Sorting out the AES Crossword Puzzle for Ahmad Talib

I have not read the NST or Sunday Times for a long time. It’s the paper than has no more credibility says Lee Kuan Yew. As fate has it, I chanced upon a copy of The Sunday Times when one was shoved underneath my room door in Mersing. Jeepers! Maybe the quantity that is supplied to all hotels in Malaysia accounts for the NST’s circulation! Take that way, and it is just another paper fit for wrapping nasi biryani.
It was the usual stuff. It screamed the story about Najib handing more than RM500 million being the final payment of a RM 15,000 bribe to 112,635 Felda settlers. By the way, the broker who secured the deal for the Scorpene submarines which the deputy minister of the said ministry said were not suited to the salinity of Malaysian waters, got RM 500 million too. A group of perhaps not more than 5 people got to share the RM500 million loot, 112,635 work-hardened Felda settlers share the RM500 million. Najib is indeed generous to a fault.
And the second generation cannot wait to get their hands on a bungalow of 1000 square feet. Why are you so anxious fellas?  They are not getting if for free. It will cost them RM 70,000 per house and with that size it is costing them RM70 per square foot. That’s expensive. Are they qualified to take up a RM 70,000 loan? If they are not, their shouts of joy and the excitement are premature. Furthermore, their parents are also living in bungalows- so what they are getting is not an extraordinary achievement.
Pakatan Rakyat can give you better and give you a meaning in life. The latter, Najib cannot give.
The other piece of news is the piece written by Ahmad Talib, feigning bewilderment  at the reason why people do not want to save lives and limbs. Those who oppose the implementation of the AES must be crazy said he. He cannot understand why there is opposition against the implementation of the AES. True to the propagandist that he is, he quotes the newly minted Haji, Dato Solah of JPJ.
His piece of writing as with so many others are what we expect from people who received training from NST- the paper that no longer has credibility. In an earlier article, I wrote of the petition writers being trapped below the standards of Kadir Jasin or Jocelyn Tan. I am laughing when people assumed that I meant a high standard of journalism at the mention of the 2 names. Ha ha. Since when has Kadir Jasin and Jocelyin Tan set high standards of journalism? Kadir Jasin is no William Safire. I can’t even associate Jocelyn Tan with big names of her gender.  Let me state what I meant more clearly- the petition writers are trapped within the boundaries of mediocrity.
We will answer Ahmad Talib.
A few weeks ago, some rather odd looking Melayus in Penang held a noisy and unruly demonstration against people who are against the enforcement of the AES. Surely this response is the product of years of indoctrination by UMNO which owns the media industrial complex.  After years of living on UMNO’s dole, this is the kind of behavior we have come to expect. We expect such things as unruly crowd behavior, butt exposing dance in front of a Malaysian citizen’s private home, we expect stone throwing and paint splashing. All symptoms of the small mind that UMNO has created after 55 years of ruling the country.
It has come to this. Any objection to the policies of the government is seen as an objection and rejection by non-Malays against a Malay led government. It has been reduced to racial denomination. And that is the product of UMNO upbringing this country. Say something unfavorable to the Kings- that’s a grand plan by non-Malays to overthrow the Malay monarchy. Say something about no compulsion in religion; you are accused of condoning apostasy. The worms are coming out of the woodwork.
I have written a long time ago while still an UMNO member, of the danger of UMNO claiming ownership to all wrongs in society.  When that happens- it’s an application of a corrupted version of Deutschland über alles that is easily and readily translated into- my uncompromising stand right or wrong. Even when a policy or an action is socially and morally reprehensible, since UMNO has taken up ownership of such a stand/policy, it must now be defended at all costs by the storm troopers. The most effective way it seems is to treat objections to their policies as racially motivated. Its non-Malay against a Malay led government.
We agree with Ahmad Talib- those who oppose the protection of limbs and lives must be crazy. We differ only as to the reasons for our objection. To most of us, and to all those who protest, the AES is just an excuse to make some selected people rich. (2) Its a lazy approach to solve traffic problems. (3) it’s a stupid move- when one can have full receipt of revenues, only the stupid will agree to have it divided.
The economics of outsourcing what is basically a law enforcement agency’s primary responsibility, has enormous ramifications. It shows the bald stupidity of the government in not being able to appreciate the interest of the greater good.  If the AES nets 500,000 cars a day; that would earn the AES 500,000 x RM300= RM 150,000,000. Multiply that on an average 30.4 days a month your get 4.560 billion. Multiply that number for 12 months, you get RM54.72 billion a year. Now if this is the level of revenue expected on an average of 500,000 cars netted a day, why is the government so stupid as to outsource this revenue earning resource?
This is the result of 55 years of economic management by the UMNO/BN government. First they socialize the means of production, now they are socializing the results of production. Among themselves that is.
We object to the enforcement of the AES on practical and economic reasons. We all know that speed kills, but enforcing the AES hides the usual UMNO strategy of enriching a selected group. Why share government revenue when it already has a system of collecting it? The revenue from summonses can be done just as effectively by the PDRM which already has more than 3000 cameras installed over the country. In addition let us not forget of the various speed traps set up by the Police and the continuous road safety campaigns held by the Police. If the system is not yet good, it can be made so by upgrading the technological and technical infrastructure.
The 2 companies that got the contract for the Automated Enforcement System (AES), claimed that it will cost between RM600 million and RM800 million to install 831 cameras in traffic hotspots nationwide. The question is, does it cost RM600-800 million to install the 831 cameras which means it would cost RM722, 000-RM962, 000 per camera? The cameras are being NFC-ied!
If Ahmad Talib does not already know- we would be glad to educate him so that his puzzlement can be cured. The project was opposed because it’s a cause for concern- all projects sanctioned by UMNO must hide some corrupt elements. The giving of the contract gives rise to the perception of unfair largesse to the concession holders.
Why do we want to let the companies gain RM16 for each of the first five million summons paid by traffic offenders in the first tier, resulting in a sum of RM80 million? The two companies stand to gain up to RM270 million for the second tier, which awards them half of the revenue collected; and 7.5 per cent of the remaining revenue under tier 3. Data from the government shows that around 170 million summons are issued in one year.
If the summons costs RM300 each, that would bring revenue of RM51billon a year. If this amount can be collected by the government directly, if only the system already with the police is improved, why share the revenue?
The same noble objectives of saving lives and limbs which Ahmad Talib is so passionate about can be equally achieved without compromising government revenue. Unless of course the real reason for accepting the AES, is to allow the money changers in the government share the loot.

Ahmad A Talib-wasn't he one of the directors behind the failed Paya Indah Wetlands? how much of the people's money was wasted in that project? I wonder how much of the money went to the pockets of the people close to the then PM. who else was the PM at that time-it has to be the mega ego-maniac one. Will Ahmad Talib clarify his role and whether he had taken a sen from this project? Unless he does this, that chay kai reporter has no right to talk about any puzzlement. The only subject he should talk about is embezzlement.

A belated welcome to Mersing Dato'. Couldn't make it to the ceramah yesterday night. Saw the banners of you and the others coming to town. Too bad time was not on my side.
Hope you enjoy Mersing hospitality. Do come again, with Pak AA, hopefully.
Heard YB Datuk Dr. Latiff really pissed off with his gerombolan boys lately. PR should step up works with good strategy for Mersing constituency.

  3. Sir,

The policemen are too busy watching over PR and there are not enough of them to catch thieves, including those licensed ones to rob the rakyat. AES is but just one of them.

  4. Sorry I didn't read the NST except for their weekly Travel Times magazine. Thanks for telling me of his puzzlement as I am one of those who oppose the AES as I also see it as daylight robbery by those involved.

You just don't get it after all these years with UMNO. The AES was NEVER about the rakyat or the government's coffer. Nobody in the BN government ever said that.

It is for the selected few to screw the millions. Who cares about drivers and passengers losing limbs.

  6. Dear Sakmongkol

The PR governments in Penang and Selangor have already declared that they are not going to allow the AES to be operated in their states. I cannot recall if Kedah and Kelantan are also going to do the same. This shows that the PR is doing something sensible. It is not that they oppose reducing road accidents. It is that they oppose the way this is being done.

This distinction must be made clear to the UMNO/BN government and the brainless JPJ. No one in his right mind opposes accident reduction. What we oppose is the way this scheme is being privatised. Traffic rules enforcement is one of the core functions of the JPJ. If they want to privatize away their jobs then we should demand that they retrench a portion of the JPJ. Better still, why not completely do away with this department and privatize it entirely?

What is it that these 2 crony companies can do that they JPJ and the Police cannot? They do not know where to source for the camera system (try UK, Germany or US)? They don’t know how to install the equipment (supplier will gladly show you)? They don’t know how to take pictures of speeding cars (these are automated cameras that send pictures via airwaves to computers in offices)? They don’t know how to process the photos (they are already doing this now)? They don’t have experience with sophisticated equipment (don’t blame these nincompoops, but neither have the crony companies)? The government can’t borrow RM700 million (but 2 small unknown companies can)?

There are 3 other things we must bear in mind. First, did JPJ check how much the cameras actually cost? Someone said USD 50,000 per camera or about RM150,000. So it should cost about RM125 million, say RM250 million with installation, etc. Why is the government compensating them for RM700 million? Second, why are we paying hundreds of million more over 5 years for them to manage the cameras when the JPJ is probably already overstaffed? Third, after 5 years these 2 crony companies can sell the cameras back to JPJ. Now if JPJ can or has to operate these cameras after 5 years why not start right now?

We can only end this stupidity, cronyism and corruption when we elect into office a better and smarter government.

  8. The leader still makes comments as if he is a saint while the follower is palpably unaware of the anomaly of the arithmetic of distribution. Rm500 million divided by 5 people compared with Rm500 million divided by 112,635 people, and Ahmad Talib has still not gone crazy with righteous indignation over the humongous difference between rewards to cronies in air-conditoned comfort and pittance to the men who sweat it out in the jungle. Ahmad in fact prefers instead to wonder why others have gone crazy for not attaching any value to their life and limb.

Over and over again we see UMNO intent upon enriching a small group of cronies. If they can justify AES now, even with the 3000 cameras already in place operated by PDRM, nothing is impossible in the future by UMNO. Everything will be fair game, and race, religion, loyalty, king and State will continue to be raised to generate fear and hatred while UMNO operates behind the scene to create more billionaires. Greed breeds more greed. But it takes a home-grown corporate leader to tell all of us the kind of men we now have in our midst.

Datuk Shahrani Abdullah is quoted to have alluded to greed extant in our midst, in his own whimsical manner, thus:
"I like the tiger. It is a powerful animal with sharp instincts. When it goes after its prey, it is absolutely focused. It will not stop in its pursuit until the prey is captured and it will not 'makan' things along the way. When it is full it 'tak usek' anymore. The ular sawa is different. Sini hentam, situ makan even when it already has a prey. That's not good. So I say,"Jadilah harimau tapi jangan jadi 'hari hari mau' because greed is dangerous... Some people always makan tak kenyang."

Najib must take the public for fools to believe that he has kept his side of the bargain. Kami yang rasa yang mana janji ditepati dan yang mana dimungkiri.

  14. Setting aside the notorious issue of supposed-to-be 4th Estate warriors who turn out to be BN-freindly propaganda whores...

There was a report about Kong Cho Ha with the title "AES will be installed despite opposition".

This die-hard bulldozing kamikaze effort from Kong Cho Ha is giving rise to more and more suspicion.

Why? Just why is he seemingly willing to sacrifice more and more popular support, which equates to votes in the comeing elections, in his push for the AES to be installed?

Brings to minds the same die-hard bulldozing kamikaze effort to get the LYNAS rare-earth plant up and running.

And again, why? Just why is Najib and his cohorts seemingly willing to sacrifice more and more popular support, even as Najib himself is getting more and more wobbly in his Pekan constituency, and UMNO/BN, nationwide?

All that useless "Kami Mendengar", "People First..." and assorted propaganda (which incidentally must have cost much of the rakyat's money), but still stomping wholesale on the public outcry against such projects.

    Why?

Is there any truth in the talk that it all boils down to BIG money?

And perhaps adding much credence to the suggestion of a last ditch grab-all-we-can spree ahead of possible/expected kick-in-their-backside out from Putrajaya come GE13?

  17. I am sure there is a strong possibility that UMNO members and its leaders will have a back door method to waive their summonses.
That is why they are supporting AES.

One has to be an idiot, imbecile and moron all in one to support this EAS cameras. Then why do you think UMNO is for it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. In developed countries such as UK and Hong Kong which are determined to save lives and limbs, the cameras are clearly displayed for all motorists to see with huge notice boards warning of cameras. Hong Kong even went one step further, with notice boards, clearly visible cameras and one camera each at almost every 1 kilometre distance. With so many cameras, how to speed?Msia's AES system hides the cameras at obscure places for the MAIN AND PRIMARY objective of collecting money. Saving lives and limbs are just excuses to validate the politicians money making scheme.

It mentions 500 000 slaves labour working for Chinese plantation destroying Sabah and SArawak rainforests.

Many more interesting items. Its good at least we can debate with such people and make them see they are just henchman.

The puppetmaster lay the ground work to steal money by AES, Education Blueprint, Mydin, oil palm subsidies, diesel subsidy..etc,

All the schemes for the chinese and tamil business to steal money.

  23. Dear Dato,

If there are more than 3000 cameras operated by the PDRM, there should be a post-mortem on the effectiveness of the speed cameras in reducing road accidents.

Can we have a look into it and learn from it?

Even if the government collects all this 'revenue', it is not the result of any productive increase. Nothing is produced. It is just pure talking from the rakyat. Is that GDP? So, we are not allowing either the government and specially NOT the pirates from the private sector in cohorts with the powers that be, to use piracy to preach us road safety to get to our hard earned money. No way!

We will keep our promises to the people in the next PRU - throw out a stained, corrupt and hypocritical govt first, then put on trial at least 100 men and women in the first judicial tsunami, Richter 9.9 for all top Party and civil servants, the 2nd will come @ 8.8 to trawl in all the cronies suspected of big-time thefts.

The rakyat are not morons and were never morons, only too polite and too gentle to spit on the faces of BN politicians. They will still not spit. This time PR will be helped by the God-fearing 99.9% in the civil service who experience first-hand how they have been manipulated by their top bosses and politicians - BTN is a double-edged sword. Draw blood and live humbly, and the audience absorb the message; draw blood and live scandalously, feasting and flaunting ill-gotten wealth and the audience grit their teeth in silence just for so long.
