The Free Muslim Man

In The Quran; in the chapter 5, verse 40(Quran 5:40), the relationship between God who punishes and forgives and the intermediaries who punish and (never) forgive on his behalf is laid out.

Using Abdullah Yusuf Ali’s translation and commentary of The Holy Quran, the verse says: knoweth thou not, that to Allah alone belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth? He punisheth whom He pleaseth, and He forgiveth whom He pleaseth: And Alah hath power Over All things.

I think the issue is finally settled. The idea that a handful of men- 3-5 people intermediating on God’s behalf and dispensing justice on His behalf on humankind, is abhorrent. It is repellent to the idea the free Muslim man.

To the free Muslim man, the justice dispensed by mortal man is absolutely challengeable. That is our attitude to the people in Kelantan in authority, who plan to carry out hudud punishments on their fellowmen. We don’t oppose the hudud laws, but we reserve our inalienable right to challenge the idea that it is permissible for a handful of men to act on behalf of God.

The issue not settled is the condition of the Muslim and his country. The Muslims are the poorest, income distribution among them is the most unfair, their educational and skill levels lagged behind that of other communities, they are engaged in economic activities drawing lesser incomes, business in their country is dominated by others, they lived in less desirable homes, their society and the country are ravaged by endemic corruption which has become second nature, the government profligate and careless.

The free Muslim man accepts and believes that Islam is thoroughly capable by reason of its inner spiritual force, of adaptation to the changing conditions of any age. That was one of central themes in the seminal ideas of great Muslim thinkers like Jamaludin alAfghani and Sheikh Muhd. Abduh.

The central purpose of Muslim nowadays is to get this country and as many Islamic nations in the world, out of theological rigidity, find the liberating force within Islam to overcome the limitations to their advancement.

The first priority of the free Muslim man is to ask how can he and his fellow persons do and say to retake Islam from being hijacked by a handful of persons who have turned it into a religion representing all that is bad about Islam and Muslims.

Islam itself has taken a lot of beatings. It’s a maligned religion. Allow me to explain.

Islamic politics? Just as a free market economy requires liberal democracy as its incubator, Islamic state appears to succeed only when it’s brought forth to this world through the barrel of the gun.

When someone from ISMA mentioned that the political process of democracy is a hindrance to the birth of an Islamic state and therefrom, the application of complete shariah law, no one seems to notice the incendiary nature of the remark. On the other hand, a report that the Council of Rulers rejected the Kelantan hudud bill, was taken as an assault on the institution of Malay rulers. The Council of Malay rulers did not suffer any ill repute. It will have to consider the bill when it is brought before it.

Now, as we are informed, the Council of Rulers did not even consider the bill and therefore made no decision on it. Then, what are we to make of the intention of Haji Hadi to table a private bill in parliament before it’s even brought before the Council?  When, by the terms of reference of the joint technical committee on hudud, the bill would have to be submitted to the Rulers Council and thereafter, be tabled in parliament by a federal minister.

The fact that Haji Hadi now intends to table a private member’s bill, suggests that the bill had in fact been submitted to the Rulers council where it failed and therefore does not require the tabling of the bill by a federal minister in parliament.

The storyline then will be the federal minister concerned  obeyed the Kings while Haji Hadi defied them.

As far as I can search the records in parliament, a private member’s bill hasn’t succeeded in the Malaysian parliament. So, the intended tabling by haji Hadi will be a non-event or even a nonstarter.

Be that as it may, we need to discuss the Hudud issue.

Islamic Justice? The system is maligned and calumniated as a system hurriedly seeking to severe limbs and lob off heads rather than establish a compassion and kindness based justice system that seeks to accommodate human frailties, however base they are.

Islamic economics? Also aspersed as a system that merely replaces usury with Islamic banking concepts and a system that justifies the concentration of wealth by the elites as being of divine design.

The fact remains, the Muslims are rich only because they get to be that way because of their positions which allow them to demand exactions; 90% of the top 10% Muslims in Malaysia got rich because they were given licenses, quotas,. The got rich because they are essentially rent seekers. The rest of the Muslims, whether PAS cares to admit or deny, are poor.

PAS wants the enforce hudud when the Muslims remain the poorest, backward, deprived of progress and advancement, desire prosperity, education and skills. It seems that PAS is out of touch with reality. PAS wants to enforce hudud on the rubber tappers, the share croppers, the pasar tani vendors, the fish resellers, the impoverished, and the BR1M recipients.

These are already among the most devout, submitting to the divine will, expecting and praying for compassion and deliverance and not punishment.

The unintended effect will be to bring Islam into public odium and contempt. Some people want to rush in to carry out cutting off limbs, behead people, crucify, have people whipped etc.  Carried out hurriedly will only calumniate the concept of Islamic justice when all around, the Muslims lived in poverty and backwardness. Surely this is not the idea of Islamic Justice.

What is the reasonable Muslim’s priority?

The reasonable Muslim is asking , they be allowed to be as Muslim as they can be, while pursuing worldly needs. They do want to be cultivated as Muslims- they don’t want to have their hands and legs cut off, nor having their persons whipped and lashed.

The declaration that its (PAS’s) priority is Allah’s redha (divine acceptance, blessed approbation) rather than mankind’s improvement is somewhat pompously selfish I think. That kind of stand is more appropriate for the monkish missionary. If there are many of them with that mind-set, they are more suited to be in missionary movements.

The purpose of all worldly political movements is the advancement and betterment of mankind in the present.

The reasonable Muslim does not want to defy Allah- have hudud laws in place but can we have a moratorium on their application until we sort out priorities. It’s not that having hudud unapplied, we become lesser Muslims. If there are grounds to apply a moratorium on the application of hudud punishments permissible within Islam itself, the reasonable Muslim wants that.

  1. Dato,
Your party should go all the way and cut off ties with the self righteous taliban party pas. Karpal was right not to let the hudud infested party at the doorstep of the parliment. The hudud law presented by them is probably a cut and paste idea from some 3rd country. These people are so lazy to think let alone how to administer a country. In the first paragraph you already state sin against Allah is punishment by Allah alone but later in your article you acknowledged hudud law. What do you keep hope on the lie of hudud propagated by these taliban pas. Are you and your party in denial with regards to the value of pas bring to the table?. Pas bring nothing to the table. These pas followers are increasing becuase of number of poor are increasing. Focus on the well being of rakyat, increase their income and you will find support to pas will decline .

  2. A lot of idiots say if you oppose this Pas Hudud's laws, you can't go to heaven. The idiotic Kelantan MB said, those who oppose Hududs are Kafirs.

Well there is no such things mentioned in the Holy Quran...as claimed by this idiots.

Surah Baiyina 98:7-8 says, 'those who have faith and do righteous deeds are the best of creatures. Their reward is with God, Gardens of Eternity, beneath which rivers flow. They will dwell in forever...' which is Heaven.

And in Buruj 85:11 God says, ' those who believe and do righteous deeds will be Gardens beneath which Rivers flow. This is the great Salvation, the fulfillment of all desires'.

It is not the duty of Kelantan or Hadi to implement the Hudud laws. It is the duty of the central government. If hadi and Kelantan believes that Hudud laws shld be implemented, then they shld ask the central government to initiate it. That is the best they shld and could do like what Nik Aziz did...given the circumstances in Msia.

....that is the more righteous acts in the eyes of God than wanting to implement the Hudud laws....bent on punishing people like maiming their limbs, flogging them or killing them...

...yang aku tengok Hadi asyik bersantau keLondon shj. Apa dia buat disitu? Patut pergi berdakwah diKelantan supaya rakyat Kelantan tidak melakukan perbuatan2 yg disebut diatas.

  4. Masalahnya encik sakmongkol, Hudud ni baru sahaja hendak dibahaskan. Pekat sangat ke sekularisma you all ni sampai jadi macam ni???

  5. Sak quoted the wrong verse. It shld be 5:43.

In the commentary at note 743 Abdullah Yusof ali writes:

" punishment really does not belongs to mortals but God alone...God not only punishes but forgives, and forgiveness is the attributes that is prominently placed before us. It is not our wisdom that can really defines the bounds of forgiveness or punishment, but His Will and Plan...

So by that verse which is related to the offence of theft, punishment and forgiveness is really in the domain of God alone, and not place in the hands of mortals like Hadi and his gang of mullahs...

You must check out Farouk Peru analysis of the theft punishment. He makes a good argument against it.

  7. anonymous 17.54.

    Itu bukan masalahnya.

Masalahnya adalah PAS sudah kena tipu.

Hadi awang hantar Bil persendirian.

  8. Ulamak2 PAS ni guna ugama utk penuh periok nasi mereka. Padahal dia tahu kerajan BN zalim dan yg ini sepatutnye didahulukan utk menyelamatkan rakyat yg majoritinye beragama islam. Tp nak buat macamana. Ulamak2 ni pun nk hidup mewah, nak kawin 4, nak berjawatan tinggi. Itu sbb sanggup jadi barua Umno agar Pakatan berpecah.

  9. Look at how the Sedition Act and Penal Code are being abused on our fellow citizens. And since the PAS hudud bill is also man-made, it's just a matter of time the implementation and execution can also be abused in spite of all the reassurances given.
    Remember man proposes, God disposes.

    Now everyone can cry.

25 years of collecting state tax and selling timber cant even buy a boat to help during flood. Kicking and screaming by state adun saying federal responsibility to assist with flood. Kelantanes should say enough is enough with pas. Time to replace paswith something more beneficial to the people of kelantan

  16. Sallam Dato'

Adakah kerana disebabkan pemergian Nik Aziz maka terdapatnya perebutan kuasa?

Tapi jangan bimbang, semuanya dibuat kerana Allah SWT! Inilah dia "orang-orang yang beriman". Nilai-nilai ugama jadi tonggang terbalik dibuatnya, hidup-hidup tipu manusia.

  18. Say all you want guys, ISLAM is rising and it is unstoppable. Around 20 years ago when HUDUD was first brought up by PAS, hardly anyone have heard of it. Now people are discussing about it openly. Although the misconception about the matter is still to be resolved, believe me we are getting there. Just two years ago a catholic priest in the UK suggest the implementation of the ISLAMIC LAW to replace the existing uneffective civil law. And last but not least, all this fuss about the word ALLAH where the christians out of no where stake claim on it BUT at the same time rejected HUDUD. Isn't that hyppocrasy in the highest order??? If you want to use the word ALLAH then accept ALLAH's rule! comprende.

  19. I used to respect you and never fail to read your blog every day. But after reading your article today, I have totally lost respect for you.

What we're you trying to SAY? Did you even try to defend the Islamic law or hudud no matter which version? Do you totally reject the concept of Islamic justice.? If you want to attract the non Muslims to be fans of yours by all means please do but do remember that you are Muslim first and you are obliged to defend Islamic.
May Allah guide us all to the right path.

"ISLAM is rising and it is unstoppable"

    Agreed, but which type?

    a) The Malay type like the great majority of wage-earning Malays — the technocrats, bureaucrats, taxi drivers, fishermen, etc, etc who go about keeping Malaysia throbbing with life?

    b) The Malay type aka Arab celup wearing serban and kopiahs with sparse beard who quote chapter and verse to warn of the approaching doomsday non-stop?

    c) The Arab type — always something to quarrel about?

ISLAM in Malaysia rose many years ago and was rising all the time until playful, carefree and spendthrift politicians turn up.

So I say type (a) must take full control from now to "guide us all to the right path."

  21. Some people would like to have others believe that Islam is a monolith and their's only one version of Islam, that is their version or their understanding of it. Truth is there are many versions or understanding of what the concept of Islam is.

To impose Pas version or Pakistan version on others and say this is (the only true) Islam is not telling the truth. You may like it because that is how you in your mind understanding it, but Allah himself will not like it. Allah knows more than you.
