The Cuckoo’s Nest

The other proposal for a high-speed rail link connecting KL and Singapore is from a Barisan Nasional (BN) component party to form a special purpose vehicle with capital from some of its other partners in the ruling coalition.

Did I read this right was my first reaction? Political parties now forming SPVs to go into business to earn money? In the open? Have we gone mad? Throw out any sense of propriety; political parties are now openly revealing their true purpose of coming to power- conferring upon themselves a right to pillage the country.
Doesn't matter you called it a Swiss bid or not. When it comes to Malaysia, anything foreign brought in will be UMNOnised or Malaysianised or MCAcised (as in PKFZ) ir MICed in the case of whatever. The people? All will be circumcised.
Everyone knows that Gamuda or MMIC already contained large chunks of shares owned by political parties. Maybe Gamuda has the involvement of the Perak Royalty with some Chinamen as the prominent front man- but it has UMNO's interest there.
Why do you confine the whole thing to a Swiss bid? Because it's in the nature of the business? The one coming in, though unsolicited will be given the handicap? The 3rd one coming in is allowed in just for show purpose to give some sort of transparency and probity?
What happens when there is actually a 3rd bidder who comes in with a very low price? Will the government then exercise its authority and tells the original proposer to match the low price? What's stopping the government from inviting in just another friendly party with a 'losing' price bid just to show that the unsolicited proposal by the first bidder was done in a saintly manner?
It's time for the government to actually do what it claims it wants to do and give no more excuses to justify some special circumstances in order to carry out some magic show. What's all the mumbo jumbo about KRA, KPI, fight corruption, carry out good governance, transparency all that? Are we supposed to be comforted when the label Swiss is used? This isn't eating Swiss chocolate you know.
What's so special say about the development of the Sungai Besi airport that it was done almost in a hushed hushed manner? Or that the development of the RRI land in Sungai BUloh has already been predetermined.
So now, if high speed rail link project has already been 'pre-given' no sanitization hiding behind some fanciful terms such as Swiss Bid or what bid can hide the fact that it's all going the same style of daylight hand in the till.
Its better if we paraphrased Proudhon- Property is theft to Government tenders are theft! Or, i like this one:

Laws Tenders: We know what they are, and what they are worth! They are spider webs for the rich and mighty, steel chains for the poor and weak, fishing nets in the hands of the government.

  3. Dato,

Very disingenuous - PKFZ is/was MCAcised!

Surely someone with yr reach can/could realise long ago that PKFZ is big time UMNO scheme with an Ali-Baba front.

Just like; Renong in the past, PLUS currently & Ascot Sport a possible future? These r UMNO's erection war-chests, give-&-take some personal pocket money! No?

  4. AK 47,
I like this quote from you "Have we gone mad? Throw out any sense of propriety; political parties are now openly revealing their true purpose of coming to power- conferring upon themselves a right to pillage the country." I just wish to add that this is nothing new. Its been going on for a long time since Mahathir's time. The ultimate was done by Najib in his now notorious "You help me, I help you" election bribe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjhwupWIp7s&feature=related

He's got a ticket to ride. And he don't care.

And for us, come join the joy-ride, like the Three Dog Night song says.

  6. Our leaders trast us like idiots and all we do is bend over. Our PM is now selling the country piece by piece to the highest bidder. The best thing to do is to privatise this whole country and be done with it. Why do we need to unlock govt land banks when we still have so much land to develop? Why can`t we distribute the wealth? BTW if there is a need to built a high speed railway to Singapore is should be paid by the Singapore govt! They are the ones who`ll benefit the most from a bullet train - more Malaysians will work in the island city and commute, YTL will get another generous project from govt and screw us Malaysian in the process while white-washing with BS jargon. I@m so so dissapointed with the whole political process here in Malaysia. Better burn my UMNO membership card and live as a second class citizen in Timbuktu!

  7. The term Swiss Challenge is a practise developed in "less developed" nations due to the flexibility afforded by the unnumbered Swiss Bank Account i.e. who can give the most to the Acct wins the challenge.

Do we want to emulate that?
Btw..wats up at Ascot/BJ Corp?Is SC doing anything cos of the "misleading" info?

Or its another Swiss Challenge gone wrong?

The political party in question need lots of legal money in the war chest to stay in power.

Soon illegal funding will be dried up as the 'rakyat' are excellent secret agents and ombudsmen.

  10. The problem for PM Najib is he wants the country to move faster...but the machinery i.e GLCs,Govt Servants are not giving the best of ideas>>not coming out with the genuinely effective and workable proposals.

During PM Mahathir's era with his Malaysia Inc concept, the private sector was actually invited to propose and will be given "first come" advantage. This probably resulted in the so called "cronyism" but it got us moving forward.

Its costly to put forward a complete and sound proposal..the studies and documentation will probably cost millions. Thus project proponents will not invest in such project development costs if they're not assured of some preferential treatment.

But if you leave it to our GLCs and Govt Servants you will get "zero".And EPU,GLCs & the rest are managed by "Arts Stream" civil servants who will be severely challenged by complex maths such as 8 times 7 (except when it involves their remuneration).Whereas,to propose an Urban MRT project, one needs knowledge beyond 1+2.And there's no budget to appoint consultants for such mundane task of "thinking".

Consultants can only be appointed to produce glossy reports that can be launched by PM at a 6 Star Hotel.

So,PM NAjib have to find the formula fast..let it be Swiss,German,Budu..but we do badly need to move fwd,

  11. Dear Dato',
I won't worry too much about this revelation because the country simply does not have the money to finance these projects.
Excess funds in the banking sector is about RM 200 billion. They will not throw a quarter of that to finance these choo choo trains.

Perhaps Pemandu should have pointed this out to MCA and UMNO before the PM "mulls" these funny proposals.

If they are going to raise the funds in the international market, the indicative interest rate will be too high and the Government will spend money engaging the Investment Bankers only to shelve this project once the financing bill comes in.

As to the question, have we gone mad?

The answer is a resounding YES!

Put it this way, BN has to do it fast before Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka falls to PR.

But the way political parties are conjuring SPVs is beyond belief. Political party members must take action now to stop the rot...for the benefit of our future generation....

    Till then...G'nite M'sia...wherever u are...

  13. Bro,

I think that you should concentrate on exposing some double faced agents in UMNO that is working towards making the community hate UMNO more when in fact they are really the supporters of the opposition.

It's a miracle that non of the Israeli commandos was killed by the so called terrorists.

Your a prime example of people who make others hate BN more. You and the other bloggers who are "sewaktu dengan mu."

  16. Governing the country in a competent manner is not of importance to the BN component partners.

Their primary objective is to make money. Why have private enterprise when politicians can be both creators of wealth and holders of political power. As it is, most projects carry 10-30% political involvement as their cut for endorsing and approving the project.

BN is so out of touch with reality. This morning's revelations truly takes the cake.

  17. They are a bunch of unrepentent bastard out to screw us again and again. But we also have many among us who will continue to vote for these bunch of crooks. I just can't get it why they can still vote for UMNO/BN unless they are crooks in the same pool.

  18. Just mortgage the whole country to UK, and then we are a colony again. There will be no more argument of using English or BM to teach Maths & Science, no more controversy between Federal court or Syariah court rulings, no more the weird "dengan izin" type of speech delivery in Parliament. We only kow tow to hte Mat Salleh and all are equal as 2nd class citizens. We are par excellence with Singapore in due course.

    You like this idea, Dato?

    AK47,
    Why do you say 'now'?

It has always been that way since Mahathir became PM.
UMNO can do any damn thing in the open and with impunity, even murder, and nothing will happen to them.

  23. Dato',
More people will take the bullet train to Spore and then fly out to overseas destination from there. MAS and KLIA will definitely suffer due to reduced business. A good way to cripple the country's economy after making hefty profit from the building of the speed train fascilities.
