Saving UMNO


You have to do two things:-



  • Replicate as much as possible the idealism driven climate of first generation leaders and



  • Put in place a system (not absolutely perfect , we know) that cultivates and seeks out capable and good leaders.
Our PM doesn't have the equivalent of Tun Razak's king Ghaz, orTun Razak's Tengku Razaleigh. He didn't have Tun Razak's Sardon Jubir for example who had the appearance of a pugilist ready to let go at any time. He doesn't have a Mahathir's Daim Zainudin or Mahathir's Sanusi. He has one minister whose outbursts are faster than Wyatt Earp's draw, an Easy Rider Minister who rides the big bikes living out some missing part of his adolescent life. He has a siren of an Information Minister. These are the qualities he has with which to champion his many agendas? Ayoyo!
Our PM may not even have a Tun Razak's Tun Dr. Ismail. Muhyidin was capable only of coming out with an uninspiring dismissive of Perkasa. The point is what is UMNO going to show the Malays that it can take the upper hand and become a better champion than Perkasa? Certainly not through giving out mere statements and claims. I think we have had enough of this hot air.
He has so many diffident ministers unsure and reluctant to exercise leadership. You have a minister in charge of religious matters deferring decision waiting signals from a PM not schooled in Islamic knowledge. You have a second finance minister who is afraid to assert given authority. A de facto 2nd finance minister who heads the EPU is calling the shots. 

First and foremost it's a leadership issue. Let's leave the issue until later.

Other than leadership, UMNO is suffering from diminished credibility- that element which caused rejection by over 1 million of its members and over 3 million of Malay voters.
The immediate way for UMNO to make itself believable again and regain people's trust is to achieve a huge success at something immediately. That would inspire confidence and trust. This plus do something for long term and strategic importance which is cultivating leadership.
In a previous article, I have talked about the necessity of restructuring leadership structure or leadership structural components at branch levels. That's the technical part of it. The technicians can reconfigure that leadership structure. That does not ensure and guarantee the emergence of leadership. That would still depend on the intrinsic leadership values of the person chosen or elected. We shall talk about that later too.
What's of immediate significance is the loss of credibility. Credibility comes in many approximating forms- trustworthiness, reliability, integrity, authority, standing and even the indefinable sincerity. When the PM handed RM500, 000 to the church that was torched, that action may indeed be genuine sincerity but it is still disputed by distrusting minds with political axes to grind. As such it's indefinable but not absolutely worthless. The PM's 40 advisers should be writing on this instead of smirking with satisfaction and patting themselves on the backs.
But like I said, those are approximating forms- still open ended. The PM needs to offer tangible results. Right now, the PM needs to find an immediate project of social, political and economic value that immediately establishes UMNO and the government's believability.
The PM has come out with certain priorities- tackling urban poverty for example, ridding our politics of corruption for example, making UMNO a truly democratic party and all those.
Example: corruption. What are the desirable tangible results? Bringing to book the big fish? Of course. Ministers ke, deputy ministers ke, powerful financial bankroller ke. Make examples of them. Show the rakyat you mean business.
PM shouldn't shy away in showing his seriousness in dealing with this scourge. He must be willing to make sacrifices- meaning he must have that leadership mettle and iron resolve to see big names universally suspected of corruption to be charged. As an example simpliciter- is there any fundamental reason not to haul in Khir Toyo for example? That diminutive former dentist can make a home more expensive than Tun Mahathir's? He is a Croesus or what?
Or to haul in the big names behind the PKFZ scandal. This financial mess is man-made. So far we have seen minions charged, but where are the big kahunas? UMNO and the government become disbelievable when they refuse or are seen as foot dragging when it comes to who the public perceives are corrupt. What the public wants, the public must get. That should make PM, his party and government believable.
What is another topical issue that can immediately elevate UMNO's integrity? By acting bona fide in dealing with the oil royalty issue. If the state of Kelantan rightfully deserves to get the oil royalty, restore that right to receive royalty. The PM loses believability trying to do a shuffle in distorting terms here and there. Wang ehsan means simply what the term means- something given out of the goodness of the heart-now that's different from a right. Goodness of the heart is personal to holder, while a right is claimable against the whole world. If the federal government wants to give ehsan money to Kelantan- take it because that acceptance honours the goodness of the heart of the giver. But that doesn't cancel out the right to which the state is entitled to. Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah yesterday spoke to a very large crowd about this issue.

How does UMNO respond to that? By braying for blood even asking for his expulsion from UMNO. These kichi mayungs better don't waste our time by loud noises. The people who should be answering what Tengku Razaleigh said is DR Mahathir. Only TDM has the stature to debate on what TRH said. 
Out of nowhere comes our Information 'Change Mode' Minister. Can you trust our Information Minister who was once hanging by the financial coattails of Tengku Razaleigh when he was with Semangat 46? Even his deposit to contest elections then was paid for by Tengku Razaleigh. Rais is rust. Like Negeri Sembilan people say- MULO DAH DIO NAIK JOBO TU!
Restore that right and give wang ehsan at the same time- that makes The PM, his party and his government believable. We will believe what you say.

Dear writer,

IMHO, the guns of umno's known whats the problem with their party. They understand very well of how corrupted it is (to the core). Nothing get moves without cash changing hand. Pay first talk later. How could they not know that when they themself are there due to how much cash is handed over? The President will not be able to respond, if he act tough he will be out of the office sooner.

IMHO, get UMNO out of power for 1-2 terms, starve them of cash and power, let the leaders who depended on cash die off and newer cleaner and leaner leader emerge and win the heart of the Malays. Its much honorable then tweaking here and there and the result is still the same. God blessed Malaysia.

In all probability, it will taken a monumental defeat in a by election or a state election to jolt this listless administration into action.

And we have yet to even dissect the economic headwinds that are present. Furthermore, nobody knows what the outcome will be on the subsidy front, a single event that could sink the Government if handled in a non-strategic manner. Note to all:
Telling people that u know the Govt spends RM 24 billion a year on subsidies aint going to cut any ice. The idea of linking the subsidy to the car engine .cc will not work if the V6 which is 2,000 cc gets "upgraded" to the more expensive category. There is a much better and more effective way that really can kill 2 birds with one stone, but since the PM hired the white boys for this, let them earn their moneys.

Any chance for a January in Review posting from yourself Dato?

Dato,

You said that certain ministers in the BN govt are "reluctant to exercise leadership". How can they do so when they do not have the leadership quality in the first place?

The PM is surrounded by a Cabinet full of human-looking animals with pea-sized brain.

That is why they have no intellect (kosong dah)to make swift and informed decision. They are just spewing verbal diarrhea which contractdicts each other.

You mentioned Rais....he is an idiot...you should see how he jeling mata kat a journa. Memang kurang ajar, Rais Orphan tu.

Look at Ku Li...he is so well-respected. He is fair and exudes charisma and leadership quality. Ku Li is the only leader left in UMNO who can lead this Nation to prosperity and harmony.

Najib is leading towards a tong najis. He is supporting cow heads to boar heads.....cheap attempts at stirring racial disharmony. Even Marina Mahathir said that in her blog.

You have given advice to those human-looking animals in UMNO/BN several times. Have they heeded your advice?

You should be the Education Minister and be the catalyst to give BN/UMNO a long overdue shake-up.

Look at the DPM....he looks sickly...anytime, he could be suffering from a heart-attack....it is written on his face.

I am a Malay and I am already very fed up with the BN government. My children are suffering from the poor education standards and system. As a dad, my wife and I don't feel safe without accompanying them to wherever they are going.

We are prisoners in our own country. Time for me to get out of this unsafe country.

Do you feel safe ? Do your children feel safe?

Yes Dato' you sure have given PM Najib something to be already chewing on. If he had known just half of what you have listed and he still had'nt started on anything, then he is THE PROBLEM, surely!

Perhaps, he has much to say about his own integrity to be believable in whatever course of strategies and actions that he must wield the big stick. That he couldn't and the lot of them are feeling safe and very sure he wouldn't is the PROBLEM that UMNO must come to grip with to save itself.

Many like you perhaps already believe UMNO cannot and will not do so and that this must surely seal its end.

In my dream, Najib would be inviting KuLi over to a TV program, and have the fuel royalties explained as clear as possible. And as most probably would have guessed it right, KuLi would support Kelantan's claim for royalty paymet. And Najib would then announced in the paper the following day of accepting KuLi's suggestion.

In the end, Kelantan will still be *owned* by PAS no matter what, and Najib's action will probably strengthen PAS further in Kelantan. But BN, will indoubtedly regain better image and probably score better in the next GE. Just do things right, dont worry too much about your chair and supporters (which need to be fed). DO THE RIGHT THINGS, EVEN YOUR FOE WILL RESPECT YOU.

I really think that PAS is a *honest* political party, and if BN can show enough sincerity, there is a good chance they can merge or at least have PAS be injected into BN.

PKR is too young, and I really think there are lots of incognitos in the party. And also, some of them are not really honest ie they joined PKR because they couldn't climb the ladder in UMNO. Instantly, they are branch leaders for an example. And these people don't really have good leadership quality - a one eye man is a leader of the blinds.

However, the point is PAS is a credible party, and the only things left are to have strong leader (like Fadzil Noor not Ustaz Abdul Hadi - sorry). A good ulama' doesn't necessarily translate into a good leader, I think most people can attest to that.

1.Ex Minister staying in an exclusive (expensive)area..huge bungalow built over two adjacent plots.And not too shy to flaunt it on TV.
2.Terengganu Exco driving Mercedes EVEN THO PM hv told them (and publicly reported in the papers)NOT to use the vehicles.
3.Halal Certifications that leaves many patrons confused...is it the green one or the black one?Who is authorised to issue?What is HDC doing?
4.MAS loses money and the CEO gets promoted and tasked to manage the countries transformation program.Clearly,planning skills and showboating and actual hard nosed execution are MILES apart.
5.GLC plods on without purpose or vision.And PM have neither boosted their capabilities nor prod them to the right direction.
6.RM 18 billion spending allocated for the GTP..but the real issues and problems remain out of focus.
7.Success measured by how creative the "sloganeering and PR exercises" and the noise generation factor..NGF

I hope I m wrong..and come June 2010..the real and positive impact of PM's programs will be realised.Its just that it seems so long ago since Pak Lah was doing the sloganeering..and yet we are still bombarded by new slogans...

Hartal in 1947 by the Malayan citizens (Malays, Chinese, Indians, etc together) then, against the Colonial Administration's exploitation & abuse of power....

Was a Peaceful Protest of Disobedience that produced results - Relevant to the situations then !

The British educated & trained Intellectuals, Professionals, Economists, etc (Oxford, Cambridge, etc).

- In 1957 FINALLY gained our Independence from the "Colonial British Rulers" through the citizen's "concerted" struggle & the Leadership of our Bapa Merdeka Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his 1st Malayan cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Westminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law in 1957,

That was the old UMNO (led by Tunku), MCA (lead by Tun Tan Cheng Lock) & MIC (lead by Tun Sambanthan) under the banner of the "Perikatan/Alliance" government.

Is not that the "Better & Smarter" choice by the Leadership of our Bapak Merdeka Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his 1st Malayan cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Westminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law in 1957....

Through INTELLIGENT POLITICAL NEGOTIATIONS & INTELLIGENT POLITICAL SOLUTIONS leading to a "Bloodless" handover & the Independence of Malaya!

It proves a point that Educated, Intelligent, Smart & Wise leaders do not have to resort to Threats, Militancy & unnecessary Battles with collateral damage & bloodshed to the citizens!

I was there at the Dataran Merdeka to witness the occassion on 31st August 1957 - the joy, tears & jubilation of Tunku, his cabinet & every Malay, Chinese, Indian, etc citizen of Malaya !

I hope we can accept the fact that our forefathers suffered but persevered & did not give up the struggle for Independence...until it was achieved !

Yes, Tunku & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS, EARNED the RESPECT, TRUST & SUPPORT of ALL the Malayan citizens.

It was in 1969 our Bapak Merdeka/ Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Westminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law was "Betrayed" with the "13th May 1969 BLOODY "coup d’état" by the "Elite UMNO Ketetuanan BEGGARS"....

Further this nation Desperately needs Intelligent, Time Proven Pragmatic Successful modelled, Financial, Politiical & Social "SOLUTIONS" NOW on BOTH sides of the Political Divide, to MITIGATE the IMPENDING Political & Financial fallout.

I had the honour of meeting & sharing a discussion with the late Tun Tan Siew Sin & Tun Hussein Onn prior to their passing. Their words & statements still ring clear in my ears....

Gone are the days of the Established, Honourable TRUE Malaysian TUANS of our Bapak Malaysia Tunku & his 1st Cabinet Minister's VALUES.

Party promotions based on “nepotism, patronization, money politics, etc” without “Meritocracy and Proven Successful Track Records” leads to “Leaders” that UMNO is inheriting....

Yes! & all that beautiful, harmonious & UNITED Malaysia were PRIOR to 1963 when Lee kuan yew started to mess everything up, questioning everything, like he just got out of the jungle not knowing the Constitution of Malaya!

We all know that RACIAL RIOTS broke off in Singapore and almost non-stop RIOTS in 1964! Thus, the immediate removal of them kiasuly extremed PAP in 1965.

But Tunku sure did a HUGE mistake by allowing Leekuan yew to establish PAP's Malaysian "arm" called DAP!

&, as we Moderate Malaysians All KNOW, this DAP has been continuing PAP's bull-dozing agenda of shear ignorance (buat2 bodoh/tak tahu on the sensitive issues) & thus, Creating CHAOS in Malaysia. Since 1963/4 their agenda is ALL THE SAME!...

Thus, my calling of all of us Moderate Malaysians (like those Civilized/sopan, Moderate/not racist, Smart/not reckless 'kera dapat bunga type' of people (as proven in Perak!) to just DENY DAP as much as they so want to "deny anything & everything MALAY & ISLAM".

GOD SAVE MALAYSIA.

We need SINCERE Malaysians as the Oppositions! -- If there' any Moderates in DAP, please just create a New Party if you so want to & can insyaAllah, gain the "respect" of the MAJORITY!

That Singapore had shown that it could survive was a slap on those who believed that Singapore would fold up once it left Malaysia .

Therefore it was natural that these doomsayers would try to rationalise their utterances to be in their favour to combat on whatever Kuan Yew commented. Its political jealousy.

Singapore achieved its development status without any fanfare. But here in Malaysia , a development that was deceptive was proclaimed as having achieved development status. It was trumpeted as an achievement that befits first world status. This was self delusion.

Malaysians are led to believe into a make believe world, a dream world. The leaders who themselves tend to believe in their own fabricated world did not realise the people were not taken in by this kind of illusion.

Lee Kuan Yew believed in calling a spade a spade. I was there in Singapore when the People's Action Party won the elections in 1959. He was forthright in his briefing to party members as to what was expected of them and what Singapore would face in the future.

Ideologically, I did not agree with him. We in the University of Malaya Socialist Club had a different interpretation of socialist reconstruction. But he was a pragmatist and wanted to bring development and welfare to the Singaporeans. Well! He succeeded.

Part 2...

Malaysia was so much embroiled in racial politics and due to the fear of losing political power, all actions taken by the main party in power was never targeted towards bringing wealth to all. Wealth was distributed to the chosen few only. They were the cronies and the backers of the party leadership to perpetuate their own selfish ends.

Seeing the efficiency and the progress achieved by Singapore caused the Malaysian leadership to suffer from an inferiority complex. That Malaysia should suffer from this complex was of its own making.

In a recent interview, Kuan Yew said that Malaysia could have done better if only it treated its minority Chinese and Indian population fairly. Instead they were completely marginalised and many of the best brains left the country in drove.

He added that Singapore was a standing indictment to what Malaysia could have done differently. He just hit the nail right there on the head.

Malaysia recently celebrated its 50th year of independence with a bagful of uncertainties. The racial divide has become more acute. The number of Malay graduates unemployed is on the increase. And this aspect can be very explosive. But sad to see that no positive actions have been taken to address these social ills.

Various excuses were given by Malaysian leaders why Singapore had far outstripped Malaysia in all aspects of social and economic advancement. Singapore was small, they rationalised and therefore easy to manage. Singapore was not a state but merely an island.

There was one other aspect that Malaysia practises and that is to politicise all aspects of life. All government organs and machinery were 'UMNO-ised'. This was to ensure that the party will remain in power. Thus there was this misconception by the instruments of government as to what national interest is and what UMNO vested interest is.

UMNO vested interest only benefited a few and not the whole nation. But due to the UMNO-isation of the various instruments of government, the country under the present administration had equated UMNO vested interest as being that of national interest.

Thus development became an avenue of making money and not for the benefit of the people. The fight against corruption took a back seat. Transparency was put on hold. And the instruments of government took it to be of national interest to cater to the vested interest of UMNO. Enforcement of various enactments and laws was selective.

Thus a 'palace' in Kelang, APs cronies and close-one-eye umno MPs could exist without proper procedure. Corruption infested all govt departments, the worse is the police and lately even in the judiciary.

Part 3....

Singapore did not politicise its instruments of government. If ever politicisation took place, it is guided by national interest. To be efficient and to be the best in the region was of paramount importance.

Thus all the elements like corruption, lackadaisical attitude towards work and other black elements, which would retard such an aim, were eliminated.

Singapore naturally had placed the right priority in it's pursuit to achieve what is best for its people. This is the major difference between these two independent countries.

Malaysia in its various attempts to cover up its failures embarked on several diversions. It wanted its citizens to be proud that the country had the tallest twin-tower in the world, although the structure was designed and built by foreigners. Its now a white-elephant wasting away. It achieved in sending a man into space at an exorbitant price. For what purpose? These are what the Malays of old would say "menang sorak" (hollow victories).

It should be realised that administering a country can be likened to managing a corporate entity. If the management is efficient and dedicated and know what they are doing, the company will prosper.. The reverse will be if the management is poor and bad. The company will go bust.

There are five countries around this region. There is Malaysia , and then Indonesia . To the east there is the Philippines and then there is that small enclave called the Sultanate of Brunei.

All these four countries have abundance of natural resources but none can lay claim to have used all these resources to benefit the people. Poverty was rampant and independence had not brought in any significant benefits to the people.

But tiny Singapore without any resources at all managed to bring development to its citizens.

It had one of the best public MRT transport systems and airlines in the world and it is a very clean city state. Their universities, health care, ports are among the best in the world.

It is impossible to compare what Singapore has achieved to what all these four countries had so far achieved. It was actually poor management and corruption, and nothing more. Everything is done for the vested interest of the few.

Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines and the Sultanate of Brunei need good management teams. They would not be able to do this on their own steam. Satu kali itu singapore kasi sama genting itu lesen garanti punya, u mali la, u malaysia punya wang ah semua u bawa pegi singapore buat it IR ah.

To do all that you mentioned, you would need to be suci dan murni and don't have skeletons for the others to dig up. If not, macam mana nak dakwa Toyol.

Tok, UMNO adakah orang macam itu ? Yang ada nampaknya ramai yang macam Toyol atau Nazri atau Rais atau Muyhiddin. Susahlah Tok. Mungkin dalam mimpi Seribu Satu Malam.
