Garrison Keillor Types

dedicated to all those Garrison-Keillor fans. You know who you are. Haha.

  1. thank you, tok sak...

    especially for "Thanks"!

what could be more apt than being alerted to this delightful poem, surely a vintage garrison keillor, on the eve of thanksgiving day.

i've listened to it four times already (at u-tube). :D

here, let me repro what i jotted for those who, like me, are dotty about witty well-turned verses...

    Thanks!

    I'm thankful for ATM machines,
and for the smell of coffee beans.
For the dishwasher and for the GPS,
thought up by the Pentagon with great success.
That makes it unnecessary for us men
to ever need to ask for directions again.
I'm thankful for macaroni and cheese.
Of mac and cheese, i have only good memories.
Boil water and put the macaroni in it,
it's a very nice meal in about ten minutes.
And speaking of food of low status,
thank you for instant mashed potatoes.
Which is simply dehydrated potato flakes,
mashed potatoes in one-tenth the time it takes
to boil one and whip it up nice and smooth.
And if you want to know the absolute truth -
that dry organic peanut butter, i hate it!
I like the kind with sugar and fat - saturated!
And for the US Postal Service, i say thanks!
Delivering mail from Florida to Fairbanks.
I'm grateful for blogs and other new media.
And of course for the miraculous Wikepedia,
which puts information at your fingertips,
an innovation as great as sailing ships,
or putting a steam engine on the rails.
So thank you Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales.
And thank you Larry Page and Sergey Brin,
who in 1997 launched a search engine,
Google -- which simply is superb,
a noun that quickly became a verb.

  2. Hey Mekyam,

Don't I know you from somewhere?

Wish I had thought up of something like GOOGLE...sigh...then I would never ever have to resort to macaroni and cheese again on those lazy days and just get my personal chef to whip me and kids up some REAL mashed potatoes and steak.

  3. Just a short note of appreciation, fellow Sakmongkolanders - lunch hour now. No macaroni I'm afraid, just a capati (crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside) with high-grease mutton curry and a glass of teh tarik to wash it down.

Howard Stern I've heard of and heard but I confess Garrison Keilor is somebody new. Thanks for the lead and especially Mekyam for taking trouble to reproduce the poem.

Tsk, tsk must get out of my tempurung more often. What would my old tutor Mr Atkinson MA (Oxon) say?

  9. Hi Mekyam,
Yea, I've always enjoyed Rowan Atkinson in his various guises, Monty Python and Peter Sellers. absolutely hilarious.

Thank God for Youtube. Now we can get our laughs easily. used to be a time I had to read newspaper reports on our Parliament to get a chuckle.

LOL! and we say our duly elected don't try to make us happy? ;D

but you are so right about youtube. garrison keillor forgot it in his "Thanks!".

    i'll tag my own then...

"Thanks too for YouTube which Google bought.
Now video-viewing online is free from fraught."

p.s. it's really nice of tok sak to give us this corner of his platform to chat on things other than politics. v politic of him, yah? :D

  13. hahaha, good to have teacher's pet in the class. :D

tin, apocryphalist wrote a very clever description of GK (garrison keillor) in tok sak's thread "Islam the orphaned religion?". you can also read about GK in wikipedia.

he's extremely funny, but he's not a movie star like peter sellers or rowan atkinson. he's one of USA's top radio personalities.

his humour is very american social-cultural specific and, quite atypical of mat-yank comics, is rather subtle. he makes comments about commonplace american things in an uncommon way, i'd say. :D
