Why the New Government will not be another BN

the crowd at my ceramah in Parit Buntar

Before I go off on another extended round of ceramahs, I am posting this article. Many times, I have been confronted with a typical response- why should we change government? The new people in power will do the same things the present govern does. They will steal, rob and pillage and build up cronies around them. Whoever I choose, my lot will still be the same.
This kind of response which seems difficult to counter in the first place can be dealt with when proper reasoning is applied. First, the typical answer reveals an admission that the present government does what it is accused of- a litany of misdeeds. Corruption, pillage, embezzlement( RM80 billion each year over the last 10 years being smuggled out of the country- a hotchpotch of ill-gotten gains such as bribery, commissions, inflated transfer pricing and such things).
We have scored a victory in having these deeds admitted.
Once again I  come to my previous argument which asks why is it that even the most liberal of minds seem unable to accept that those good souls outside the corridors of power are not capable of doing good, while we, ( of the establishment of course) are more than endowed to do good things. We are the good people, they, the bad.
The answer to this of course- holding ourselves in such esteem only requires self-praise and an appeal to the emotions. The emotional side of our brain is receptive to such self-praises.
On the other hand, accepting that those good souls outside the corridors of power are also capable as we are, require deeper and serious reasoning. The reasoning is indirect and appeals to the rational side of our brains. Now, because our part of the brain that deals with emotions is particularly receptive to emotive persuasions, we obviously find ourselves readily susceptible to emotional appeals. ( Wow- I like the word susceptible because it reminds me of the statement that a certain Mongolian lady of leisure who has since departed, was also susceptible to anal sex) The rational portion on the other hand requires more arguments and is therefore more slowly influenced, but once influenced, reasoned arguments become convictions that will be uneasy to shake.
The next government replacing the BN and UMNO will not be the same and they will not repeat the so many transgressions committed by UMNO and BN.
Three things act as insurance against a repeat.
One, the sum total of our accumulated experience pushes the boundaries of our social consciousness. The lessons learn impose constraints upon the new government from transgressing. Members of society become advocates of propriety and probity. The heightened social consciousness serve as sufficient deterrent for would be transgressors.
Two- the sum total of our accumulated experience living under the rule of a corrupt and duplicitous government, served as grounds to acquired standard of measures. What are the standards? Standards that abhor corruption, abuse of power, cronyism etc. Members of society made wiser by the sum total of accumulated experience, know that if the new government does steps A, B, C, D they will eventually lead to an unwanted E. the new standards of measure by which good governance is evaluated further serve as boundaries for accepted behaviour of rulers. They are censored even before outcome E is achieved.
3rd, this is an age where good governance is the norm rather than an exception. Our own society’s preference for good governance is now represented by the Rafizi Ramli’s, the Bawanis, the Adam Adlis of our country. Everything is questioned which forces the new government to act within the boundaries of the norm.
So, the answer is no- the new government replacing UMNO/BN will not be the same. It will not be because of the new social constraints.
So my fellow Malaysians- if you want the answers to these questions:-
1.   Who are the people behind the murder of Altantuya
2.   Who got the money from the purchase of the submarines
3.   Who get money from the purchase of littoral combat ships, from the purchase of armoured personnel carriers, purchase of airplanes etc
4.   If we want to bring to book the many KSUs who invented projects near the end of their tenures as retirement fund
5.   What Dr Mahathir really accomplished during his 22 years tenure as PM,
We must all resolve to kick out UMNO and BN.

  2. This is the kind of message...loud and clear...no beating around the bush...that voters...especially the young educated Malaysians will pay attention and listen carefully.
Compare this...with Najib's non stop campaigning with money..with shows...dinners..so clear to catch fishes....he is doing.
Why does a 55 years old Govt needs to campaign so hard..so desperately...so vigorously. nowadays......especially by Mahathir and Najib?
The reasons are given by Sak at his written...5 points.
After 12th GE....cans and cans of dirt and worm exposed by PR politicians.
How nice Umno b Govt is....not one being sued for telling lies.
It is the other way round....Utusan told lies....sued and found guilty..pay huge compensation. Any other Govt will cancel the license.
Telling lies are very much needed by Najib.
    Meanwhile the Show Dog..keep performing.
    Last count....
"Are you ready for BN?"...bad bad mistake....yet asking 3 times!!!
    Is he deaf??

  3. Dato, the doubters of a new incoming gomen to be the same as the corrupted good for nothing pillaging Umno/BN,are usually the chicken hearted tongkat, crutches and wheelchair dependents. These people are scared of changes and will give all sorts of reasons and excuses, that the devils in Umno/BN are better than the untested in PR.

Yes,we have to agree that with a new gomen comes with a price. That all men/ladies are not equal. There will be honest, not so honest and the very greedy and corrupted to surface after they get used to warming the cozy chairs in Putrajaya.

But the greedy and corrupted will be kept to a minimun,as the rakyat will be watching like an eagle. And the Umno/BN will be waiting for a chance to whack them too.Like in Singapore there are always a few bad apples, but they will not be swept under the carpet, like what Umno/BN does.

Whatever a PR gomen does will anytime be many many times better than the Umno/BN.Do these doubters not know that many containers of illegally gotten ringgit are shipped out every year.Just imagined what these hundreds of billions of ringgit can do to the economy,if they stayed inside the country. The economy will be booming.

In a booming economy, the people will be working and with better wages too.A happy people and workforce will see less crimes,as no happy person will go on a crime rampage,as what is happening now.The streets will be safe, and children can wander the streets not afraid of been kidnapped or afraid of child predators.

We do not have to look far.Just look at that small little red dot of an island state down South.

  8. Dear Sakmongkol

“Why should we change government? The new people in power will do the same things the present government does.”

This is an important question, and it must be answered clearly and decisively. We cannot answer by saying PR is different from the current BN bunch, or that the PR people have learned from the mistakes of the BN fellows so will not commit breaches of trust. The PR people will, if they are in government for 55 years, like the BN guys.

The answer consists of two parts. The first is that we must install and restore the institutions of power – the courts, an independent civil service and a fearless parliament that guards the interest of the people, not the interest of the party. In other words we must restore effective checks and balances into the political and governance systems. Mahathir has destroyed all these.

The second part consists of telling the people that they truly have the power in a democracy, not the people whom they vote into office. These are merely their public servants. Currently the people in government are divorced from the people who elected them, bullying and bossing over them. The government seems to be a version of the monarchy, an institution that you pay unquestioned loyalty to. No, we do not need to be loyal to the government, only to our country. The government is not the country. So tell them: the government is of the people, by the people and for the people. If the government (including a PR one) is unresponsive to our needs we kick them out in 5 years time. So democracy is premised on choices. Without choice we might as well have a dictatorship, and we have had a quasi-dictatorship for 55 years already. Enough is enough. By exercising our choice we are exercising our democratic right to good government.

  9. kalau boleh, selepas pilihanraya, tiada lagi sebut nama-nama parti BN ka, PR ka.... itu semua kita simpan. Lakukan kerja pentadbiran dengan nama kerajaan Malaysia..

    ReplyDelete
  10. Such is the success of the present regime in planting the perception that anybody who helms the government is the same ie as corrupted as they are. This is purely to justify their plundering of the country. It is sickening to see that even some "educated" citizens think the same way.

It is definitely going to be different when a new government takes over. History shows that even the worst dictator in the world started off with good governance. However derailment started to happen when they tried to hang on to power at all cost and family interest, cronyism, nepotism come into play. This is where a strong 2 party system becomes crucial for check and balance. In addition, some constitutional changes need to be done like limiting the PM to two terms, making MACC responsible directly to Parliament and freeing the judiciary and mainstream media.

Of course the new social constraints will play an important role too with alternative media and more demanding young generation in the picture.

For now, I do hope PR is ready to counter cheatings by UMNO/BN in the coming GE13. Its good to see large crowds at PR ceramahs but history shows that it did not necessarily translate into votes.

If we, the RAKYAT can yanked out BN because of all the wrongs it has committed, we the RAKYAT can also similarly yanked out the PR government if it did the same wrongs that are unacceptable to the rakyat, we just have to wait for 5 years.

This is the beauty of having a successful 2 party system, the RAKYAT are the BOSS and the government are our employees, HIRE and FIRE will be normal.

  13. We expect the new government to restore all that has been destroyed by BN, restore the judiciary, MACC, PDRM, clean up the EC, free the media etc. We also expect a strong and viable 2 party system. A strong opposition will provide the good check and balance..

  14. Salam,

Lihatlah bolasepak kita,gara-gara keras kepala puak penyamun politik, sampai bila. Lihatlah filem kita, entah sampai kemana. Lihatlah ranking universiti kita, entah kemana.

Kita harap semua pembaca semua disini, menyeru kepimpian PR nanti :

UBN will do whatever it takes to stay in power, to avoid from prosecution, return of stolen wrealth, the safety of corrupted families, cronies & hidden assets. Eg. Zambabwe, Khazakstan etc.....

  19. Dato Sak,

My view is that, PR having tasted power in governing state government will DEFINATELY be CLEAN at least for the 1st 2 terms. This is because, i strongly believe the PR leadership does not want to be termed as "1 TERM" government. So they will do their utmost best to reduce if not eliminate corruption. Anything longer than 2 terms, is a no no as power will lead to greed, and greed will lead to corruption.

  20. Dato dear. Assalaamu ealaikum wa Rahmatu'Llaahi wa Barakaatuh. I would like to contribute something to you and to all concern.

Sermon of Ali ibn Abi Thalib karama'Llaahu wajhah.

Grounds for accepting the Caliphate and the qualities of a ruler and governor.

"O' (people of) differing minds and divided hearts, whose bodies are present but wits are absent. I am leading you (amicably) towards truthfulness, but you run away from it like goats and sheep running away from the howling of a lion. How hard it is for me to uncover for you the secrets of justice, or to straighten the curve of truthfulness.

O' my Allah! Thou knowest that what we did was not to seek power nor to acquire anything from the vanities of the world. We rather wanted to restore the signs of Thy religion and to usher prosperity into Thy cities so that the oppressed among Thy creatures might be safe and Thy forsaken commands might be established. O' my Allah! I am the first who leaned (towards Thee) and who heard and responded (to the call of Islam). No one preceded me in prayer (salat) except the Prophet.

You certainly know that he who is in charge of honour, life, booty (enforcement of), legal commandments and the leadership of the Muslim should not be a miser as his greed would aim at their wealth, nor be ignorant as he would then mislead them wiith his ignorance, nor be of rude behaviour who would estrange them with his rudeness, nor should he deal unjustly with wealth thus preferring one group over another, nor should he accept a bribe while taking decisions, as he would forfeit (others) rights and hold them up without finality, nor should he ignore sunnah as he would ruin the people."

Hope you be enliighten as I was and still am. Wassalam.
