Selamat Cari Makan, Rais Yatim

The decision by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture to take out advertisements in various MSM papers was highly unprecedented. They of course exposed the balding stupidity of the minister who has a penchant for burning bridges and changing mode and at once give new meaning to the term sycophantic groveling.
I mean, it's a sad spectacle to see an out-of-age group person having to bend backwards and is always seeking to find ways in making the boss thinks he is relevant. Many many years ago, when he was a leading member of Parti Semangat 46 and was hanging by the financial coattails of Tengku Razaleigh, he went on TV to accuse Rahmah Othman a former minister, as having prostituted herself. Well today, the same description comes back to haunt not Rahmah Othman, but the minister himself. He doesn't know it yet, but he is being called Doctor Pimp.
This is precisely the behavior by UMNO leadership that causes it to be estranged further from the Malay base. It was the reason why in 2008, more Malays did not vote for UMNO candidates. The people are just fed up of leadership by arrogance that has permeated every sinew and bone of UMNO politics.
The advertisements carried out exposed more than what they intended- revealing that all this time, UMNO as leader of the government of the day, manages this country's assets and resources on the basis of political expediencies. It governs not on the basis of what is right, but on the plusses and minusses of political opportunism.
As a result, it places whole people at ransom and at the mercy of the government who continues ruling with the old school ideology, which holds that the future and welfare of a whole group of people depend on its benevolence. This is precisely the ideology that stunts the mental development of Malays rather than uplifts them.
People are just fed up with the self proclaimed manifest destiny of people like Rais Yatim who behaved as though Malaysians, Malays and non Malays alike; owe him and this government their living. Further in doing so, people are expected to tolerate and accommodate stupidities, bullying and so forth as necessary evils. He and his like minded friends are greatly mistaken.
They do to some extent but not without demanding this government or any government for that matter qualifies itself to have earned the approval of the people.
How so or on what terms? Rais Yatim and the relics in UMNO belonged to the group of leadership that fights on values that are no longer relevant today. These values include raw an unqualified Malay interests, of things couched in language more suitable to take on colonialism which is nonexistent today.
Today's values that motivate the people of Malaysia have everything to do with- doing what is right, with good governance, with stemming corruption and crushing inefficiencies and kicking out bully tactics of any government. A government failing to recognize new values and priorities demanded by people is going to lose relevance.
The contradictions unintentionally exposed by such old tech instruments of communications are amply written elsewhere. I shall not repeat them here. The advertisements display nothing but crude bully tactics that has become hallmarks of people like Rais Yatim.

  1. But Dato, he reports to PM Najib. So PM Najib shuld also take responsibility that is if he wants to do "the right thing". And you should also reprimand PM Najib if he does not "do the right thing" regardless whether he is your division head or not.Boleh?

  3. Salam Datuk.

I think UMNO will never reform. I just cannot comprehend the kind of stupidity UMNO ministers and law makers are portraying day in, day out. It is very shameful, for I am still a Malay by birth and hence this feeling of sheer humiliation. I attended a seminar once in KL on branding, officiated by the Nazri Aziz in his capacity as a minister in charge of TAXI PERMITS. He was a complete moron and the day was saved by a dashing and eloquent Datuk Jamaluddin Ibrahim of the then Maxis. I was amongst a handful in a sea of non-Malays participants and hence my extreme embarrassment!

All these UMNO goons should be shown the door or else the country will be in utter ruin! Alas, you are amongst these idiots! What say you Datuk?

  5. Dato Sak,

What is hope for this beloved country of ours to progress beyond politics of rhetoric. As people ventures beyond shores of Malaysia, it may be apparent that we may be 1 step forward in one area but many steps backward in this department. Good example is our Malaysian soccer

  6. Got the hidden message but sometimes people cannot read between the lines esp the FLCE UMNO members. Because of this, we have to occassionally be "politely" blunt in our writings/action in order to do "the right thing" and to attract attention. No? You once said, the fish rots at the head first.

  7. 'leadership by arrogance'...I couldn't have put it better. This phrase succinctly describes UMNO's leadership style. They have become arrogant.

Politicians often change their stand like a chameleon changes color. When S46 was formed, Rais and others deserted UMNO because it no longer imbibed the spirit that was in the party when it was formed in 1946 (hence the name of the new party, Semangat 46 was to show that those who left UMNO had that kind of spirit). It was a spirit of consensus, cooperation, mutual respect, caring for the welfare of the Malays and Malaysians in general.

Thus when S46 disbanded and its members (like Rais) rejoined UMNO, it should be assumed that the original spirit has returned to UMNO. But do you see such a spirit in UMNO today? NO. Instead, the spirit in UMNO today is arrogance, bullying, patronizing, selfishness, deception etc.

At least Ku Li dares to speak out against the wrongs of UMNO. But Rais and all other ex-S46 members only kowtow to Najib and UMNO.

  9. Rais is a shameless chameleon. He will bend in any direction just to remain in the cabinet.
Didn't he say he has burnt the bridges with UMNO when he was in Semangat 46?
    Didn't he condemn the ISA?
This man is better dead than alive.

  12. Honestly Dato I am at lost of this hidden message business.

I am a Selangor UMNO grassroot out of structure activist. At times I sincerely thought UMNO had learned their lesson but then often than not I think I may not be right at all.

    No?

Is it possible for us to ask for other Ketua Perhubungan Negeri or just pretend that we have one which is also out of structure?

With Pekan, Pagoh, Semberong, Bagan Datok and Semporna leading the party, what hope do we UMNO members in the political tsunami epicenter of Klang Valley have to reposition ourselves in order to regain rakyat's trust?

  16. Agree with Anon 15.44 an 15.48.

"Doing the right thing" - yes Dato Sak, some UMNO people knows what are the right things to do especially the intelligent one including yourself. But sincerely, how many UMNO politicians dare to say it outright? Reasons is simple - they are all "cari makan" - no sincerity.

They toe the lines because of "cari makan" not because of wanting to do things right. They believe "rezeki" is given by PM and UMNO/Govt leaders. We must drum into their heads that "rezeki" comes from God through the application of knowledge, common sense and hard work.

There is no UMNO in Japan, America or Europe but they are successful through application of knowledge and hardwork and also,to us believers, by grace of GOD.

So, any sane UMNO people should not be scared of "doing the right thing" for fear of "susah cari makan". I ragard Mustapha Mohamad as an intelligent/capable minister but sad to say, he is "not doing the right thing". He is just toeing the lines for "cari makan".

The moment PM Najib change his position (if ever) and decided to pay the Kelantan state govt the 5% money, I bet my bottom dollar that he and Awang Adek will sing like a canary praising PM Najib. Again "cari makan" or or is it hypocrisy?

This is UMNO politics for you. This type of politics/behaviour, which has become a culture in UMNO, will ultimately bring our beloved country down together with the future of our children and grand-children.

UMNO needs sincere leaders within its rank that can stand up without fear or favour and respect rule of law. Though not perfect, Ku Li fit in nicely. Najib could not match him in almost all areas.

I really pity Rais as he was the man whom I looked up to during his days in Semangat 46. I finished reading his published Phd thesis in one week and I refer to it extensively in my thesis. But sadly, while his former boss still holding to the principle strongly, Rais has betrayed whatever he has written and preached, just to please his current boss & UMNO.

  19. Mr Yeap,

I feel sorry for you for having diligently used Rais Yatim's Thesis for your work. A thesis is only as good as the person who wrote it. He did not write it in pursuance of knowledge and scholarly conduct but rather to use it to resell himself to UMNO. But at least he is better than those in UMNO who bought their PhDs.

  21. Yes, Rais Yatim is a Semangat 46 turncoat against Mahathir who once wrote a thesis for his Kings College London PhD arguing against the ISA.

When he became Minister in AAB's (wooden) Cabinet, he said like many UMNO/BN Ministers do, that there was no conflict between his private opinions (since when was a PhD dissertation a private document) and public position!!??

That would be like Don Corleone saying his position as thieving head of the Mafia was not in conflict with that of running for the Mayor's office!!

It's clear that many in M'sia, including some in the Opposition, seriously believe that personal integrity is not a requisite for a political position, especially one that bilks the taxpayer!

  27. Dear Tok Sak,
Tetapi saya rasa Dato' Rais ni dah lain dah tak seperti dulu...

I am not a Singaporean but it always amazes me that the Josef Goebbels in UMNO are so good in their task that the weak and uninformed are soaked to the bones with their Anti-Singapore propaganda. To my observation, the reason why that tiny republic is so successful is because it is always too busy governing its shores and doing what is best for its people as contrast to its neighbours who spend 24/7 bickering on kitchen politics, standing on a platform of envy. jeoulosy and blame gaming
    Unbelievable!!

  37. To prove that Najib is sincere, he should now "do the right thing" i.e pay the Kelantan govt the money. Otherwise he will do more damage especially after the stupid advertisement and its subsequent rebuttal by Ku Li.

Advertise in "akhbar Melayu" to influence the rural, less educated and less technologically savy Malays, but these jokers forgot about the potent effect of new media - blogs, sms, facebook, tweeters etc.

Any UMNO leaders (apart from Ku Li) dare to openly tell or advise Najib to pay up the money to the state govt? I bet no one will, because semua "cari makan & jaga periuk nasi". Politics of patronage = UMNO.

This is the reality of UMNO politics today. It is never about doing "the right thing" for the benefit of the nation. Mana ada reform? Cakap tak serupa bikin. A bunch of hypocrites. No, UMNO will not reform.

All those in TEAM B, came back to UMNO eventually. Ibrahim Ali was the exception. Flexible but not principled politician.Anwar was/is the common enemy besides Mahathir.
Now, i wonder why it took his twilight years for KU Li to tell his side of the Petroleum Act 1974. What happened to his conscience all these years ? So there you are. He kept his silence since 1974 to speak for the people of Kelantan.Truth and justice delayed is indeed justice denied. Is he going to say more about Bank Bumi, Lorain Esmie Osman, London Metal EXchange...etc ? Najib was in his napkins when Ku Li was serving his father's cabinet but he is smart to checkmate Ku Li by retaining Rais Yatim . No love lost, i suppose.

Or is it the intention to confuse the people?
PAS govt and Ku Li have spoken.
Let the Kelantanese be the judge.
    Others just shut up.
Is he doing it on his own acord to bodek or is he carring out orders?
Before agreeing to be budak suruhan, he should have mulled it over, whether it is wise to do so.
And he thinks he is an intellectual.
Most times he is like nasi tambah, kuah tambah.
Letih dengar dia cakap satu butir satu butir.
    Rais has passed his shelf-life.
    He belongs to the archives.
    Enough already.
Bet you, after this there will be a blitz of damage-control.
Once again he will shoot his mouth.
Time for Umno to have a think-tank to deal with issues.
Dont allow each and every politician to just comment about all and sundry.

  42. This turncoat of a Malay PhD genius is another example of the UMNOputras who will bend over backwards even if it means destroying their crediblity and intergrity just to suck up to the executive of the day. PATRONAGE as in Mahathirism.

This is the same Rais Yatim who opposed Mahathir and lambasted Mahathir and UMNO when he was aligned to Semangat 46.

This gutter politician has no intergrity and has stooped so low as to perpetuate the myth of 'wang ihsan' as opposed to the legitimate royalty for oil to Kelantan.

The evil mamak coined such a term to deprive the Kelantanese as well as the people of Trengganu to punish them for voting against UMNO/BN. The mamak is the very devil in disguise. Why are the Malays especially the UMNO Malays so blind to follow an ungrateful son born of an Indian immigrant from Kerala?

The likes of Rais Yatim, LLS, LKY, Samy gave in to mamak's demand and created an ogre who believes he is still relevant to Malaysians. During his time he was NEVER the PM of all Malaysians. He was just a kampung jaguh for the UMNOputras and the lapdogs in BN. His only claim to being a global leader was his hatred for everything West, so his socalled 'look east policy'.

I won't be surprised if Pakatan Rakyat is on the verge of stepping into Putra Jaya, Rais Yatim would be the first UMNO minister to do a frog jump as the Jelapang prostitute.

Prostitution and the penchant for sodomy comes very naturally to UMNOputras and some low lives in the BN.

  43. Spot-on mauriyall.

This half mamak thought that UMNO belongs to him because his membership No. is 000001 and the UMNO baru was created by him.

When he don't like Pak Lah (more of Khairy actually), he attacked him mercilessly. Nobody in UMNO have balls to support Pak Lah who was then trying to dismantle some of his stupid legacy.

UMNO should have sacked him from the party then like they did to Zaid Ibrahim. But nobody dare to say anything as most of them are corrupt and this half mamak have all their secrets in his pockets. No prize for guessing why he can criticize UMNO leaders with impunity.

He left and rejoin UMNO as and when he likes. He must have thought that UMNO is his grandfather's party even though no Malays were in Kerala then. And yet many Malays were taken for a ride by him.

After Pak Lah left, UMNO leaders welcome him back with arms wide open. They actually forgot that during 22 years of his rule (especially after 1988 when many of those who are critical of him were sidelined after his UMNO Baru was formed), he has done more damage than good.

The consequence is beginning to appear now. Just look at the current bad UMNO culture (money politics, patronage, cari makan etc..etc), deteriorating race relations and economy, rampant human rights abuse and corruption, leakages and wastages.

There is absolutely no reason, in my mind, that we cannot be better and richer than Spore now(as we are blessed with educated human capital and blessed with rich natural resources with a relatively small population) had he managed the country effectively and sincerely....sigh. My fellow Malays....pls put on your thinking cap and.....THINK what went wrong and change our mindset if we are to prosper and be successful.
