The Corrupting use of Anonymity

The use of anonymity has allowed unscrupulous shadowy operators with much ease, disseminate so many lies to the public through cyber-journalists. Sometimes, it is the cyber-journalists themselves who perpetrate the lies. The interest of the public at large is further short-changed when cyber-journalist themselves want anonymity. I am sure the 'sources' often quoted by cyber-journalists always begin their conversation with the comforting words- these are off the records yes?

We must also be aware that the process of brain-washing the public starts with off-the-record briefings for cyber- newspapermen. If they are then repeated by cyber-journalists who insist they want to remain comfortingly anonymous, then the lies and manipulations and deceptions are expanded to the nth degree.

I'm singling out Mamak Bendahara and Parpu Kari here.  If they have balls they will come to see me on the 9th of May with convener Nightcaller at the appointed place. Both of them can repeat in person what they have stated in their comments to my face. Maybe to some people, hurling abusive language and expletives is second nature to them. Where I come from, children who do that will have their mouths smeared with chili padi. I am also calling this Pasquale to meet up and say what he said directly to my face.

This is how beltway journalism largely functions.  Hidden agenda seekers are routinely allowed to speak to the public while hiding behind journalist-granted anonymity. Our central objection:   by granting anonymity to these people including to the cyber-reporters, we are able to justify without challenge why certain people did what they did. We allow these people (sources and reporters) to spout utter nonsense, filled with internally contradictory and incoherent claims, without any accountability whatsoever.

Come again, how is this achievable? It becomes possible because we allow them, with zero journalistic justification -- to hide behind a wall of anonymity when making their case.  Whereas its use, is squarely at odds with the rules which journalists claim to affirm regarding the real use of anonymity which I have mentioned above.

Accordingly when we surveyed the abuse of anonymity during these last few years, we can also, in the spirit of what Rocky just did, issue a set of guidelines for when it is appropriate (and inappropriate) to use it. These include:

  1. Don't assume anything cyber-journalists tell you is true. In fact, we are probably better off assuming anything they tell you is a lie.
  2. Don't print anonymous assertions. Demand that sources make themselves accountable for what they insist is true. As a mark of integrity, cyber-reporters must refuse the use of anonymity.
  3. Offer the greatest and most guaranteed degree of confidentiality to whistleblowers offering information that contradicts the official position. Your stand is probably truer.
  4. don't offer any confidentiality to official spinners

To some people then, anonymity confers a license to disparage and abuse any one without shouldering responsibility. I say some people because I can understand the importance of retaining anonymity by some bloggers. That would include those who Rocky mentioned.

I may have misinterpreted Voice's boisterous and garrulous personality as being suggestive of permissiveness but never expected that misinterpretation to be used in such venomous manner by others. I can respect a blogger's wish to remain anonymous and will adhere to his/her wish. As an example I know the identity of many bloggers as they have conversed with me on the internet. They way they conduct themselves do not allow me to read suggestions of permissiveness and I respect that. That would include those who have disparaged me personally.

But I can't the say that for many bloggers who misuse the concept of anonymity. They employ it for twisted ends. It's done in the name of a higher cause and it is best served through anonymity. That is funny- we want transparency and indeed fight for it, but do so with such opaqueness.

It is just a big lie perpetrated with the use of the most undemocratic journalistic tool- the use of anonymity. While pretending to offer a journalistically sound, balanced take on the burning issues of the time, what they are actually doing is to deliberately churn out rank propaganda, drooling hagiographies of those they like, demonizing those they don't like, in order to secure for themselves future career-advancing benefits. How do they achieve that? They do so by becoming a favored message-carrier for the royal court at Putrajaya. Here is the upshot of my arguments:-

  1. We do not grant anonymity to people who are engaged in speculation, unless the very act of speculating is newsworthy and can be clearly labeled for what it is.
  2. We do not grant anonymity to people who use it as cover for a personal or partisan attack
  3. Anonymity should not be invoked for a trivial comment, or to make an unremarkable comment appear portentous.

  1. Ah, given your "undang-undang", there will be no freedom of speech in Malaysia.

Your master have harassed me before; your attempt can be seen as a trap, you're luring all the Pro-Mahathir bloggers into a spot, and later your will expose their identity when your master sees fit. Your master can also dig up on them and threaten them, especially if they are working with government agencies.

Sakmongkol, you got no integrity any more. Bising macam tin kosong. pergi main jauh2

    Bertaubatlah.

  6. Dato

It's good of you to try and establish some guidelines on cyber journalism. Hopefully many would follow. Only God knows the kinds of cyber journalism we have now in blogosphere.

You have been given interviews by the non-populist Tun Daim and the discerning Tengku Razaleigh. That tells your level. The substance of what you write and your command of English generally surpasses others'.

Many of the others can't even write proper English, let alone good English. I hope you don't bring yourself down to their level. You are a Dato and a former Wakil Rakyat. I urge you to put aside the wanting to meet in person and uttering into faces those who have said unpalatable words on the screen. Your thinking readers can judge for themselves the validity of the accusations made by the others.

I think many of us who find your views interesting and keenly follow your posts would prefer that you concentrate on putting out constructive views and not spend time on those critics many of whom would continue to hide behind anonimity anyway.

Hell, I could be a 15 year old bored kid suffering from some hangover, and Parpu could be a 12 year old fighting for UMNO after reading some HISTORY.

Anonymity is a really odd thing..might turn out surprising. Wenger could be an American working in the embassy and SUKJ could be someone from the Pusat Serenti.

Husin Lempoyang is an English diplomat who majored in the Malay Language, and his blog is just to test the Malaysian Social Climate.

  39. Dato Sak,

I have always enjoyed your incisive analyses and insighful views. But it saddens me that you feel the need to take on and prolong this unfruitful argument. Granted, you need to assert your views and defend your space. We know those without any sense of fairness and ethics often hide behind a cloak of anonymity and sling shots that hurt deeply. They do not deserve the privilege, but in Cyberspace free speech rules. In the end we decide what are the nature and parameters of the said privilege. People like Parpu Kari frothing with expletives and squealing with glee while hurling personal attacks probably feel that such are within parameters of free speech. In the process for all the world to see, they define and underscore their lack of class. Perhaps a slight failure in upbringing...but why blame the parents!

Those more discernng know better than to waste their time giving credence to the likes of Parpu Kari. And good upbringing restrains one from engaging in tit-for-tat, I am sure.

However, I am not sure if Rocky thinks hosting the likes of Parpu is done in the light and spirit of respecting free speech. I'd probably want to establish some kind of mechanism now if my platform is fast becoming an arena for expletives and personal attacks. A reminder or two before disconnecting should be a good remedy for such behaviour characterised by uncouth and disrespectful tendencies. General decency is all we ask.

I have Rocky's Bru on bookmark, and because of this 'Anonymity Debate' I have surfed Parpu's blog and the others mentioned. They don't leave a good taste in the mouth. Again in exercising my freedom of choice, I can choose not go there. Perhaps these sites have tremendous followings. To each his own.

Cowards do seek validation even if through means silly. What they don't have, they claim through self delusion. So, let it be. They'll die a natural death. Sadly misguided they seriously think that they are championing the greater purpose of their beloved party. They are definitely not; and certainly NOT the kind with whom we want to identify as flagbearers of Malaysia's future.

Kita Turun, Kita lawan. (Sucky will will digress and say "oh, no, I wanted to meet to hug and kiss"...gay...)

"I want to meet you because I want to hear it from your mouth" is not enough of an excuse to force 2 bloggers to "turun padang", sucky.

  42. I support BC's views, except his words "tremendous followings" of Rocky's or Parpu's blogs. One cursory glance didn't give me that impression.

With the kind of things Parpu says in blogs like this, why should we bother about him and his following? And so-called Dato Bendahara talking the way he does above. Not worth the read. A waste of time. Cluttering the blog. Irritating sensible readers. And unnecessarily giving them attention. Just disregard them and the likes of them.
