How to FU- foul up

When Tun Razak called a few of his associates over to the house, Najib who was then a young boy was playing upstairs. House was Sri Taman. Najib was a hyperactive boy when young. He would throw small objects such as scissors downstairs and Tun Razak's friends would laugh at his antics.
He was not mindful of what the father was doing. What the father did was call in local talent to brainstorm what to do. In education Tun Razak woul call people like Ainudin Wahid ( the boss of UTM for a long time) Professor Zainal Abidin Wahid, Syed Nasir, Rahman Talib and so forth. They would then plan what to do.
Similarly in economics, Razak would call people like the Kuantan born Thong Yaw Hong, the young Navaratnam to map out economic strategies. Tun Razak employed brainy people like Zain Azrai. He used local talent because these people know local conditions.
And Tun Razak himself thought hard about his vision. He wasn't sparse and miserly on using the grey matter.
Unfortunately Najib didn't learn. He prefers to use APCO for his PR because his media advisers say APCO is good. For business and economic modeling, he uses Mckinsey. Even the NEAC's NEM was crafted by 10 people but heavily flavored with text book business and economic language not any different if we are redaing university books. The only thing good about these entities is the fees they charged. They run into millions.
After reading the thick NEM document by the NEAC, I come away with the conclusion, a few of us can do a better job. Najib should have used talent from the university the father set up- the Universiti Kebangsaaan. Even octogenarian Ungku Aziz can still contribute ideas.
Just who the hell counseled Najib to set up these things?
The greatest danger Najib is facing now, is the disconnect between him and the reality on the ground. This will prove to be his undoing.
What do people think about his pillar of 1 Malaysia? just another slogan to identify his uniqueness. Every PM since Mahathir seems to have one. But Najib sees to have outdone everyone. He has 1 Malaysia, GTP, ETP, NEM, SRIs, NKRAs, NKEAs etc etc. if our leaders mean it's about living together harmoniously, we have been doing that for a long time. As best as we could.
We quarrel only when politicians harped on our differences. Otherwise our leaders go go international when going to bed, they and we do business with each other. Indeed it is a common practice among those in power to take money more easily from others not of the same race. Otherwise we aren't particularly conscious of our racial differences.
The fundamental cause of ethnic frictions is the economic disparities. This leadership hasn't solved the problem of economic disparities since it became a national issue from 1970. That's 40 years.
Just look around us. In 1979 when I started working, the graduate earned probably around RM 1200. Now the starting pay is around RM 2000. It has increase only 2 times. A car costing RM 7000 now costs RM 40,000. That has increased 6 times. A house? What used to cost 20,000 now costs 180,000? The bloody cost of living has outstripped our earning capacity by so many times!. Economics is the main issue. Make us rich, we don't care about the racial differences.
Ok, we want to get to an income level of USD 15-20k. in 10 years. How do we get there? By leveraging on the 8 SRIs- don't laugh. Its acronym time once more. Strategic reform initiatives.
I could almost hear the solemn declaration that we need steely political resolve and will. Well, begin by fortifying the PM's resolve first. He is fast becoming a better flip flopper than Pak Lah. He says the recommendations in the NEM are not finalized yet.
The ETP which was a major show was delegated to the most junior minister. We would have thought, such a program of gargantuan proportions- spending 1.44 trillion over 10 years required the steady hands of the PM himself. Now, we know, if Idris Jala can do the presentation, anyone can. You just have to read the script.
Break logjam of vested interests. Well, let's start with a moratorium banning the participation of the big players for a while. Najib will not dare do this. Even as we write, Syed Mokhtar is writing plans to take over UEM, to take over the RRI land and lands belonging to the government. No open bidding. Desmond Lim the developer of Pavilion was tasked to develop the Sungei Besi after the other brokers found no one had the experience do so. He is also busy writing business plans to take over such things like Bakun and other things. Jho Low and LTAT didn't have the technical expertise to develop real property, so lets call in Cindy and Desmond.
Break the logjam of vested interests by saying, thank you for your kind inputs and now let's open up the bidding. You people have reaped the pre harvests, let others benefit now. but to some people, Najib's re-energizing the private sector means, giving sweetheart deals to selected market players.
If people say this is good economics, please carry on. We shall delight in attacking your deceit.

abang najib had to used APCO because BN leaders are less brainy including him. They cant even think a plan for themselves. They are not visionary leaders. May be because this time they wanted to do it differently, they want to treat the country like a company. Get the con sultans to do thinking, these cons only thinking about their fees and they why you see a lot of text books business plan copied elsewhere....personally I dont think it will works. they need to engage the rakyat and understand their needs and wants. Its so simple..no need for acronymns

  5. Dear Sakmongkol

The main difference between the father and the son is this. Tun Razak, as you pointed out, used people who had no financial interest in the advice they gave; they worked in the interest of the nation, and we remember these people fondly for their contribution to nation building.

The son uses advisors who want a big cut to the action. They propose projects that they would be awarded through the Swiss challenge method - no challenge at all. That's the main difference. That's why we are all screwed up.

Why the difference? Cronyism didn't exist in Razak's time. UMNO was a real party of the Malays and fighting for all. Now UMNO is the front for cronies, pretending to fight for Malay interests but in reality robbing them but enriching themselves and their friends.

  6. "..those in power to take money more easily from others not of the same race."

UMNO takes money in the millions belonging to Chinese-the money they earned through gambling, drinking, pig farming, prostitution and everything that is Haram.
But when it is a mere RM 100 given to the poor Malays they rage and rave at Pakatan.
Little wonder RPK said today (read his "No Hold Barred" today) that he prefers to touch a pig than UMNO people.

  7. Sakmongkol, you are right when you say the ETP favoured big business like Syed Mokhtar. All the project in the ETP will not work because if you do an audit on the finances of the govt, the GOVT of MALAYSIA today is BANKRUPT because of corruption by Umno and BN.So,the govt do not have the money to fund the projects. As stated in the ETP,the private sector will fund 92% of the cost. Big business like YTL,MMC,Gamuda,IJM and others as always will not come with the money but instead will issue BOnds guaranteed by the govt like what happen to PKFZ and the LANGKAWI TUNA PROJECT. By the way we do not need a high speed train to Singapore that cost the rakyat billions when you can get there conveniently by air or buses. When Dr M give the ERL project to YTL,THIS DEAL COME WITH THE CARROT THAT YTL will receive 10% of all airport tax collected in Malaysia. So,it will not surprise me if YTL is given this train project 10% of our income tax will go to YTL.At the end of the day,the rakyat is the victim.

lucky you...after graduate can start over with rm1200...in the year 2000, my batch have to coped with as low as rm400-rm1800 salary...it have not changed in the private sector....the players are just not interested in taking local made talents...the government have taken up the challenge to increase their servant salaries to meet 2020 goals...but the quality and mentality of the public servants mainly/largely still in the 3rd world pastures

just hope the next GE will come next year...maybeso, change of government will have us all a better life

  9. I remember once a ex minister said when I asked why the present ministers were getting richer than those ex ministers although living quite comfortably were not very rich.

The answer from the Hon Ex Minister" In my time there was no PRIVATIZATION "

Privatization started all these hanky panky and destroyed all the inter racial trusts that have been going forward.

Now everybody is grabbing and pilfering what is left.

  12. Lets do our own ETP..

Doubling income in 10 years needs abt 7.2 % per annum growth compounded. And add the population increase to that, minimum seems to be 9 % per annum..

Assuming ,business as usual will provide 4.5 %..there is simply about 4.5 % of new value add needed..i.e approximately 450 bil in 2020

That of cos does not account for the sunset effect on some industries and reducing oil & gas income..

But,the more important factor for the rakyat is WAT do I get out of this? Its not good if my earnings double but my cost of living triples..

And the ETP genius plans is ALL about driving up cost...all based on the premise of Consumers Pay More.

Myb,the vision should be to make Msia an affordable place to live in.

  13. I agree that we should be using our own local talents to do business and economic models. We have enough of them and they definitely understand local conditions better.

Using foreign consultants is like giving them a million dollar watch and they will tell you what's the time.

The GLC company I am working at had gone through this experience 3 times now for the pat 10 years. Sad to say that we are still struggling with profitability despite the million dollars paid to the consultants. And one of them happened to be McKinsey!

  14. Dato Sak,

Slightly deviate from the topic to highlight on the new Talent Inc to attract 700000 Malaysian living abroad to come back and serve Malaysia.

Maybe the details are in the thick files and power ppt slides, but is the government admitting/insinuating that the present crops of local graduates are not good enough to take on his challenge to develop Malaysia? or is Malaysia is facing severe manpower shortage?

Government need to demonstrate the logic or perhaps the Consultants have taken over the mind of our elected reps that they are dependent on them to deliver performance like sportsman on steroid.

  19. Dear Sakmongkol

I see that many of your readers are asking you to lead by "turun padang". But you are such a dyed-in-the-wool UMNO supporter that the changes that you advocate cannot possibly see the light of day if you remain in UMNO. I know you THINK you can change UMNO, but you cannot because you are not sitting at the apex of the power structure. You can only scream at those leaders, but it is like barking at the mountain - nothing will change. There is a strong dynamic at work, a symbiotic relationship between big bad business a.k.a cronyism at work that benefits the cronies and the politicians and keeps UMNO/BN in power. This is obvious to all including you. So let's do something. A new party coalition is the answer. Country must come before party.

I beg to differ.WE dont need yet another party.Let dato sak remain in UMNO.I honestly believe that there are more dato sak's in UMNO.Sadly though they have been sidelined thru various ways of deceit.Nevertheless the challenge for dato Sak is to rally those very able men of UMNO to take that big step forward. This is because UMNO only listens to UMNO.Nothing less.

  21. Aduh mnyengat bangat, Bong. Bagus bangat.
To summarize for you, our beloved PM ni hangat, hangat tahi ayam.
Create one policy, leave it hanging. Create another, the same.
We are left to memorize all the NEM, NKR, or is there KERA? Very confusing.
What I am most unhappy about is the Talent Corp thing. We are going on a blitz to call home our so-called talented abroad.
Did I hear right? Hello. Normally its people searching for jobs, not jobs searching for the people.
We have 1000s of umemployed grads. We are gonna raise retirement age to 60 years (driftwoods will stay on which I don't agree).
Use all the talent resource we have in this country.
What's the point of spending billions to go after them and then pay then megabucks.
Whose are these people? Obviously they are not patriotic. They do not want to serve the country in the first place.
And I bet you some of them are JPA and MARA scholarship holders. Did not pay back and get carpet treatment.
    Adoi, DS Najib puleeze lah.
Your voters in Kamupung Almarhum and Rosmah's people in Kampung Jiboi are asking what's their due.

  23. Quiet Despair..someone must have told PM that the real talents are all working overseas..so guys who stays home are dumbos and not capable of translating PM lofty dreams into reality.

But these smart guys won't come back willy nilly..they need to be persuaded and given huge perks and incentives. But its worth it cos they will bring a new work culture of dynamic-ism and creativity.

I would agree that there are some brilliant guys out there and worthwhile to bring home but Msia have a penchant for creating molehills where only a leaf would be sufficient.I guess will win few votes if all else fail.

Wait for the influx of Jho Lows.

We're no longer in the age of smoke signals..we have this handy tool called internet..with google,YM,Skype..to name a few.

  27. dato sak,

despite all these slogans and grand economic plans, the BN govt and the Pakatan govt have both again and again missed the real work that they should be doing,

that is making quantum leaps for our existing BASIC SERVICES.

our public health care is still 70s mode, please feel free to visit our hospitals. they don't have the proper facilities to heal, let alone recuperate. look at the faces of doctors and nurses, they look more zombie then the patients they treat. its understaff and overworked. the system is breaking.

look at our security, the mushrooming of resident paid security enclaves. yes the people take peace-of-mind to their own hands. what about areas where people can't afford to pay?

there seems to be no real effort from this govt to reduce our cost of living. the ever increasing toll rates for our roads and our heavily taxed cars, these are all real economic yard stick for the people, again issues where this govt fail to understand.

education, do we still consider 12 straight As as everything in life? time for this govt to work in generating creative and expressive humans from our schools and colleges.

deceit, yes among the competing elite.
but to the rakyats, good healthcare, secure neighbourhood, quality education and better buying power are all they want.

do we then really need paid consultants?
