Thinking Leadership

One day a friend of mine met with the late King Ghaz, the elder statesman said.
Young man, will you nominate me as the Ketua Pemuda?
My friend let out a howl of laughter.
Mana boleh Tun, you walk pun dengan tongkat, kaki pun dah tak daya. Hishamudin( then Ketua Pemuda) muda dan kuat.
Young man, said King Ghaz- I will lead using my head, not my legs.
This is exactly the chief malady crippling UMNO- the dearth of a thinking leadership.
Think of the difference between first generation and the present and succeeding generations.
What did the first generation of Malayan citizens think of? They were basically thinking of how to rid of the colonialist yolk. They fought for independence. Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak and first generation leaders fought for displacing the colonial government. They had this external stimulus that brought out the best in them. In the course of ridding their society of the yoke of colonialism, men with leadership emerged naturally. You had many of them.
They got into politics. Politics to them was a means through which they could achieve an objective. Politics was a purposeful activity. Nowadays- people 'play' politics just to stay in power.
The second generation is different. In many aspects. This is our generation, and our successors'. They knew not very much about the ideals and motivation of the first. They have vague memory on this. Some may no longer know who Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Razak were. King Ghaz was almost forgotten and remembered only when he died last week. He has written a few books which I think many have not heard of. The man, who took over from him as Kuala Lipis UMNO division the last time, did not even know  where he lived. You know, UMNO leadership can be so hypocritical most of the times- they don't know how to treat previous leaders. They are full of crap sometimes.
This generation knows not of past struggles and the object of previous struggles- displacing colonial powers. They now know of these- poverty (rural or urban), ignorance, ineptitude, corruption and bad governance. These issues are more relevant to them.
So what kind of leadership is required first and foremost? It's the leadership that governs using their heads and not the legs. You need this kind of leadership that tackles poverty, bad governance, corruption and so forth.

It's easy to go to the dark side of the force. Umno displaced the brits and in turn becomes the new brits of this country. Umno, second-generation colonialists.

This happens when one thing crumbles. Conscience.

When conscience goes, even one's business partners get sidelined. The business then collapses too. That's Barisan today.

The finest measure of a man is when he is completely down. Then he will have to draw his innermost reserves which will finally show what he is.

So too political parties. The important measure for Umno is not when it is the incumbent. But when it is the opposition.

What has Umno done as the opposition in those states which really help all the peoples instead of punishing them for its own inadequacies?

Honest answer, please.

A short post, but only because using just the spinal cord to bang it out.

Dear Dato',
I was meeting some Thai businessmen recently and was talking to them on economic matters. They never blamed speculators and accepted the fact that there was a huge asset bubble that imploded.

Contrast this to what is being sold in the history books here. Leaders cannot think because they are forced to believe in lies. The single most important economic event in our nation is wrapped in lies by the master liar so that a distorted picture of reality is being painted.

Why blame the leaders of UMNO? They may be out of touch because they cannot understand this chasm between reality and fiction. Apart from North Korea and perhaps China, such use of state propaganda on a grand scale is almost unheard off. One gets worried when the leaders themselves are the only ones believing this propaganda.

I have done my part for the nation by confronting the source of all this lies in his blog. I salute him for not adopting the cowardly tactics of bloggers under his "naugan" who either censor or ban people from their blogs.

Lets see his response.

The kind of thinking leadership you and all of us are looking for does not exist in the current UMNO set up. It is too tainted by corruption and indoctrinated in Dr.M's brand of racism to rise above narrow personal interests. 1M'sia call by PM Najib is no more than an APCO PR bleat.

And Wenger is right. The 1998/99 currency crisis debacle was more due to the mismatch between Dr.M's lomg term grandiose 'white elephant' projects and short term funding plans than "currency speculators". That Soros succeeded is elequent testimony our economy was then built over a foundation of straw which goes back to Dr.M's pathetic performance and lack of understanding of his own shortcomings. That man will tell any lie to assure his name in the history books is not blackened!

Dear Dato,

Spot on and well said about the new generation leaders.

What worries me is how about the 3rd generation leaders. Are they will come from the same bloodline from 1st and 2nd Generations leaders but spend most of their young and adult life in international schools and overseas. Not that I against it but wonder how they can really see and fight like our independent fathers that envisioned the country to fight for "nusa dan bangsa".

I am not holding my breath.

And who by brave assent, who by accident,
who in solitude, who in this mirror,
who by his lady's command, who by his own hand,
who in mortal chains, who in power,
and who shall I say is calling?

Dato,

Chinaman have one saying, "wan lan kin chan ching" translated roughly say in adversity one finds true character. Our forefathers fought for principles, these are men who lead through their ideals. These are men who took the mantel of leadership through the sheer strength of their conviction. Men who sailed chartered waters to give us our beloved Malaysia.

Today, our line up of BN so called leaders comprises men of loose morality and self serving intentions. Look at MCA, you hv a porn star angan angan nak jadi president, brutus, weeping crook and a free loading chinaman all in one leadership line-up. This would have been a shakespearean epic if the old bard was still around. No wonder they say my grandmother came to malaysia to whore herself.

MIC, no nd to say la, leave them alone, they will find a way to kill one another. Belum makkal sudah mau sakti.

Malaysia, has forgotten its roots, we are pampered by the wealth of our nation, we have all forgotten the good a little toil does for the soul. We are fast becoming Nigeria, the rot starts from the top semua mau cepat kaya, in America u hv the american dream, that hard work and toil will bear it fruit irregardless of race color or creed. In Bolehland, we have the BN wet dream, if ur dim, lazy and happens to be someone's son, a life of leisure and the bounties of the country awaits your pillage. Hell, you may even get to be the PM.
