Mahathirism goes to Yemen

I am using the same title as did Din Merican for this article. The similarities end there as the intent of this article differs.
The man who can walk on water has been invited to Yemen. Yemen wants to learn the secrets of unlocking value from Dr Mahathir. It has been described as Mahathirism goes to Yemen.  I can only offer sympathies to those who are jumping up and down joyfully thinking Yemen will be saved.
Mahathir will find himself like fish out of water. If the man leading Yemen has similar characteristics like Mahathir, then Yemen stands a chance. If it has oil, minerals, oil palm, rubber- then Mahathir can apply his magic. Mahathir can function iff ( the economist’s way of saying if and only if)  there are two preconditions- a political system where power is concentrated in the hands of a few. If it is in the hands of one man, the better. The other precondition is- Yemen must rid itself of any romance with organic growth of its indigenous people. Mahathir works best if the system allows for cronyism.
Yemen is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the Arab World. It has very small oil reserves and depends heavily on the oil it produces. Its government receives the vast majority of its revenue from oil taxes. Here is where Dr Mahathir can probably work his magic best. Mahathir has direct experience with what to do with oil revenues having 'managed' PETRONAS directly. Under him PETRONAS has bought over MISC, bailed out Mirzan’s business and saved a bank.  Needless to say, he will advise the Yemeni leader of similar strategies.
But when the oil reserves are depleted by 2017, things will be different. It would possibly lead to economic collapse.  It can probably save itself by depending on the large proven reserves of natural gas.  Yemen's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant began production in October 2009. Maybe Mahathir can use his Japanese connections to secure enlarged markets for Yemeni oil.
But there’s a another aspect of Yemeni life which Mahathir is perhaps the most qualified to advise. How to humanize rampant corruption. How to disguise it to make corruption looks like a favour to the Yemeni people.
Will Mahathir advise the Yemeni government to debunk the economic programs set up by his bête noir, the IMF?  The Yemeni government made an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to implement a structural adjustment program. Phase one of the program included major financial and monetary reforms, including floating the currency, reducing the budget deficit, and cutting subsidies. Phase two will address structural issues such as civil service reform.
As early as 1995, the government of Yemen launched its own version of ETP. In Yemen it’s called EFARP (Economic, Financial, and Administrative Reform Program). It was designed by the World Bank and the IMF, as well as international donors. The poorest of the Arab country had its own ETP as far back as in 1995. Here, the much ballyhooed ETP was launched by Najib and he has made it looked like we owe him the world.
In 1997, IMF and the Yemeni government began medium-term economic reform programs under the Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility (ESAF) and Extended Fund Facility (EFF). This program aimed to reduce dependence on the oil sector and to establish a market environment for real non-oil GDP growth and investment in the non-oil sector. Increasing the growth rate in the non-oil sector was one of the government's most important objectives. Programs also focused on reducing unemployment, strengthening the social safety net, and increasing financial stability.
To achieve these reforms, the government and IMF implemented containment of government wages, improvements in revenue collection with the introduction of reforms in tax administration, and a sharp reduction in subsidies bills through increased prices on subsidized goods. As a result, the fiscal cash deficit was reduced from 16% of GDP in 1994 to 0.9% in 1997.
So Mahathir goes to Yemen, he will see what Najib is trying to do, is something copied from the poorest of Arab countries. Here, the ETP, the GTP and a mélange of acronyms were hailed as some sort of godsend and Najib the copycat, in turn hailed as the new messiah.
To understand what it is that Mahathir wants to bring to Yemen, we must understand what Mahathirism is. It’s the application of Mahathir’s thinking on matters of state. What it is, only Mahathir knows and unless he has also confided in God, then God also knows.
But we can identify its main tenets. Applied to politics it’s the concentration of power in the hands of a few people. When UMNO 1946 was made illegal, Mahathir found himself without a party. He ceased also to become chairman of BN. so how can a man, during that interlude still remain a PM without a political party? In the history of politics only an outright dictator does not require a political party to become head of state. Or the Monarch in a Monarchy.
Mahathir found his elixir for political longevity when UMNO 46 was declared illegal.  The illegality of UMNO 46, gave Mahathir new lessons on how to run the country. He didn’t want to use any legal provisions available or any prerogative available to revive the old UMNO. Because to do so would result in a reelection which could very well see him forced into retirement.
What he learnt from the episode was that he could rule without being fettered by the niceties of democratic tenets. That brief interlude during which Mahathir was without a political party taught Mahathir that he could become a dictator in a totalitarian state. He then sets out to carve out the new politics of Malaysia that has become known as Mahathirism- totalitarianism disguised behind the masks of democracy.
Ling Liong Sik was asked to chair that meeting to reinstate Mahathir as chairman of Barisan Nasional, so that Mahathir could still become PM. You see, Mahathir wasn’t interested in UMNO. After Ling Liong Sik, his lapdog did what he was told; Mahathir formed a new pliant party full of half past six fellows in a new UMNO. That new UMNO became a tool serving to legitimize Mahathir’s vision.
Applied to economics, its cronyism. The parceling out of revenue earning assets and licenses to the select few. These few will serve as the umbrellas beneath with lesser mortals seek succor.
When Mahathir took over Malaysia it signaled the end of organic growth of Malay economics. Mahathir doesn’t believe in organic growth- he wants everything fast. He wants to jump-start. He wants to bypass. So, in came a few advisors among them was of course the wily Daim Zainudin who came up with the idea of selecting winners. Organic growth is too slow to achieve the targets of the NEP.
The 30% quota and requirements were quickly replaced by the Mahathirnomics strategy of blitzkrieging the economy. This was done by choosing a few running dogs to spearhead the Malay economy. Out goes the 30% organic growth method- in came the closed tender system, the direct negotiations style and other forms of piratization of the Malaysian economy by some selected buccaneers.
So what is Mahathirism? It was the Mahathir way to (1) destroy a legitimate democratic political party and ( 2) the economics of cronyism- privatization of profits and sharing the costs with the public.
So good luck to the Yemeni government.

  2. One has to wonder why the Yemenis are even contemplating inviting mahathir in the first place? Do Yemenis lack individuals who are fervent egoist, selfish, greedy and above all willing to do everything under the sun to get what he wants including illegal and immoral things? Well if that's the case then the Yemenis poor masses must be trill seekers or at least suicidal for staying silent!

With mahathirnomics proven to be literally "the poor man's weapon of mass but slow destruction" in which it ultimately destroy the masses of "poor men" in favor of the ruling elites and the rich (in Malaysia where it is actively practiced), the Yemenis ruling elites must be in the same league as Mahathir and his beloved UMNO Baru. In the same league in which I mean that they absolutely control every facet and everything in Yemen even to the extent of the nation's sexual preference and perversion.

Nothing even comes close to Mahathirism in popularizing sodomy and pornography as the driving force and main political issue of a nation or even as a perverse racial tool of unity. For over 3 decades, the issue of sodomy and government sanctioned porn peddling became the main stay of Malaysian politic, it's perplexing that another "islamic states" sees it fit to apply the same "the end justifies the means" dogma (even though the means most of the time is blatantly against and trample islamic laws and values) for use in solving it's economic and indirectly it's political insecurities and woes. Either we are totally wrong about mahathir and his Mahathrism or the whole region of the so called "islamic nation" are so messed up that it couldn't see the forest for the trees" just like what we were just a few years before.

Personally, I feel sorry for the Yemenis masses for they truly did not know what they are getting themselves into. Maybe we can expect another massive foreign currency gambling scandal or even a new but grander "cows and condos" scandal from the land of the Arabs. Or maybe a bigger and more sexually explosive (pun intended) "un-submersible" submarine purchase scandals. Time will only tell and maybe by then we can offer the Yemenis, the remedy for mahathirism provided that we could kick UMNO and BN's ass in the next GE! Isn't it time yet for ABU? By GOD, YES!

    Nick.

  3. Honestly my symphathy to Arab & Yemeni friends for having Mahathir in their neighbourhood.

They did not get it Mahathir did the same things they did only less because he did not have as much oil - thanks goodness.

We should be thankful to them for opening up Malaysian eyes to what is wrong with Mahathir thinking like them - EVEN with high growth driven by oil they have persistent high unemployment and income gap worst than us - with foreigners running wild in their land..

Lets pray they keep Mahathir over there so he does not come back to do worst here..

  5. He has little knowledge of running a proper economy and country...but can talk.

As long he has fame, he spent until there is no tomorrow to make everyone happy.

He experiment with us and create a huge mess for generations to come just to enrich a few...but the Yemenis will benefit at our expense.

Still a " hero " in the eyes of many, in particular the Malays.

  6. Mahathir said that he did not fear imprisonment if the opposition to rule the country. But he was concerned that opposition would make accusations and false claims against him. Actually Mahathir now is haunted by his own sins when he was a PM. He felt anxious and scared due to the past mistakes and wrong doings.

No need for us to refer to various cases of corruption, embezzlement and bail out the duit rakyat for the benefit of his children and cronies during his reign. But majority Malaysians until today can not forget what Mahathir did to his deputy Anwar Ibrahim. People could not have forgotten how Mahathir and the regime has raped legal institutions, courts and police in Anwar's sodomy I case and many other cases.

Mahathir is now at the end of the age. It is unfortunate if the Yemeni take this man as an economic adviser, he is not only too old but already senile as well as having behavior and bad history.

    Tun Mahathir!,

Actual time for you to harvest the results of your efforts will come eventually. I'm sure you understand the law of karma. Pray a lot more and repent before its too late. Allah is the wisest fairly judger. If you believe that you obey the command of God for this, why be afraid?. Continuing your political enemies, especially against Anwar Ibrahim will only increase the punishment in your life. Believe it! You will not be able to resist the power and promise of Allah. The attitude of your stubbornness will only punish yourself, not Anwar!

  9. Dearly beloved blog host Pak Yeh

Yeh, yeh, yeh. I am one of those among many who sent congratulatory message to our hero Tun M for the appointment.
Still and always be our hero for ever more.
It's no mean feat you know. Still recognized as a world leader who can turn the economy of strife-torn Yemen.
Still lucid at age 87 while others have joined the old men club in the sky. Some of his age are in wheel chairs with rheumy eyes and non-stop drool.
Here we go vilifying him. He's toasted and feted in Sanaa conferring with the politicos, kapitans of industry and world bank officials.
I see that certain Anu green with envy. Special Economics Advisor to Selangor is as far as he can get.
And that too in name only. Don't know much about economy. Can't even get his math right on the numbers he needed to get to Putra Jaya.
Sure you agree with me on this, Sak.
We ain't seen nothing yet. With a private jet at his disposal, our statesman can be here and there.
He will busy helping Najib to win the 2/3 majority for BN.
And usually, what Mahathir wants Mahathir gets.
God bless you Tun and our beloved nation which is on the verge of prosperity with the coming victory of BN.

P.S. Blog Shakespeare Walla. Not writing an Ode to Mahathir. Sure you can do better than penning a tableau in the last posting worthy of Bangsawan Di Udara.

Yemen is just going Kazakhstan way.

Prez Nursultan Nasabayaev is doing mahathirism very well if not the student is happily outdoing the master.

They cannot see it yet perhaps but Yemen and Kazakhstan will soon discover Mahathir's will be as Marcos', Ceauşescu's, Suharto's and Mubarak's.

  11. His method will not work in Yemen.

He need the majority race card and "special previlage" under the constitution to make the system work.

Without that, how an Indian is able to protect the interest of the majority(race, religion, royal) and stay in power?

His system can not work in other country except Malaysia.

  12. Other than greed & power, Tun M is an egoistic & self-centred man. he will do and say just about anything to justify his misdeeds. He just loves to be exalted and bask in the delight of praises heaped upon him. He is authoritarian, make no mistake and he will not think twice to use that to achieve his own personal agenda at the expense of the population at large. He is like a malignant cancer, even 0.1% of this cell left behind will mean a recurrence of an illness that will lead to death. Rest assured, this is how History will remember him, thus the very thought of it is giving him a nightmare.

  13. Dato,

The Only reason that the Yemeni Government is inviting Mahathir is not only because NO ONE is willing to go there for fear of their life but also because Mahathir will do it for FREE.

Come On! Which Nutcase will ask a near 90 year senile old man to become his Adviser!! Only a desperately poor and unsafe nation which has been forsaken by the rest of the world will do such a thing.

  14. Dear Mr. Sakmongkol Ak47, you must send this letter to Yemeni government to make them aware about the disaster that was made by Mahathir in Malaysian economy.

I think, it is better to Yemeni to invite a economist representative from Egyptian Ikhwanul Muslimin who knows better about the economic, geographical, and social conditions in Yemen than Mahathir himself.

Last but not least, I hope that Mahathir will not be threatened by the tribesmen from fanatically norhtern Hashid and Bakil tribes. They are very strong tribes and thet cpntrol many agricultural land in Yemen.

I hope Mahathir do not privatize that land or, to put it under Bursa Saham (Share Bourses), or to extort it's revenues to bail out an incompetent cronies in Yemen. Otherwise, I afraid that the Hashid and Bakil will seek a revenge by finding his family until the end.

    Kahkahkahkah!!!! :p

  15. This article is quite a joke, actually. I wonder how much Mahathir PAID the Yemenis for the public invite. Perhaps Mahathir feels that if Lee Kuan Yew can be sought after by China in its early days, he should also be in the same league.

So there is more to this story than meets the eye. Please investigate deeper for the actual motive and truth to this story. It looks like its just another new and creative election propaganda to show rural Malaysians how great Mahathir is/was that even a despotic govt has invited him for help.

Do keep up with the comedic materials. They are quite entertaining to read and a good break from all the political ramblings....

  16. The question is whether Mahathir will be in Yemen at the behest of the Gulf Cooperation Council or on the invitation of Yemen's coalition government.

If the former, then they are probably testing to see how he can rejuvenate the GCC deal for that state. And if it's the latter, he has to be careful not to be made fall-guy for any advice undermined later.

North, south, east or west, Yemen's in some transitioning trouble at the moment.

Insurgents blew up a gas pipeline in the east two months ago, this while the military was trying to sort itself out in the north where ex-President Ali Abdallah still has his family links in the military that are now asked to realign their loyalty to Abd-al-Rab Mansour, the coalition leader who is supported by military chief Ali Mohsen who opposes Abdallah but is partial to GCC's Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile in the south, the pro-AlQaedah Ansar al-Sharia movement is barely held in check while in the west at least three hundred thousand children are facing end-life starvation.

The only thing Mahathir can do now is to recommend that gas mining be developed quickly for rehabilitation funds.

But that will require a stabilizing political accommodation between all parties concerned which hasn't been forthcoming which explains why the GCC deal has unraveled.

He may be walking into a political minefield in a no-man's land somewhere akin to and between Sudan and Mindanao while peddling a unilateral power approach that is the reason for the continuing political rupture. Therefore, caveat emptor, Petronas.

Which comes back to us. But for oil and gas, there hasn't been much going with positive accretion in real value for our economy.

The capital inflow in the 70s was due to irrational exuberance in the global stock market; there were few fundamentals in the valuations. Even today if you will care to delve deeper.

The resultant Asian crisis outflow took back everything and some, causing many players in the market to shrink or disappear.

Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector has remained low-value and you can guess that as much considering how fast even the post-Mahathir Umno cabinet has had to rescind such a fractional thing as the retrenchment insurance proposal owing to its cost factor on the SME base which remains underdeveloped although vaunted as our industrial backbone.

And after half a century of Umno administration, what can we say about our services running from public sector to education and infrastructure? We must be the only country that defines 'lean' to exclusively mean 'physically lean'.

As another small but expensive example, it's already 2012 but the rakyat are still wondering how come the radar system in Subang is now found to be faulty and yet supplied by closed tender by a company related to a minister of the present government which is helmed by a PM who seems to have suddenly lost his tongue on the matter although he can otherwise tweet-tweet and titter-twitter his way about other things only good for serving up an image representing an Umno that is fast becoming a political hologram because it is hollow within and rotten to the core.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 2/2

The same closed tender modus operandi must have been applied for the family members of people like Shahrizat, Nong Chik, Taib, Anipah and miscellaneous others. Maaf, we haven't got all day with the list.

The only thing 'tender' about such misdemeanors ostensibly swept under the carpet by an AG who has supremo power to decide which case to move or shelve must be the tingling pain all rakyat, taxpayers or otherwise, must have been feeling for the last tiga puluh hair-raising, bile-blowing tahun.

With all these issues still embedded in the bone marrow of Malaysia, the question then to ask is what value could possibly have been unlocked by Mahathirism all these years that cross-eyed Umno diehards can still defend as though they have just graduated from a course done by the local Goebbels Society for the preservation of the Umno species.

Note that the minimum entrance requirement to enter such a course is that all Almighty-given intelligence and virtue must be left outside the door before entering the classroom.

So that the collective answer by millions to the question on the value of Mahathirism will be: corruption, cronyism and the cave-in of the very federal institutions that are supposed to protect the interests of the rakyat who are supposed to be served by a supposedly contrite government who however has openly admitted it doesn't know best and yet can fire 967 tear gas canisters at the rakyat marching to plead for real and genuine reforms.

That this presumably penitent Umno government can even deny 250,000 had walked must incriminate all its propaganda organs. After all, if much less, why the need for so many canisters? (sucks tooth).

You reckon if the Yemeni's are to ask Mahathir to explain this paradox, he won't again plead 'i have little knowledge'?

But would he give the same answer if asked how he had managed to privatize national profits but socialize private risks and costs?

This same man is now saying he is fearful of an Opposition win of GE13 because of fear of fabricated charges after.

If asked why should he be worrying now if his administration had not tampered with the federal institutions in the first place, how is he going to answer?

Deflect by saying he has returned everything except the fruits and food which would have gone bad? In which case, why not return the treasury funds as well that were blown on saving MISC given to someone?

It must have been a freudian slip on his part that is revealing his fear of being exposed. That he thinks the Opposition can possibly put their people into what must be federal institutions of integrity must have been due to his own 'scant' knowledge of what he had done during his tenure - Lingam sauce, anyone?

Meanwhile, his admirer Don P.Domingo has bravely said that Barisan was not taken in by the Pakatan GE13 survey. Has Messr Domingo checked with Mahathir first why the latter has flip-flopped on Barisan's chances so many times in so many months past? Has he even checked with himself? After all, didn't he recently say it's "do or die"?

Back to oil and gas. Instead of wasting the rakyats' time spinning about ETPs and KPIs, Pemandu should do a simple extrapolation of our economy WITHOUT the oil and gas contribution.

Then we can see whether the dutch curse has already consumed what's left of our natural competitiveness already devastated to the bone by mahathirism.

  20. Dear Sakmongkol

There is one aspect of Mahathirism that you did not mention, that is, that the end justifies the means. He has used extreme and despicable means to destroy his enemies. Just consider what he did to Anwar to ensure he was politically finished off. Even a judge would look at Mahathir’s demeanor before giving judgment. Remember the infamous Justice Augustine Paul?

Then there was the big UMNO electoral battle with Tengku Razaleigh. TRH won on the first count. The lights mysteriously went out. When it came back on, the recount gave victory to Mahathir. It was also the start of money politics.

Mahathir sacked the Supreme Court judges, and that started the decline of the quality of justice. And it also signaled to one and all that one challenges Mahathir at one’s peril.

Come to think about it, Mahathir fits quite well in the Middle East where dictators flourish. But that was before the Arab Spring. Arab dictators are falling like 10-pins. Perhaps Mahathir is a bit late, out of time. Or is it Yemen that is living in the past?
