan can hide that is to shift the goal post again that defines who are poor so that it can continue with its black lie about reaching high income status.

By taking care of the economies of the rural towns like Raub, price and inflation pressures can be diffused because the rakyat who live in such places will not need to move to the cities in order to build their family futures.

You get to develop the lives of the rural folks, take off pressure from the city folks, and redistribute wealth creation across the land, especially to areas which have been neglected by Barisan cronies (whispers.."like you")'

M: 'Wahh, where you learn to think like that?'

B: 'Oh? from my brother taikor over there, of course!'

M: '(turns around, sees a Malay gentleman). You mean him? I haven't seen him around here before. Who's he?'

B: 'One of the finest and most conscientious Malay minds in this country.

Let me tell you what has changed in this land, M.

What has changed is the shift away from race to rakyat.

Let me ask you, should it matter if it is a Malay MP who helps up the Chinese, or a Chinese MP who helps up our Malays?

The problems the rakyat face are not problems of race but problems of principles.

Get that into your thick skull. But i forget, it has been shrunken by race politics. And you want to tar the DAP and its representative here?

But i forget again, wasn't it the MCA which is spreading the rumour he owns the plant? That's a stupid lie and bad mischief, no? Check the background of the company on the internet.

So what will voters now think? They have been voting in the past for the MCA whose member caused the danger to them and it is now the same MCA which is instead putting the blame on someone who is trying to defend and help them out?

New face or not, Malay or otherwise, it doesn't matter. What matters is principled government and good men. Our Raub folks should consider it a privilege to have Ariff Sabri represent them. What say you, now, M?'

M: 'How much to buy your silence?'

    B: 'Priceless.'

  33. Dear Sakmongkol

I last visited Raub a long time ago during a general election campaign. The MCA man won. He wasn’t a local boy but was parachuted in by MCA HQ. This proved that the local boy does not have an insurmountable advantage. But victory requires a lot of hard work and the cooperation of the local DAP, PKR and PAS campaigners.

I remember the Rest House on a small hill. I also remember visiting the small Malay kampongs and doing the ronggeng as part of the routine. But I intend to visit Raub again, this time to see how the DAP might fare against MCA. I was hoping that Ng Yen Yen would stand and fight. Alas, like her boss, she isn’t winnable. The Raub Gold Mine cyanide fiasco did her in. Why wasn’t she able to do anything? Was she hard-hearted or were there powerful forces protected by royalty that prevented her from doing much, like Lynas, which some say had royalty backing?

This cyanide issue can provide you with some political fodder. Your opponent Ho Khai Mun was an Exco member. Could he have done anything? And why not? A friend said to me that being a local boy HKM has some advantage because everyone knows him, even the Malays, because he attends weddings and funerals. In places like Raub they expect their state assemblyman or MP to do that. Ho was Bilut ADUN, but Raub isn’t very far from Bentong. My friend asked: will Ariff Sabri have time to go around for people to see him and shake his hand? And what might he say to them to make them choose him over the local boy that they know?

One thing you can tell them is that the MCA is finished. Even their chief is not winnable. The MCA has subcontracted their work to UMNO. Ceding? Remember the Sulu Sultan who ceded Sabah? He never got it back. So tell the Raub folks to vote for change. DAP will fight for the Chinese and for all Malaysians. LGE has promised to close Lynas should PR win. If so, then Raub Gold mine can also close if they continue using cyanide.

I hope the curry fish head in Raub town would be worth the drive there.
