A Parent's Proud Day

Tuesday the 30th of December 2008, is the day the PMR results came out. In the olden days, it used to be known as LCE( for English medium) or SRP( Malay medium). Many of you will remember those days. You are considered brilliant if you have a few distinctions and the lowest of aggregates. An aggregate of 5 means, you have 5 A1’s. These days, getting at least 5 A’s is a common occurrence. Our boys and girls compete in getting as may A’s as possible.

Our youngest boy in the family, Harris sat for the PMR this year. He has been studying conscientiously. He is also the lebai of the family. He is meticulous over observing the mandatory solats of the day. He would get terribly upset if doesn’t pray on time.

Today when the results came out, he wasn’t that anxious to be the early bird to school. So Mamasita and I went for breakfast, telling him we would fetch him and then go to school to get his results.

At around 11 am, we came back to the house to fetch him. His older brothers, Hakim and Seth wanted to follow too. Hakim is back for a short holiday from Liverpool where he works as a software engineer. Seth is waiting for his SPM results.

We arrived at the school but did not see a large crowd of students waiting for results. Then we just remembered that it is almost 12 and that most of the students had already taken their results. So the three brothers alighted from our car and made their way to the office. Only then did we notice , Harris was a bit anxious. He walked diffidently towards the office. That brought a chuckle from Mamasita, but after a few minutes, I think, the excitement got the better of her. She got out of the car and walked towards the school office.

After a few minutes, she rang me on my mobile phone. I could hear her exclaiming excitedly- Ariff.!.he got straight A’s. I could only respond by saying syukur….

Then they left the office and walked towards the car. I had my camera with me which is now my practice so that I can record events that I may use as material in my blog.

And so, here are some photographs, showing the proud mother and father.

The proud mother, brothers and Harris.

The Equally proud father, brothers and Harris.

We savoured each moment going over the grades on the results script. I cannot find the words to describe the feeling of seeing all A’s against each subject. To make sure, we counted to verify. There were indeed 8 A’s. Yes, our son did us proud today. He has made all in the family proud. To our youngest boy, Harris, we say, congratulations and praise be to Allah. He came forward to hug me and said thank you. He hugged Mamasita and said thank you too.

We are very sure, all over the country, there are very many proud parents celebrating the success of their children. Their children’s success is also theirs to savour. To all proud parents, we congratulate them too. To the other parents, if the children’s results were not as sterling as expected, we say, don’t despair. The PMR is just the beginning of our children’s long journey. We have to accompany them as far as possible.

Next year, our youngest who is a girl, will sit for her PMR. She must now try to equal Harris’s achievement. An older sister, will be sitting for her SPM. I pray, that as parents, Mamasita and I will be equal to our responsibility. I think it was James Agee who said this:-

"In every child who is born, no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again: and in him, too, once more, and of each of us, our terrific responsibility toward human life; toward the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of terror, and of God."

My sincere congratulations to Harris. I also want to congratulate you and Mamasita. I know most people, my brother included, will say that, as parents they didn't do anything and that all the effort was the child's.

But parents always deserve the congratulations for the nurturing, care, comfort, security, values and environment that they created for the child. Now, THAT is what I am congratulating you and mamasita for - solid parental care and guidance.

  3. Salam Dato' Sak,

Children are the most precious gift from Allah. They make us see the wisdom fo living. As we grow older, they are the living proof of our existence in this world.

Like what Harris did, they give us the kind of joy and happiness way beyond comparison to any precious gem on earth.

Well Dato', I'm not in the position to say this considering I'm at younger age. But can't help to share my experience. My life suddenly changed for betterment after my son was born.

    Wassalam.

  6. Dato, now u r getting this Apek all misty eyes & sentimental, this one for all of youse; WELL DONE!

I believe the children are our future,
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

    Everybody searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone who fulfilled my needs
A lonely place to be, and so I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I failed, if I succeed, at least I lived as I believed.
No matter what they take from me they can't take away my dignity

Because the greatest love of all is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all inside of me

    The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve learning to love yourself,
it is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride
    To make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

    I decided long ago
Never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believed
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity

Because the greatest love of all
    Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all inside of me.

    The greatest love of all
    Is easy to achieve
    Learning to love yourself,
It is the greatest love of all

And if by chance that special place
    That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
    Find your strength in love.

    There goes my macho image!

  9. Congrats to Dato Sak and family. Surely there'll be another round of celebration when the SPM result is announced.

In your earlier article, you said "Harris did his PMR and hopefully he to will go to a boarding school like Seth."

Curious as to why it is the norm for Malay parents to want to send their children away from home during their teenage years? Or does that imply that the local secondary school does not cut it? I hope the good Dato wouldn't mind sharing with us your views on education in this context.

  10. Excuse me, dato;

Al Nimr, don’t play play with this Apek, ok? You can sink both your ‘claws’ into both my nipples & string me up a tree like Richard Harris in ‘A Man call horse’, & I’ll still come out biasa only. They don’t make touch macho gentlemen like that nowadays.

Hey that’s one of my fav karaoke song after “Have I told you lately’. I can’t wait to get Down on the corner’ with sak to belt out his CCR favourites ‘Proud Mary’ & ‘Fortunate Son’ or his old time fav; ‘Have u seen the rain’., i.e. with Mamasita permission first lah. OK or not? Don’t worry, we’ll post them in u-tube too!

    Cheers,
    Unker Tommy

Keep it up Harris & to you both parents, break your backs to provide them that sound education & enjoy them as they move up each rung of the ladder, accomplishing and succeeding in all their endeavours! Happy New Year to all of you !

  12. Congratulations. Well done.

Dato Sak, the 8 A's reflect the academic prowess of your son. From your writings, I feel that he will also be graded A's in charactor and conduct of his life.
    Congratulations again.

  13. I echo what Navi wrote. Good parents, smart children, promise of tomorrow's Malaysia, future leaders of the country!

I am glad this hurdle is also over for mine; still chuckling over her asking me the week before it started about 'Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde' (one of the books they had to read). Glad it wasn't 'Sherlock Holmes'. Otherwise kena send telegram to Kuantan to minta bantuan sikit.

    Congratulations, Sakmongkol and Mamasita!

  14. Salam Dato' & Mamasita,

Bright children come from loving and supportive family. You and Mamasita obviously supersede the rest in providing that environment to all of your clever children.

    Congratulations.

18 years ago, I brought the same smiles on my parents face (the one you and mamasita have on the photos) when I aced all my subjects in SRP. It was a very happy day.

Nowadays, all my cousins are busy trying to meet the benchmark I set, and they apparently aced all of theirs as well. Bright bright children, huh?

What a trip down the memory lane.

    To Ariff, well done boy!

    Congrats to Harris!

Looks like there will be an all MRSM-schooled cousins association from now on.

    Congrats again!

  17. My heartiest congratulations to Harris.

I hold to the principal that every child is like a raw gemstone. Besides teachers, parents play a vital role to carefully 'cut and polish' it until it becomes a precious gemstone. For that both Dato Sak & Datin Mamasita have successfully produced a gemstone in Harris.

Btw I reckon Mamasita is a better cameraperson vs you Sak. Somehow ladies are more meticulous. Close shot looks better. [Just pulling your leg Sak, jangan marah ya!]

Taking this opportunity to wishing you, mamasita & all at home, de minimis, walla and all your followers a Happy New Year. May 2009 bring Joy & Happiness, Good Health and Prosperity!

  18. Salam Dato.

Tahniah buat Harris.

    Congratulations again.

    Terima kasih. Wassalam.

  20. Congrats to Harris and the proud parents. You are blessed with a clever son and a 'lebai' too.

Every time exam results are out, it will remind me of my time long, long time ago when it's still SRP. My late father's a man of few words. He didn't say much when he saw my results but the smile that I saw on his' and mum's face is precious enough for me.
